Premiering in 1998, Masami Tsuda’s Kare Kano (His And Her Circumstances) had all the elements of a successful adaptation. Gainax, fresh off the success of Neon Genesis Evangelion, took charge of the series, with Hideaki Anno directing the early episodes.
The anime captured the charm and emotional depth of Tsuda’s manga, offering a refreshingly honest look at teenage romance.
However, as the series progressed, cracks began to form.
The animation quality noticeably declined, episodes became more inconsistent, and by the final stretch, the show had lost much of its initial polish. Instead of a satisfying conclusion, Kare Kano ended in an unresolved state, frustrating viewers.
The reason? A behind-the-scenes struggle between Gainax and the manga’s creator.
The Rift Between Gainax and Masami Tsuda
One of the biggest issues that plagued Kare Kano’s production was a fundamental disagreement between Gainax and Masami Tsuda over the tone of the adaptation.

For more than two decades, fans of Spirited Away have speculated on the true nature of No Face, one of Studio Ghibli’s most mysterious and unsettling characters. However a recent confession reveals that No Face is neither a clear hero nor a villain, rather, it represents something deeper and something that represents society itself.

Hayao Miyazaki, the famed filmmaker of Studio Ghibli, recently expressed his thoughts on the character, providing fans with much-needed insight into its true nature. No Face stands apart from traditional villains in animated films. It is not inherently evil, rather, it is lost, lonely, and desperate for connection. This distinction makes No Face a uniquely tragic figure one that mirrors the way societal pressures can shape individuals.

Following the United States premiere of the new 2K restoration as part of New York City’s Japan Society over the weekend, Hideaki Anno’s first live-action feature-length film, “Love and Pop,” is headed to North American theaters for the first time via GKids.
The movie, based on the novel by Ryū Murakami, was originally released in 1998 but never had a North American release. The new 2K restoration will be “presented with technical adjustments made to its format,” since it was originally captured by consumer-grade handheld digital cameras. The film will be released at the IFC Center in New York City starting Feb. 21 and at the American Cinematheque’s Los Feliz 3 starting Feb. 23. Additional markets will follow.
“Love and Pop” is described, in the official release as “radical in its stylistic approach to teenage ennui, taking to the seedy streets of Shibuya with handheld digicams, distorted lenses and a barrage of unconventional camera angles.

Anime and manga have become extremely popular in recent times. The global barriers have been broken, and people from all across the world are eagerly waiting to watch and read these works from Japan.

Studio Ghibli’s co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, and Neon Genesis Evangelion’s creator Hideaki Anno are two of the biggest names in the world of anime. Regular Show has a lot of weird episodes, but the most bizarre and hilarious of them all arguably came from season 6. Although every Regular Show episode is built on nonsensical humor, the series never stopped being unpredictable. Things would escalate quickly in Regular Show, with most episodes going from Mordecai and Rigby doing their daily tasks to the park crew having to save the very fabric of reality.
Picking the weirdest Regular Show episodes is not easy, especially because, after a point, even the most nonsensical plotlines became business as usual for the Cartoon Network series. However, Regular Show season 6 managed to bend the rules of that universe even further with “Brilliant Century Duck Crisis Special,” a half-hour episode inspired by anime and Tokusatsu about giant robots made out of ducks and geese.

Modern advancements in writing and technology have greatly contributed to anime’s rise as a mainstream medium. While the current anime landscape has significantly boosted its popularity, older works still hold their unique charm.
Many iconic anime, including Code Geass, Ghost Stories, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Samurai Champloo, and many more, are timeless classics. While studios achieved remarkable success with original anime in the 2000s and 2010s, they seem to struggle to capture the same magic with today’s original releases.

If you happened to catch Misery Signals on their farewell tour, first of all I am extremely jealous. Not just because you got to see one of the most influential metalcore bands of all time, but you also got to see one of the best up and coming metalcore bands around, Trench. Trench brings the heavy and dark, and it may not be a surprise to learn how much of that is influenced, whether directly or indirectly, by the anime they watched growing up and still watch to this day. I chatted with vocalist Jay Breen about anime and how they were able to bring their influences to life in the video for “Divided Between New Skin.” Can you tell me a little about your anime journey? How it started and where you are now? Are there genres you gravitate toward? What is your favorite anime series or movie of all time?...

Kaiju No. 8 has become one of the greatest anime hits of recent years, reigniting the love among fans for these epic creatures. Kafka’s adventures while fighting massive monsters to save humanity have gained millions of fans all over the world in a surprisingly short amount of time. Nonetheless, this series is not the only beloved Kaiju-related franchise in existence, as Godzilla's iconic line of Kaiju redefined the monster genre.
As such, a collaboration between these two iconic series would not shock fans, and this is exactly what fans could expect in the future. In a now-deleted post from the official Godzilla X account, the main character from Kaiju No.8 can be seen, making fans believe that these two franchises could release a collaboration soon.

Netflix has become a power player in anime distribution; its streaming platform hosts classic series, simulcasts new ones, and it's even got a catalogue of anime produced in-house such as "Terminator Zero" (read our review), "Pluto" (we've also got a review for you), and many more.
Now, as of January 2025, a hole in the Netflix anime library has been refilled. "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood," which was taken off Netflix in North America back in January 2022, has returned to the platform.
"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" is based on the original shonen manga by author Hiromu Arakawa, adapted into 64 anime episodes by series director Yasuhiro Irie and writer Hiroshi Onogi. The anime is set in a fantasy world modeled on early industrial Europe, but where alchemy is also the scientific law of the land. Neon Genesis Evangelion's original TV run has one of the most divisive and interpretive endings in anime history. Mixed responses to the series' finale would be directly responsible for the following film, The End of Evangelion, a fundamental reimagining of the 25th and 26th episodes of the series that provided a second ending. Of course, the follow-up film by no means lacked any of Hideaki Anno's trademark artistic flair, and the debate over which ending reigns supreme and how to interpret both has surged on for decades now.
Nonetheless, Evangelion's controversial endings have nothing on another masterful production of Hideaki Anno: an adaptation of the manga Kare Kano, short for "Kareshi Kanoji no Jijou", also known by its literal English translation of His and Her Circumstances. On its own, the manga is a romantic comedy with intriguing twists and turns. Anno's approach to the manga is noteworthy on several fronts,...

Warning: Spoilers for One-Punch Man Chapter #211 (Jp release)
One-Punch Man's latest chapter follows up the exciting twists on the Ninja Arc’s redraws, proving how the story has evolved from One’s original webcomic to focus on the imminent threat from God. Empty Void revealed that he had regained himself after absorbing Garou’s powers and that Blast knew about his wife's true identity, but Opm’s chapter 211 also gave a shocking revelation that not only opened the door to expanding the series’ world-building and finally enlightens the mystery of God, but also made evident how One-Punch Man takes inspiration from other classic animes.
Even though God’s motivations were unknown, his underlings' appearances suggested he wanted to eliminate humanity. But the vision that Void saw in the cube before taking God’s power 15 years ago shed light on the ominous being and revealed a big reference that confirms...

Monster, by Naoki Urasawa, is certainly a landmark in the history of Seinen anime. One can argue there’s nothing else that has managed to surpass its intricate storytelling and psychological depth yet. And now on the rise of popularity in anime live-action adaptations, out of all the other anime, Monster seems to have everything that would fit into such a perfect adaptation.

In fact, one of the most well-known filmmakers, Guillermo del Toro showed interest in adapting Monster into a live-action show, as some might already know that he has an immense enthusiasm for the anime medium in general. However, things apparently don’t always go as planned. Although Toro’s idea was put to a hard stop for a certain reason, he is still in search of a way to make it a reality.
What exactly happened to Toro’s initial idea?...

From Bugs Bunny to Spider-Man, cartoon characters don't age. The Simpsons family will never grow old while Marvel and DC Comics' stables of superheroes/villains remain trapped in the illusion of change. People drawn with a pencil and paper are frozen in an instant of time, and even when those images are animated together the characters rarely age. Rarely. The acclaimed mecha anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion," however, is not just a coming-of-age story, but it also reckons with how cartoons (and their fans) prefer to stay children.

Naruto: Shippuden fans just received a big clue that its dub might be coming to streaming networks soon. For years, Naruto: Shippuden's dub has been exclusive to Adult Swim, which began airing the anime in 2014 following Naruto's stint on Toonami. A few months ago, in August 2024, Adult Swim finally aired the last episode of Shippuden's dub.
For over a decade, the latter half of Naruto's iconic journey has only been available at best via on-demand live TV services like Hulu's Live TV or Spectrum On Demand. Naruto lovers who subscribe to Crunchyroll, Netflix, or other networks would have been out of luck, and even on Hulu, the dub wouldn't be available on demand. The luck of those who love Naruto's English dub might be shifting, though, thanks to a tricky detail noticed by eagle-eyed observers.

In a year that saw two of the most popular manga series worldwide, Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia, to their conclusions, the most-read chapter of 2024 on Shueisha's Manga Plus service belongs to none other than Tatsuki Fujimoto's Chainsaw Man. That success looks to continue into the new year, with the upcoming Chainsaw Man: The Movie - Reze Arc sure to bring even more new fans to the story.

Anime fans might recognize legends like Junji Ito or Akira Toriyama as the pioneers in their genres but the mecha anime genre has Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the Mobile Suit Gundam series and Space Runaway Ideon. He’s a prominent rival of Hayao Miyazaki, often quite candid about his opinions on his works. However, what the anime community has noticed is Tomino tends to stick solely to the mecha genre, rarely steering away from it.

Hayao Miyazaki is a perfectionist through and through, and Studio Ghibli movies are proof of his undeniable nature. And when you are a perfectionist, it is hard to look past the smallest of mistakes. Miyazaki is the same, as he constantly finds things that he hates about his projects.

Much like live-action movies and TV, the question of the single best anime, or the single most popular anime, is a complicated one. For many people, the anime that made them fans of the medium will always have a special place in their heart. That goes double for shows with a high number of episodes, because that kind of commitment must mean the series is good, right? There's also the unfortunate fact that older titles aren't easily accessible and therefore not widely known unless you track down a very expensive physical copy or pirate it. For instance, "Neon Genesis Evangelion" is widely considered one of the best works of anime ever, but it was virtually unwatchable until a few years ago when Netflix licensed it, meaning you were unlikely to find it in many top anime lists.

Neon Genesis Evangelion's Rei Ayanami is an insanely popular character, enough so that she essentially created an entire archetype of anime characters in the form of the emotionless girl. However, series creator Hideaki Anno nearly forgot she existed while making the series, and didn't seem to consider her too highly at all.
Rei is introduced early in Evangelion, but in her first appearances, she's gravely injured and unable to really communicate. It takes quite a while for fans to get to know who Rei is as a character, and her complicated role within the story certainly didn't help matters. Despite this, many fans found themselves drawn towards Rei from the moment she appeared. There's just something about Rei's character that is instantly appealing, at least to a certain group of fans. The iconic series, Mobile Suit Gundam is often considered the foundation of the Mecha anime genre, and it has further expanded since then. However, despite its growing popularity, mecha anime is often perceived as formulaic, characterized by giant robots as tools of war and lengthy battles revolving around technological innovations.

Yet, Code Geass challenges this stereotype, presenting itself similar to a mecha anime but delivering a storyline that transcends the genre’s conventions.
Although the Knightmare Frames play a crucial role in Code Geass, they are far from the centerpiece of the story. In fact, since the beginning of its creative process, Code Geass deliberately distances itself from the label of a traditional robot anime, reframing the role of the machines entirely.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most widely acclaimed and influential anime series ever. Brainchild of the legendary Hideaki Anno, the series has spawned several films following the controversial ending of the TV anime, made unfathomable amounts of profit, and changed the mecha genre forever. The only element of the show more iconic than the towering and stylish Evangelion Units are the children that piloted them.
Shinji, Asuka, and Rei are characters as instantly recognizable as they come, and Neon Genesis Evangelion drags them through both triumphant mecha warfare and psychological torture. The series, which advertises itself as a run-of-the-mill action anime before evolving into something entirely different by its end, has been critiqued, discussed, dissected, and enjoyed for nearly 30 years. Of Evangelion's original 26 episodes, nearly all feature moments which have become permanently ingrained in the minds of fans. Some, however, stand out among the rest.
