Chill Out Haters, It's A 90s Movie
I watched this today for the first time in years. As a kid during the 90s, I loved this flick. My best friend and I had a HUGE crush on JTT. As an adult, I think the movie is pretty cute but it brings back memories of being a nine year old laughing my butt off and going home looking through my Teen Beat magazine. This movie needs to be appreciated for the 90s movie it was. It's unfortunate people who cry about cultural appropriation try to ruin it for those of us who loved it as kids.
Nostalgia '90s Overload
I can remember loving this movie back in the '90s. I recently rewatched it and still thought it was a pretty good movie. The cast had some really big names (for the time), a number of jokes seemed like it pushed the "Disney limits", and well....Chevy Chase. Going back after all these years to watch Man of the House, you notice how '90s the film really is. From video games, to clothing, and hairstyles, it's full of nostalgia. Man of the House is right in the mix of Disney's mid-90s push for live action movies like Heavyweights, Mighty Ducks, and The Santa Clause.

Very sweet
I think it's a very sweet film.
Another Disney film from the 1990s that I and other reviewers evidently disagree on; an average rating of 2.2 on Letterboxd is very harsh, in my opinion. I found it charming and suitably acted.
I assume the major dislike of this film is the secondary plot featuring Joey (Richard Portnow) & Co., which I would agree is unimaginative and ill-fitting. However, that doesn't affect my overall feelings. Potentially - if anything, it mentions a few times the negative depictions; somewhat surprisingly, for a 1995 release anyway.
The story between Ben (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), Jack (Chevy Chase) and Sandy (Farrah Fawcett) is nice. It's simple, but it's one that works extremely well - I felt attached to them, they have good chemistry with each other.
There's not much more to be said. I truly did enjoy 'Man of the House'.

Comedies From the 1980's to The Aughts. Have You Seen It? I Have Not! Comedies Released Into Theaters From 1980 to 2004 That I Have Never Seen Before.
No way Disney would make this today.
No way.
Heck, I'm honestly surprised it's even being offered up on their streaming service for viewing.
And then, while I'm at it, I'm even more surprised that since it's available for all of us to see with our very own eyeballs (of which I am grateful) that it isn't being shown with some sort of sensitivity warning (of which I am most grateful of all).
Let us see it, and let us make up our own minds about its content Yes, this is 1995 (Although, I think this wrapped in 1994, but still a glorious year for living) and I'm surprised even a mid-90's Disney greenlit this thing.
Is it funny?
No.
But not because it's not p.c.. it's just not funny.
Chevy Chase isn't funny.
The kid isn't funny.
The script isn't funny.
And poor Farrah.
I just feel so bad for her here.
She's forever a 1970's icon, and this is a mere twenty years later but it feels so much longer.
But I'll always love her.
This movie is just sad to me. The way the father leaves and it's just like, Ta-Ta with a flick of a backwards hand wave out the BMW's driver's side, and that's it?
It's so dismissive.
And who would leave that gorgeous home for an apartment (though the apartment looks pretty great)?
And what's his name, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, spouting off script lines that obviously some thirty year old neurotic wrote?
Typical 90's kid movie stuff.
So wise beyond their years.
But the movie still isn't funny.
But it is great to see mid-90's Vancouver, and great actors not too far from their prime.
It still makes for a decent enough hour and a half for these eyeballs.
Especially Farrah.

Goey Rating: GFF (Great Family Film)
This is a great movie for families to watch together. This is a story about a boy who is trying to stop h is mom form being with her new boyfriend. Of course nothing is ever easy and things never go as planned. To add to everything the new boyfriend has a dark secret. One that he doesn't want the boy or his mother to know. When the secret does get out everything blows up and the story gets very interesting. Jonathan Taylor Thomas does a great job playing a kid who whats to keep things with just himself and his mother. I was really impressed with this movie and was really entertained by it. It is definitely worth watching.

- TriviaThe only Chevy Chase movie of the Nineties to open at number one, and the last of his career to do so.
- GoofsWhen Jack supposedly trips on the skateboard, you can see that Chevy puts his leg out much further than usual. Clearly the incident was staged.
- Quotes
Chet Bronski: Well, we're all part of the same tribe.
Jack Sturgess: Right, the Minotauk.
Chet Bronski: No, I'm referring to the emotionally-constipated American male over 40.
- Crazy creditsNo bees were harmed during the making of this film. All bee action was supervised by Dr. Norman E. Gary, entomologist.
- Alternate versionsDuring the first Indian guide meeting, Ben nicknames Jack after his pet. In initial releases he gave the name Numb Nuts for his pet squirrel. Alternately (for television) Ben gives the name Butt Head after a goat.
