Alan Scarfe, ‘Double Impact’ and ‘Seven Days’ Actor, Dies at 77
Image
Alan Scarfe, the classically trained British Canadian actor known for his turns as bad guys in Double Impact and Lethal Weapon III and as Dr. Bradley Talmadge on the Upn sci-fi series Seven Days, has died. He was 77.

Scarfe died April 28 of colon cancer at his home in Longueuil, Quebec, his family announced.

Survivors include his son, actor Jonathan Scarfe (ER, Raising the Bar, Hell on Wheels, Van Helsing).

Born in England and raised in Vancouver, Scarfe portrayed the Romulans Tokath and Admiral Mendak on episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1991 and 1993 and was another alien, the powerful Magistrate Augris, on a 1995 installment of Star Trek: Voyager.

“Science fiction on film and television, especially if you are playing some kind of alien character with fantastic make-up, is great for actors with a strong stage background,” he said in a 2007 interview. “The productions need that kind of size and intensity of performance.

Chicago Fire Season 12 Report Card: Best Episode, Most Shocking Storyline, and More!
Sylvie
It has been nearly 14 years since Chicago Fire first graced our screens.

As the original series that spawned an entire TV universe, the firefighter-focused arm of One Chicago has remained widely popular.

Throughout Season 12, Chicago Fire brought in between five and seven million viewers each week.

This season was full of ups and downs, and we're finally ready to talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly.

From Severide's return to Sylvie's exit, many characters were in and out this season.

Jack Damon and Lizzie Novak (if that is even her name) joined the crew, while Boden's big promotion took him off the roster.

Editors' Conversation: In a Nation Divided, Is Water Cooler TV a Thing of the Past?

The team responded to dozens of intense calls, dealt with personal issues, and tried their best to stay together at work.

Chicago Fire Season 12, Episode 12 Review: Severide Makes a Frenemy
Image
The following contains major spoilers from Chicago Fire Season 12, Episode 12, "Under Pressure," which debuted Wednesday, May 15 on NBC.

With the strike-shortened season of Chicago Fire almost at an end, it's time for the show to start wrapping up its plotlines. Season 12, Episode 12, "Under Pressure" is a strong episode for Joe Cruz, as the character's sudden marital problems are just as quickly dealt with. And it lets the audience in a little more to the world of new addition Novak, presuming that Jocelyn Hudon's paramedic will become a series regular in Season 13.

But most importantly, "Under Pressure" sets the table to conclude the Firehouse 51 vs. Paramedic Chief Robinson storyline, and to give Eamonn Walker's departing Chief Wallace Boden a sendoff. The way that it does so is honestly surprising and adds back in a character whom some fans were probably happy never seeing again. But all of that slots...

Chicago Fire's Andrea Newman on Season 12's 'Constant Challenge'
Image
As Chicago Fire Season 12 hurtles toward its conclusion, Andrea Newman is responsible for keeping the dramatic fire burning. Newman, who has been with the NBC series since its beginning, took over as sole showrunner following Derek Haas' departure from One Chicago. And so far, she's served up a season with plenty of romance, fire department power plays and even the theft of a fire truck.

Newman spoke to Cbr about celebrating the show's 250th episode with Chicago Fire Season 12, Episode 11, "Inside Man," which also served as a showcase for original cast member Taylor Kinney. She discussed the truth behind that wild story -- as well as what's to come in the rest of Season 12, including the return of Paramedic Chief Robinson. And what goes into the jaw-dropping ends of every Chicago Fire season?

Cbr: "Inside Man" was one of the more action-packed episodes in Chicago Fire Season 12, as criminals stole...

Chicago Fire Season 12, Episode 11 Review: Why Taylor Kinney Can't Leave Again
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Chicago Fire Season 12, Episode 11, "Inside Man," which debuted Wednesday, May 8 on NBC.

When Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney took a leave of absence, fans panicked because Kinney was clearly the star of the NBC show. Season 12, Episode 11, "Inside Man" reaffirms just how critical both Kinney and his character Kelly Severide are to the long-running firefighter drama. The story revolves around Severide in every way possible, and by putting him in peril for the umpteenth time, reiterates his importance to Firehouse 51.

The premise of a fire truck being stolen directly out of a firehouse might sound farfetched, but it's something that has happened in real life, and it puts Kinney in his element. With the numerous action scenes that Chicago Fire has handed him over the years, he wrangles the physical part of the episode easily, while the Stellaride relationship provides emotional depth. "Inside Man...

Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 11 Review: Inside Man
David Eigenberg, Hanako Greensmith, Taylor Kinney, Joe Minoso, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Jocelyn Hudon in Chicago Fire (2012)
After a handful of lukewarm episodes so far this season, Chicago Fire has finally delivered the heat we've been missing.

It's been a while since we've been this invested in an hour of TV, but Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 11 was intense and kept us on the edge of our seats.

We also finally got a taste of the Stellaride vibes we've been missing for so long!

We got a much-needed look into our favorite characters who haven't been given much emotional content to work with this season.

Stella's reaction to Severide's situation reminded us that these two actually do share more than a locker room. The rest of the crew showed how much they cared about Kelly, too.

One of the resounding themes from "The Wrong Guy" was the mystery surrounding two of Chicago Fire's newest characters: Jack Damon and Lyla Novak.

Yes, we've confirmed that her name is Lyla,...

I hope you're wearing your seatbelts because this ride is about to get bumpy.

Coming around the corner on next week's Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 11 is a joy ride courtesy of someone with a whole lot of nerve.

The promo promises an action-packed episode. Truck 81 is stolen, but the thieves don't seem to know they've got a passenger.

That's right — Severide is along for what may just be his most exciting day on that truck yet.

In the last episode, the writers teased some mysteries surrounding a couple of new characters, so we'll be holding our breath to see if anything new is revealed there.

The quick 30-second promo that aired after Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 10 ended revealed that Truck 81 was stolen. We don't know who took it, but we do know that Severide was on the truck when it took off.

Because, of course, he was.

Review: Chicago Fire Season 12, Episode 10 Is Visibly Disjointed
Image
The following contains major spoilers from Chicago Fire Season 12, Episode 10, "The Wrong Guy," which debuted Wednesday, May 1 on NBC.

"The Wrong Guy" is a Chicago Fire episode in which several characters are out of place -- which seems fitting, since the entire episode comes across as disjointed and disappointing. It isn't a terrible episode, but it simply exists, with no clear purpose and no contribution to Season 12 as a whole. Calling it a filler episode is even a bit of a reach, because there's only a few bits in the hour that will stick beyond the closing credits.

There are five different plots in "The Wrong Guy," making it a busy episode despite the lack of actual momentum. Kelly Severide is filling in as acting supervisor, his wife Stella Kidd is worried about her Girls on Fire training program, Joe Cruz is startled by the return of someone from his adopted son Javi's past,...

Chicago Fire returned with a new firefighter, an intense rescue, and a new boss at Firehouse 51
Image
The Chicago Fire hiatus ended Wednesday night with a new episode called The Wrong Guy.

Paramedic Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) was introduced in the previous episode as the new partner for Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith).

Novak stepped in after Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) sent Jared Lennox (Wesam Keesh) packing. Lennox didn’t fit at Firehouse 51, as the team sought a replacement for Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer).

Violet wasn’t sure about Novak at first, but she was won over by Novak’s skills in the field and outgoing personality.

Rome Flynn has also departed from the Chicago Fire cast. He played firefighter Jake Gibson, the character replacing Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende).

More casting changes are in store this season, so be ready One Chicago fans.

Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 10 Review: The Wrong Guy
David Eigenberg, Hanako Greensmith, Taylor Kinney, Joe Minoso, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Jocelyn Hudon in Chicago Fire (2012)
Chicago Fire is back from another hiatus, but maybe the writers needed a longer break.

I'm not trying to shade anyone, but let's face it — like many others this season, this episode lacked a certain something. Substance? Interest? Whatever it was, it was missing.

When you have a show with this many characters, and you're constantly introducing new ones, it has to be hard to keep track of the storylines you're putting together. That's no reason to jump the shark, though, and it's starting to feel like that's what's happening.

On Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 10, we at least had a bit of a theme going on. Most of the stories focused on family.

Hermann learned how to track his kids' locations on their phones, Cruz dealt with a potential threat regarding Javi's adoption, and Severide came close to having to watch Stella fall to her death.

Just another day in Chicagoland,...

Chicago Fire spoilers: Specific details for upcoming episodes revealed
David Eigenberg, Hanako Greensmith, Taylor Kinney, Joe Minoso, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Jocelyn Hudon in Chicago Fire (2012)
Chicago Fire fans have been patiently waiting almost a month for new episodes.

That wait could pay off in a big way with some dramatic storylines over the next few weeks.

As a reminder, Chicago Fire Season 12 was shortened due to the Hollywood strikes. This means we only get 13 new episodes this time, as opposed to 22+ in a regular season.

NBC has four more new episodes of Chicago Fire that debut in May, including a season finale that will likely include another cliffhanger.

The good news is that there are four consecutive weeks of new content, meaning One Chicago fans won’t have to worry about repeat episodes for a while.

Chicago Fire Season 13 has also been ordered. So, new episodes for that season will air in the fall of 2024.

On May 1, a new episode called The Wrong Guy debuts on NBC at 9/8c.

Chicago Fire Season 12 is quickly approaching its end. Only a few episodes remain before the long summer hiatus.

This is a shorter season of the hit firefighter drama – mostly because of the two Hollywood strikes that delayed production.

Even though most fans feel like the show just returned, it has been on a long spring break before the final episodes from the current season.

The summer hiatus will feel even longer due to the delays in the past season, but at least NBC already ordered Chicago Fire Season 13.

Many dramas around the television landscape have been canceled, so at least Chicago Fire fans can rest easy knowing the show is returning in the fall of 2024.

But before that new season begins, we have some important upcoming episodes to close out Chicago Fire Season 12.

Here's When Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 10 Will Release (& Why The Break Is So Long)
Image
Chicago Fire season 12, episode 10 premieres in May 2024. The shortened season returns after a nearly monthlong hiatus. Multiple factors likely contribute to this extended break in episodes of the show.

Chicago Fire season 12 will return with the impending episode 10 despite an uncommonly long break between episodes. The show is the flagship program of NBC and Dick Wolf's One Chicago franchise, which includes three spinoffs, two of which are still on the air, and all of which follow various public services in the Windy City. Co-created by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, the original show has been on the air since 2012, continuing Wolf's habit of creating successful long-running interconnected television franchises, a roster which also includes NBC's Law & Order and CBS' FBI.

While Chicago Fire season 13 has already been renewed, the show has not yet officially ended season 12. Nevertheless, the ongoing season is in the middle of an unusually long hiatus,...

Here's Why 'Chicago Fire' Won't Return with New Episodes Until May 1
Image
Chicago Fire is one of the biggest NBC TV shows on the air today, but fans might be wondering why there’s no new episode tonight.

Unfortunately for One Chicago fans – which includes Chicago Med and Chicago Pd – the show has been on hiatus since April 3!

The new season began with four weeks of new episodes after it premiered on January 17, 2024. Since then, there’s been a very inconsistent schedule of reruns vs. new episodes.

Unfortunately, there won’t be another new episode until May 1, 2024. The reason why the schedule is so on-and-off is because of the strikes that happened last year. Both the writers’ and actors’ guilds went on strikes, and filming for season 12 could not even take place until November 2023. As a result, Chicago Fire had to have a shortened season and the need for larger gaps between some episodes.

Joe Flaherty, ‘Sctv’ and ‘Freaks and Geeks’ star, is dead at 82
Image
Joe Flaherty, founding member of “Sctv” and ubiquitous comic actor for decades including a stint as the Dad on “Freaks and Geeks,” has died at the age of 82, according to multiple reports.

The Pittsburgh-born performer (a rare American in the Canadian comedy sphere) got his start with the Chicago-based Second City Theater, first appearing on the “National Lampoon Radio Hour” before resettling in Toronto to become part of Second City’s core in the Great White North. He was one of the initial writer/performers on “Sctv,” a vanguard sketch comedy series co-starring John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara, Harold Ramis (for a little while), Dave Thomas, and, later, Martin Short, that mixed parody programming with behind-the-scenes shenanigans at a low rent television station in “Mellonville.” Indeed, if “Sctv” could be said to have a main character, it would be Flaherty’s Guy Caballero, the corrupt,...

According to Exclaim, the Sctv legend had been dealing with a sickness and was said to be “very ill.” In late February, Flaherty’s Second City brother, Martin Short, sent a message to their Sctv peers to fundraise for his home care in his last days, which amounted to $20K a month. Short had said that they had been made aware of the gravity of his condition and Flaherty chose to spend the rest of his life at home with his daughter rather than at a facility. The message would hit social media.

In Short’s fundraising message, he says, “We are writing to our friends because we believe Sctv meant something to you, and that would not be the case if it were not for Joe Flaherty. He was a mentor, a director,...

Face Off showcase participants lauded for their courage
(L-r) Susan Prior, Enzo Tedeschi and Stephanie Pringle (Photo: Sie Kitts)

As Susan Prior watched works from 15 actors and filmmakers that were screened at the third Face Off screen actors’ showcase at the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington last Thursday, she was constantly impressed by their bravery.

The actor along with filmmaker Enzo Tedeschi and Stephanie Pringle, co-founder of Chicken and Chips Casting, viewed the self-tests, teaser trailers and short films and gave the creators their expert advice and guidance.

“There were some beauties, a lot of thought and sweat. The word bravery kept popping into my head – the bravery to take the first step, to create your own work, and to put it out there,” says Susan, whose recent credits include Frayed and the upcoming The Gloaming and The Wrong Guy.

“Face Off and any other initiatives out there such as Mark Forytarz’s Melbourne Film Factory and Ron Brown...

10 Times Vince McMahon Backed The Wrong Guy
WWE.com

Vince McMahon has been the driving creative force for WWE programming for over 30 years. In addition to being the Chairman of the company, he’s also the head booker. He has always been the man in charge and even though he’s 69 years old, he’s still in that spot. Others like Triple H or his daughter Stephanie McMahon may have a lot of power too, but everything that happens on WWE TV is based on what Vince wants.

There have been a number of guys that Vince has pushed hard on television with the idea that they would become the biggest stars in the business. Some are heels while others are faces. Some are American babyfaces while others might be foreign heels because that’s an easy angle to do. They come in all shapes and sizes too, but as we know from watching WWE over the years,...

Charisma Carpenter Interview: Passion for The Lying Game Finale, Bands for Beds
During a recent telephone conversation, it was easy to understand how Charisma Carpenter makes the character of Rebecca Sewell so easy to hate on The Lying Game.

She's extremely passionate about the show, the stories, her fellow actors and her role on it. Yes, the actress adors The Lying Game as much as you do - and she loves to talk about it, as evidenced in the following Q&A...

----------------------------------------

TV Fanatic: When you started on The Lying Game, did you have any idea how crucial your role would be?

Charisma Carpenter: I had a sneaking suspicion when they told me I was going to be their mom. I was supposed to do six episodes, and I ended up shooting all 10 episodes of season 1B. So, when that happened, I felt like...the last four I found out I was going to be the mom. I thought, well,...

Shut Up And Write: Genre Is A Moving Target by Chuck Wendig
If laughter is the best medicine, we’d all grow sick and die before we reached our mid-twenties. But before then, we’d have guys like Chuck Wendig to help ease the pain. Chuck is likely the funniest guy working the crime-fiction scene today, but as we’ll soon learn below, Wendig has no trouble transcending genre and making it, to put it politely, sorry it got all uppity with him. Chuck released last year the short-story e-collection Irregular Creatures, which was easily my favorite short-story collection since Pinckney Benedict’s Miracle Boy the year previous, and I cannot now think of a better collection I’ve read since (and I’ve read a few). Chuck’s latest is the novel Blackbirds, which sees its official release today, and if you are reading this in the Los Angeles area, Chuck will be appearing tonight at the Mysterious Galaxy bookstore in Redondo Beach,...

André Sauvé Will Turn a Sketch of His Into a Film
Canadian comedian André Sauvé will adapt into a film a famous monologue he did in a sketch: the grocery store (l'épicerie). The film will fittingly be called L'épicerie.

This will be the second film in which André Sauvé plays after Filière 13. Instead of being in a supporting role like in Filière 13, Sauvé will be the lead actor.

Christal Film Productions, a production company, announced yesterday that André Sauvé will write the film's script along with Claude Lalonde (Filière 13). For the moment, no director is attached to the film.

The film is about a man who goes to the grocery store. Once there, he starts to panick because of what's offered to him on the shelves.

In the next months, the producers of the film will seek subsidies from Telefilm Canada and the Sodec, respectively a federal and a Quebecker cinematographic funding agency. The producers expect L'épicerie's budget to be at $6 M.

Martin Short, Not Dave Foley, Will Be Marshall's New Boss in Season 7 of "How I Met Your Mother"
Like all good fans of the Kids in the Hall, I've been rooting for every member of the troupe to find success since they mostly dissolved their partnership in the mid-1990s. The fan culture surrounding KitH really is not far removed from those who love(d) Monty Python before them - we love seeing the various members pop up in anything and everything, but we really love it when they show up together (this is usually in pairs, Dave Foley & Kevin MacDonald, Mark McKinney & Bruce McCullogh, and Scott Thompson & his lisp). The same can't really be said for SNL or "MadTV" alumnae, Bill Murray being the exception to every rule man has ever concocted to make sense of the world.

Dave Foley was the easiest to root for at first, and not just because he has always been my personal favorite. Yes, it was a drag that his role...

Movies That Deserve a Second Life: Comedy Edition
Welcome to another edition of Movies That Deserve a Second Life. If you need a refresher on what I’m referring to by “second life,” check out the Action/Adventure Edition. If you’re caught up, read on to see what funny flics I felt were unfairly ignored/disliked upon its release or have been forgotten in the years since its release.

Comedy is almost certainly the most subjective of all genres. What makes one person laugh is guaranteed to make another yawn or wrinkle his/her brow. Some find juvenilia in poor taste while others bust a gut. Everyone claims to have a sense of humor, but almost no one enjoys every type of humor there is, from dry wit and pungent satire to bodily fluid gags and intentionally groan-worthy puns. Therefore, I think it’s safe to say that no one (besides myself) will be satisfied with every choice.

Dave Foley Guests On Stargate Atlantis
Dave Foley guest starring on Stargate Atlantis isn’t exactly the weirdest thing in the universe, but it’s still pretty quirky casting. Foley – a stand-up comic, member of the beloved comedy troupe Kids in the Hall, a judge on Thank God You’re Here and an actor whose credits include The Wrong Guy, A Bug’s Life and Sky High – is the main guest in the Atlantis episode “Brain Storm,” airing tonight on the Sci Fi Channel. Foley plays Malcolm Tunney, a businessman/scientist and one-time rival of Dr. McKay (David Hewlett) who’s apparently invented a device that can help get global warming under control. Of course, “apparently” is the key word here, as Tunney’s top-secret demonstration doesn’t go quite according to plan, forcing McKay and Dr. Keller (Jewel Staite) to save the day.
