Celebrated Malian director Souleymane Cissé, who was the first sub-Saharan African director to win a major award at Cannes with 1987 Jury Prize winner Yeelen (Brightness), died Wednesday at the age of 84.
Active right up until his death, Cissé had recently attended a press conference to present two trophies at a pre-event for the 29th edition of Fespaco, the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou.
“Papa died today in Bamako. We are all in shock. He dedicated all his life to his country, to cinema and to art,” his daughter Mariam Cissé said in a statement.
Cissé was due to preside over the jury of the biannual Fespaco festival, which opens in the capital of Burkina Faso from this Saturday.
Born in Malian capital of Bamako in 1940, Cissé was passionate about cinema from a young age.

While I appreciate all kinds of horror, I do have a special fondness for movies about telephones. Particularly from a pre-cellphone era. That sense of aural menace is more tangible with a landline connection. However, my expectation for 1987’s The Caller, one solely based on the title alone, was not met upon first viewing; there are no menacing phone calls here. In fact, the titular use of “caller” in director Arthur Allan Seidelman and writer Michael Sloan’s movie is referring to a visitor. My disappointment was fleeting, though, because this story still offers plenty of mind games. The psychological terror is now done at an arm’s length, and with it comes a bizarre ending that seals this movie’s status as a hidden gem.
What stands out about The Caller is its small cast. The dialogue and scenery would suggest a larger group of characters is in store,...

Love is beautiful in many ways but it doesn’t take long for things to turn ugly. Something similar happened with The Girl (2012) actress, Sienna Miller. Things were going great for her when her status in the film industry began growing thanks to both her work and romantic relationship with actor Jude Law. The two met on the set of their film Alfie in 2003 and got engaged the next year.

But alas, their love story came to an unexpected and unfortunate end when the Sherlock Holmes (2009) actor admitted to cheating on Sienna Miller with the nanny of his kids. Sienna Miller has previously opened up about what it was like dating Jude Law thanks to the interference of the media.

Haunt Season is the latest in a long line of scary attractions turned into real houses of horror, films like Haunt and Teddy Told Me To. Of course, you can go even further back, before haunted houses were popular, to films like Tourist Trap, the original House of Wax, all the way back to Mystery in the Wax Museum from 1933. It offers a great setting for films, with plenty of opportunity for jump scares and misdirecting the viewer, which keeps attracting filmmakers. It also means that it gets harder and harder to stand out from all the other similar films.
When Taylor doesn’t show up for her shift at the local haunted house, everyone simply assumes she flaked out and ghosted them. Having seen the prologue,...

Kim Kahana, the stunt performer, teacher, coordinator and war hero who played Chongo on the kids show Danger Island and doubled for Charles Bronson in several action films, has died. He was 94.
Kahana died Monday of natural causes at his home in Groveland, Florida, his wife, Sandy Kahana, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Kahana, 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, taught stunts to many thousands of students since the mid-1970s in six-week courses that took place in Chatsworth, California, and Central Florida. Many went on to have thriving careers in show business.
He also had six different black belt degrees — he taught martial arts, too — and worked as a professional bodyguard protecting Hollywood types.
A native of Hawaii, Kahana appeared in his first film as a biker in the Marlon Brando-starring The Wild One (1953) and was an extra in other movies before he realized that stunt performers got paid more than he did.

Horror fans have had a whole lot of zombie entertainment sent our way in the last couple decades, much of it broadcast on television by AMC. There have been so many flesh-eaters and brain-munchers on our screens, some of us are feeling zombie overload. But if you’re still looking for zombie stories that do things a little differently from the others, we have a recommendation for you: a Japanese film that mixes the walking dead with shootouts, swordfights, and lengthy martial arts fights. It’s called Versus – and if you haven’t seen this one yet, it’s the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Versus (watch it Here) was an independent production made by a bunch of unknowns, and many of the people involved with the movie remain unknowns to this day. It marked the feature directorial debut of Ryuhei Kitamura, who has gone on to have a solid career,...

Assassin Club is an action movie involving a group of elite killers, and its actors and the cast of characters they play reflect the call for the best of the best. In the spirit of The Bourne Identity, Bullet Train, and John Wick but with a little Hunger Games thrown into the mix, Assassin Club follows a hitman who reluctantly has to defend himself against other contract killers sent to take him — and each other — out. It's a professional contest where one winner collects millions and keeps their life while the other six lose the game and their lives.
The movie is directed by Camille Delamarre, helmer of Brick Mansions and The Transporter Refueled, and stars a handful of familiar figures in the action genre. As with any ensemble compiled for a story of first-rate mercenaries, the actors cast in Assassin Club are varied in their appearance and talent. It's...

It's time for apparel in the U.S.A. as Sophie Turner shows off her early Christmas gift. The star posted an image to her Instagram Story on Tuesday, Dec. 15 of herself wearing a T-shirt with the words "Hannah Montana" emblazoned on it. The shirt was a gift from husband Joe Jonas and actually includes a variety of Miley Cyrus pics, not all of which are from the enduring Disney Channel series that signed off in January 2011 after four seasons. "Thanks to the hubbs of the year for my early Christmas gift," Sophie wrote in all capital letters. The 24-year-old Game of Thrones alum tagged both Joe and Miley in the post, which is below, and the "Party in the U.S.A."...
