David Cronenberg’s explosive 1981 sci-fi horror film Scanners is set to be made into a television series...

The realm of peak television just got a bit of news that’s looking to literally blow minds: Scanners, the esteemed 1981 science fiction horror cult film from director David Cronenberg, is set to be adapted – à la HBO’s Westworld – as a television series.

A bidding war over the rights to the Scanners property saw Michael Ellenberg of Media Res and Bron Studios emerge victorious, reports Deadline. With prospective studio suitors consisting of Lionsgate, Paramount and Skydance losing out, Ellenberg will put a Scanners television series into development. Serving as executive producer, he's reportedly looking for a high-end filmmaker for the showrunner position.

Back in 2014 first-time director Joe Begos exploded on the horror scene with Almost Human, an alien abduction movie drenched in 80s flair. Now he’s back with his second feature, Supernatural Forces aka The Mind’s Eye, another film that’s not afraid to wear its love of 80s horror on its sleeve. In this case referencing the work of David Cronenberg and Brian De Palma, and films like the Scanners franchise, Carrie and the classic telekinetic fear flick The Fury.

Confession time: I’m not the biggest fan of David Cronenberg’s Scanners. If not for exploding head scene and the final battle between Revok and Vale, the film would be a very dull futuristic thriller.

Scream Factory has been exciting horror fans every Friday by announcing more cult horror titles that they will be releasing on DVD and (possibly) Blu-ray next year. Not a whole lot of excitement this week, though, with their announcement of a pair of early Nineties direct-to-video Scanners sequels.

I’m sure there are a few people out there thrilled to hear that Scanners II: The New Order and Scanners III: The Takeover will be coming to DVD (and possibly Blu-ray) for the first time next year, but the fact that even Scream Factory’s own Facebook announcement begins with an apology for not being able to get the rights to give David Cronenberg’s original 1980 Scanners a much overdue Blu-ray release speaks volumes as to how unlikely this news is to make any heads explode from excitement. This is probably the first time a Scream Factory announcement has been worded...

As creepy as it may sound, motion pictures about exploding heads always amuse me. Granted, there aren’t very many to choose from — “Scanners” and its obscure direct-to-video spin-off “Scanner Cop” are probably the cream of the crop — but I’m always in the mood to watch human cranium’s go kaboom in a cinematic setting. Perhaps that’s why I’m inexplicably drawn to Bryan Kramer’s post-apocalyptic horror outing “Presence”. Not only does it feature plenty of exploding heads, but it’s presented in a very strange and unusual fashion. If Gasper Noe and Shinya Tsukamoto joined forces, the end result might look something like this. A compliment, to be sure. As always, a handy plot synopsis: A man races through the city at night narrating his vision of the events that led to the present apocalypse and trying to escape from the disease he believes is the cause of it all.

Flying under all of our radars, production is expected to begin next week on a remake of The Land That Time Forgot, based on the classic book by Edgar Rice Burroughs, later remade into a 1975 film, reports Moviehole.net. Actor C.Thomas Howell will be behind the camera directing from a script by Darren Dalton (Scanner Cop). The site reports that the flick stars Howell (The Hitcher, Gettysburg, Christopher Showerman (George of the Jungle 2, Commander and Chief), and Timothy Bottoms, who coincidentally was a star of the recent Land of the Lost TV series which aired from 1991-1992. The original takes place during World War I, where a German U-boat sinks a British ship and takes the survivors on board. After it takes a wrong turn, the submarine takes them to the unknown land of Caprona, where they find dinosaurs and neanderthals. Awesome trailer beyond the break.

Now here's a DVD that's only about 9 years late, but when you're talking about a DVD release of Class of 1999 - hey, better late than never.

The 1990 sci-fi horror action flick from Mark L. Lester (Commando, Firestarter) is actually something of a remake/follow-up to his own Class of 1984 that dealt with teachers being forced to turn vigilante to deal with their school overrun by violent street gangs. In the nine year ago future of Class of 1999, the problem with violent juveniles in the classroom has reached such a critical point that the government decides to test out a program replacing human teachers with cyborg teachers unbeknownst to the student populace. Reprogramming battle droids for academics proves to be a bad idea when the robots go haywire and declare war on their pupils. Let's just say this movie could have just as easily been titled Terminator High.
