While Disney has had no problem going back to some of their biggest animated hits to transform them into live-action movies, that only forces the hand of other studios to do the same. And while Disney has a bigger pool than DreamWorks, the latter has one of the most beloved animated franchises of the century to play with. With that comes the trailer for their remake of How to Train Your Dragon, with DreamWorks looking to ride this one to box office glory. We’ve seen a bit of footage throughout the months, but this teaser (which aired during Super Bowl Lix) is a full pitch on selling skeptical viewers to the idea. The full trailer drops Wednesday, but I gotta say, this looks pretty great, right?

A year after DreamWorks released Madagascar, Disney released its own animated movie with a near-identical plot, The Wild. Released in 2005, Madagascar stars Chris Rock as Marty, an ambitious zebra at the Central Park Zoo who dreams of leaving behind his enclosure and exploring the outside world. The cast is rounded out by Ben Stiller as Alex the egocentric lion, Jada Pinkett Smith as Gloria the confident hippo, and David Schwimmer as Melman the hypochondriac giraffe, who all escape with Marty and end up stranded on the titular island.
Madagascar was a big hit with audiences and ended up launching a blockbuster franchise. Madagascar was followed by two sequels and a spinoff, and ended up becoming a lucrative property for DreamWorks. Just one year later, Disney tried to replicate that success by releasing a movie so similar that it could’ve been a remake. Unfortunately for the Mouse House, their version...

In 1994, David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Steven Spielberg -- three of Hollywood's biggest power players -- united to form a brand-new major motion picture studio called DreamWorks, something that hadn't been attempted in decades. The trio of execs had three stipulations: they wouldn't make any more than nine films a year, they would be allowed to make movies for other studios, and they would be able to go home in time for dinner.
For three years, the trio would wrangle contracts and make deals with various music, film, and television entities to make sure it was standing on solid ground and could handle being the outsize business entity they wanted it to be. In 1997, DreamWorks finally released its first three movies: "The Peacemaker," "Amistad," and "Mouse Hunt." The year after, the studio broke into feature animation with the bad-but-popular CGI insect film "Antz" and the highly acclaimed and very good "The Prince of Egypt,...

Put the town on alert! The 1997 volcano film Dante’s Peak will be erupting into a new 4K Ultra-High Definition Blu-ray on February 11th. According to Blu-ray.com, the Universal Pictures film will be getting a new physical media release courtesy of Kino Lorber. The film comes from director Roger Donaldson, who is known for movies like the Kevin Costner suspense thriller No Way Out, the Tom Cruise bartender drama Cocktail, and the sci-fi horror Species. Dante’s Peak stars Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton, Jamie Renée Smith, Jeremy Foley, and Elizabeth Hoffman.
The movie is a part of the often-occurring dual release of movies with similar plots, with examples that include Armageddon and Deep Impact, Antz and A Bug’s Life and White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen. Dante’s Peak would be released the same year as the other notable volcano film Volcano. Volcano would star Tommy Lee Jones and sport a...

For the past three decades, DreamWorks has been seen as the studio that challenged Disney and, in some cases, won. If you are still in business after so many years and are still making movies, then you are clearly doing something right. Originally founded on October 12th, 1994, by three innovators with different motivations, the studio has gone on to make some of the biggest franchises in film history.
Who founded Dreamworks?
Originally conceived by former Disney executive Jeffery Katzenberg, he sought the aid of fellow entertainment executives Steven Spielberg and David Geffen. The three would found DreamWorks Skg with the purpose of becoming a major force in the entertainment industry. The studio’s first release was The Peacemaker in 1997 with other films like Amistad and Mouse Trap releasing that same year.

In its nearly 30 years of existence, DreamWorks Animation has had a remarkable trajectory marked primarily by the bulk of franchises it created, as much as through the quality of the films themselves. Consider that one of its chief competitors, Pixar Animation Studios, started making feature-length computer-animated films in 1995 and has made just 28 features in the intervening 30 years. DreamWorks? Well, it's made 49 features in just over 25 years. Some of these films are best left forgotten or have only been rediscovered over time courtesy of oddball memes (see: "Bee Movie"). But DreamWorks Animation, amidst the Trolls and boss babies, the chatty penguins of Madagascar, and silent horses who embody the spirit of the Cimarron, has made 10 genuinely solid movies. And with the arrival in late September of DreamWorks' "The Wild Robot," there's no better time than right now to rank those 10 films and see if the studio's latest title makes the grade.

In 1994, Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg resigned from the company and teamed up with Steven Spielberg and music executive David Geffen to form DreamWorks Skg, which later was rechristened DreamWorks Animation. Its first feature film, released four years later, was “Antz,” a brash, adult-oriented CGI production about a worker ant struggling to stick out in the communal colony he slaves away in. The film was successful — it was the first non-Disney animated movie to gross $100 million worldwide — but it was also overshadowed by comparisons to “A Bug’s Life,” Pixar’s film released that year which also focused on a misfit ant trying to save his ant colony.
That beginning encapsulates the perception of DreamWorks Animation in a nutshell — as the decidedly less ambitious, less artful cousin to Pixar. And it’s hard to say that reputation is totally unearned. DreamWorks is responsible for many lazily constructed, irritating animated movies, from “Shark Tale...

Sylvester Stallone has been a Hollywood staple for five full decades at this point. Dating back to his first turn as the underdog boxer Rocky Balboa in 1972's "Rocky," the actor has been a mainstay of the screen. Like any actor who has managed to stay in the game this long, Stallone has had his ups and downs, but he's still here and still relevant more than 50 years later. But what is the best movie that Stallone has ever been in? What is the defining moment of the actor's varied filmography?
Not that Rotten Tomatoes is the be-all, end-all for such a discussion, but the review aggregator is a measuring stick often used in the modern era. Well, according to Rotten Tomatoes, 2015's "Creed" stands tall above the rest of Stallone's films with a 95% approval rating. That is not all that surprising when we break it down (more on that...

The Wild Robot has broken a DreamWorks record with its Rotten Tomatoes debut. The new movie, which was written and directed by How to Train Your Dragon co-director Chris Sanders, is based on the Peter Brown book of the same name and follows a malfunctioning robot who lands on a desert island and begins to bond with a young gosling, accidentally reprogramming herself along the way. The Wild Robot movie is only the fourth non-franchise title released by DreamWorks in the 2020s after The Bad Guys, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, and Orion and the Dark.
Rotten Tomatoes has now compiled 25 different critics' reviews of The Wild Robot, including some early reviews out of the movie's Toronto International Film Festival premiere on September 8. At the time of writing, the movie's Tomatometer score is a perfect 100%. While the score will likely fluctuate as more reviews are added, for the moment it is...

Its shocking just how different critics' opinions of a film can be from audiences, as proved by the massive disparity of certain movies' scores on Rotten Tomatoes. These were movies that, for one reason or another, ticked all the right boxes for professional critics and left general audiences feeling disappointed or, in some cases, downright hateful toward a release. Whether it was remakes of beloved classics, movies that didnt line up with audience expectations, or franchise entries that went in surprising new directions, there are plenty of movies that divided critics and viewers.
Some of the most controversial movies ever split critics and audiences and have remained highly divisive. While a high critic score doesnt automatically make a movie great, the fact that these films have received such a disproportional reaction from critics and audiences means that they each have something interesting to offer and were well worth checking out...

Exclusive: Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Krysta Rodriguez (Halston) and Alan Cumming (The Traitors) have signed on to star in Lunch Hour, a new indie comedy from director Larry Guterman (Cats & Dogs) and Winter State Entertainment.
Delving into the anatomy of an affair, Lunch Hour watches as a soup-loving married man meets the soup-loving married woman of his dreams. Thereafter, both throw caution to the wind and engage in a messy affair for the ages.
Oren Safdie wrote the script and serves as executive producer. Hamid & Camille Torabpour and Nick Hagen produced for Winter State.
“I am thrilled to work with Oren, Hamid, Camille and the Winterstate team to bring this whip-smart comedy, driven by nuanced and complex comic performances, to the screen,” Guterman told Deadline. “I fell in love with the script and I knew that I had to be part of the special project.”

The 1998 sci-fi war film "Soldier" might be the best film in Paul W.S. Anderson's career. A kind-of-spinoff to "Blade Runner" (both films were written by David Webb Peoples), "Soldier" begins in 1996, when the American government implements a new program to raise children, from birth, to engage in combat. Over the course of decades, their souls are meticulously erased and they become wholly devoted to military conquest. The soldiers barely speak and don't appear to possess empathy or compassion. If anyone falls behind or displays weakness, they are executed.
One of the star soldiers of the program is Todd-3465 (Kurt Russell), who has been molded into a ruthless killing machine over the past 40 years. It is now 2036, and the Soldier program is under threat. It seems that a new breed of soldiers, genetically engineered ones, are stepping up to take Todd's place. The new soldiers are faster, stronger, can live much longer,...

Existential crisis, sarcasm, dry wit and soured relationships collide in Albert Brooks‘ charming comedy Mother. The director uses his signature style of comedic delivery and sentiment to explore the delicate nature of a mother’s bond with her son. Brooks has been called “The West Coast Woody Allen.” It’s easy to understand the comparison between the two prolific filmmakers. Afterall, they each write, direct and star in their own films, their stories are grounded and contemplative, and they’ve each voiced characters in animated features (Ants and Finding Nemo).
However, the nickname over simplifies Brooks’ work and minimizes the originality of his creative style. In Mother, Brooks uses his talents and skills — honed and perfected from over a decade behind the camera — for an in-depth, humanized reflection on growth, redemption and healing.

Struggling sci-fi writer John Henderson (Albert Brooks) finds his life at an impasse following his second divorce.

A quarter-century after lending his voice to Z in Disney’s CG feature “Antz,” Woody Allen is set to return to the recording booth and narrate the upcoming Spanish animated short “Mr. Fischer’s Chair,” which will formally add several key co-producers during this year’s Annecy Festival. The film’s directors have also given Variety an exclusive look at early concept art for the project.
“Mr. Fischer’s Chair” revisits the 1972 World Chess Championship, where Bobby Fischer faced off against Boris Spassky. During game 17 of their “Match of the Century,” the Soviet team accused the Americans of manipulating Fischer’s chair to maliciously harm his opponent, leading to an exhaustive examination of the Eames Executive seat.
The film is created and directed by filmmakers and producers Xosé Zapata and Lorenzo Degl’ Innocenti, who recently teamed on the Spanish Academy Goya Award-winning animated short “The Monkey.” Zapata is handling the screenplay.

DreamWorks' surprising success with the Kung Fu Panda franchise makes it the king of animated movie franchises, overtaking Disney's record. DreamWorks proves its dominance with successful multi-installment series like Shrek, Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda, while surpassing Disney. Disney's lack of ongoing sequels for its near $2 billion franchises leaves DreamWorks as the animated movie franchise leader with smart moves.
Although DreamWorks is often regarded as a comparatively minor player in the animated space compared to Disney, the studio's latest hit has seen it score a surprising win against its major competitor. Considering Disney's dominance of the genre for more than a century, it's unsurprising that most observers assume that they are by far and away the most successful animation-centered business. While this is true by most metrics, DreamWorks' new record proves that the picture is actually much more complicated than it seems.

They only come along every once in a blue moon: the dueling movies. 1998 was an especially unusual year in that it saw two of them hitting theaters, with killer asteroid films "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" going head-to-head within the same 12-month span as the animated insect flicks "Antz" and "A Bug's Life." There haven't been too many since then, save for the clash of the White House action-thrillers in 2013 with "Olympus Has Fallen" and "White House Down." Now, 2024 is bringing us the next big showdown between movies with remarkably similar premises.

Live-action remakes of classic fairy tales have been on the rise in the past decade, yet directors and writers create completely different atmospheres for the same story. There is still variety among movies with similar plots because each creative will see the story and what it can be differently.

It’s a quiet month on Netflix in January, but the streamer still has some good stuff lined up for the new year, including an interesting documentary about the Centra Tech cryptocurrency scam. Bitconned arrives on the first of the month alongside Netflix’s latest Harlan Coben adaptation, Fool Me Once, which sees an ex-soldier called Maya witness her husband’s murder on a nanny cam. The crime then leads her down a deadly path where she uncovers a deadly conspiracy.

The Prince of Egypt was conceived as a "brother story" idea by Steven Spielberg, focusing on the relationship between Moses and Rameses as they grow up together and eventually become antagonists. Despite not receiving a story credit, Spielberg's influence was still extremely important in the creation of the film, given his role as one of the founders of DreamWorks Animation. The Prince of Egypt successfully managed to tell a religious tale on a grand scale while remaining entertaining, personal, accessible to children, and a musical, making it a classic animated film.
The Prince of Egypt songwriter Stephen Schwartz explains Steven Spielberg’s role in the film’s production. Released in 1998, The Prince of Egypt is a DreamWorks animated musical surrounding the story of Egyptian Prince Moses on his journey to become the leader of his people. Despite their rivalry, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have a playful relationship and have appeared in movies together like The Expendables. Stallone regrets accepting the lead role in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot because Schwarzenegger tricked him into thinking he was interested in the film. Schwarzenegger could have excelled in roles like Barney Ross in The Expendables or Rocky Balboa, bringing his distinct style and persona to the characters.
While Sylvester Stallone has had plenty of hugely memorable roles, it is hard to deny that there are some acting parts that his oldest rival, Arnold Schwarzenegger, would have done better. The two are both known for their action-packed films and, despite having unique personas and acting styles, it makes sense to compare the two to each other. While earlier in each of their careers the animosity between the two would lead to direct attacks on one another in the media,...

Aardman’s flock of clay chickens is back. And so is their composer.
23 years after Chicken Run became a stop-motion smash hit, Ginger, Rocky, Babs, Mac and the rest of the coop are returning for Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, landing on Netflix on Dec 15. If the music sounds similar, it’s because Harry Gregson-Williams, who composed the original score alongside John Powell, has also returned.
In the more-than-two decades since the first film, the L.A.-based Brit — who has worked closely with Hans Zimmer for much of his career — has scored dozens of major titles for filmmakers including Ridley Scott, Joel Schumacher, Ben Affleck and Antoine Fuqua. Alongside movies such as Shrek 1, 2 and 3, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Kingdom of Heaven, The Chronicles of Narnia, Prometheus, The Martian, The Meg and House of Gucci, the music man has also ventured back to Aardman for the...

As the end of the 20th century came to a close, traditional 2D animation seemed to be dying along with it. But while Disney Renaissance films are often remembered by nostalgic Millennials as the last great ride of hand-drawn animation, their grand, sweeping scale was actually made possible by blending old-school techniques with brand new technology. In the ballroom scene from 1991's "Beauty and the Beast," a hand-drawn Belle and Beast waltz against the spinning backdrop of a CG-animated ballroom; the heart-stopping stampede in 1994's "The Lion King" has a traditionally-animated Simba fleeing from computer-animated wildebeest.
The balance soon tipped over in favor of the completely CG animation that dominates today. But somewhere between the release of "Toy Story" and "Shrek," a British studio called Aardman Animations ambitiously embarked on its first feature film: a poultry-themed spin on "The Great Escape" called "Chicken Run." With a final tally of $227.7 million at the global box office,...

Sylvester Stallone is a Hollywood legend known for his work in action flicks and his talents as an actor, screenwriter, director, producer, and fight choreographer. While Stallone has appeared in many franchises with sequels, there are still some of his standalone films that would benefit from a follow-up. Stallone has showcased his abilities in various genres, from animated films like "Antz" to sci-fi flicks like "Demolition Man."
Sylvester Stallone is a bona fide Hollywood legend - especially regarding his work in action flicks - with dozens of movies to his name, many of which have had sequels, but a handful of which audiences are still waiting to see follow-ups for today. The Rocky, Rambo, Expendables, and Guardians of the Galaxy movies in which Stallone has appeared are all franchises with at least one sequel in which the star has appeared. However, seeing sequels to some of his best standalone films would be great.

Media, entertainment and creation will be the industries most impacted by the emergence of artificial intelligence, DreamWorks Skg cofounder Jeffrey Katzenberg said Thursday, and that will likely mean drastic cuts in the number of people needed to produce the art forms.
“If you look at sort of a historical perspective, you know, whether we went from a pen, a paintbrush, a printing press, a still camera, a movie camera,” the longtime industry executive said at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum. “These are things that just expanded creativity and all sorts of storytelling and extraordinary ways.”
The evolution of the industry has been “explosive” in the last decade, said Katzenberg, who was one of the losers in the explosive growth of streaming when his Quibi service shut down after just seven months in 2020.

Pixar's gamble on an Incredibles sequel paid off, even though it took 14 years for it to happen. A Bug's Life made a respectable commercial performance, but its box office suffered due to competition with Dreamworks' Antz. While it is unlikely that A Bug's Life 2 will happen, a cryptic tweet from Pixar sparked speculation that the idea may not be dead.
Pixar’s gamble on an Incredibles sequel paid off despite the lengthy gap; it’s possible that the studio could repeat the success with A Bug’s Life breaking a major record. The original 1998 A Bug’s Life was Pixar’s second-ever feature film after 1995’s Toy Story. The film follows Flik, a misfit ant who goes looking for a group of “warriors” to protect his colony from a protection racket run by grasshoppers. "Twin movies" confuse audiences when released too close together, blurring the lines between films and adding to audience confusion. Similar titles can lead to confusion, even if the plots and genres of the films are completely different. Yearly releases of strikingly similar movies show that this phenomenon isn't going away, with cultural trends and information exchange among Hollywood writers possibly contributing to the similarities.
With so many movies released over the years, some are bound to be so similar that audiences can hardly tell them apart. In some cases, this results from a studio attempting to build on the success of another studio's successful product. However, these "twin movies," as the phenomenon is called, are often released too close to one another for either to have influenced the other. This only adds to audience confusion, and the lines between the films become blurred.

Critics aren't always right when it comes to either negative or positive reviews, but there are some wildly unpopular movies that critics really surprisingly loved upon release. Critics and audiences don't always see eye to eye, as audiences generally enjoy exciting popcorn flicks that may receive mixed reviews, and critics prefer movies that tend to be more challenging and less immediately entertaining. However, for the most part, review aggregate websites are great sources for seeking out the best current movies. Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic provide average ratings on movies from critics, and users will often find great critically acclaimed films that were overlooked when first released.
On the other hand, critics have been overwhelmingly wrong about a handful of movies in the past, and even they'd admit that their initial assessment of these films might have been a little misguided. All of these movies are rated highly on Rotten Tomatoes with a "fresh" rating,...

Though most Pixar feature films are both critically acclaimed and popular among audiences, some of their movies weren't granted the appreciation or long-term attention that they deserve. Since Pixar's founding in 1986, the animation studio has put out 27 feature-length films. Pixar's movies are best known for their emotional storylines and innovative animation styles. These films have seemingly covered every conceivable premise from talking toys to personified elements. Over the years, Pixar has won 11 Oscars for Best Animated Feature.
Despite the overall success, Pixar has experienced multiple box-office flops and put out releases with substantially negative reviews. Some films have gained unwarranted hatred due to the storylines and themes. Many of Pixar's sequel movies have also struggled to gain traction due to the large shadow cast by their predecessors. This doesn't mean the films lack merit, though. Even lower-rated Pixar movies still possess traits that make them interesting or well-crafted. All things considered,...

The Toronto International Film Festival will open its 2023 edition on September 7 with “The Boy and Heron,” the first movie in 10 years from veteran Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki. The selection, first reported by IndieWire last week, marks the first time in the festival’s 48-year history that it will open with an animated feature.
While the plot has been a secret since its inception, “The Boy and the Heron” opened earlier this month in Japan under the title “How Do You Live?” and has been earning strong reactions as an emotional and visual experience unique to the auteur behind such revered classics as “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke.”
TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey, who traveled to Tokyo in early July to screen the movie, addressed speculation that the project was intended as the 82-year-old Miyazaki’s swan song. “If this has to be his final statement on screen, I think it’s a perfect one,...

Olympus Has Fallen was a huge box office success, but White House Down, which had a similar premise and was released just three months later, was a major box office bomb. Released in June 2013, White House Down is an action movie directed by Roland Emmerich and follows John Cale (Channing Tatum), a Capitol Police Officer who has to protect the U.S. President, James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) from a terrorist group. That's eerily similar to another 2013 action movie, Olympus Has Fallen, which follows former Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler), who also has to protect the U.S. President (Aaron Eckhart) from a terrorist group.
The success of Olympus Has Fallen led to an action movie franchise, including two sequels. The Has Fallen film series has made more than half a billion dollars, and now there is a TV show spinoff titled Paris Has Fallen in production. Additionally, the...

It has been 15 years since Ford last played the fan-fave role of the history professor turned action-adventurer, and having just turned 80, “Dial of Destiny” most definitely will be his last foray as the character. While Phase 4 functioned as a transitional period, MCU Phase 5 will see the franchise delve deeper into the concepts that will play a pivotal role in the Avengers' looming big battle against Kang the Conqueror. Unfortunately, the Multiverse Saga is struggling to find its footing, with a string of underwhelming projects that is unusual to the MCU.
Much has been said about Marvel Studios' approach to its storytelling after the Infinity Saga. Suddenly, the franchise is faced with multiple criticisms that the first three phases of the franchise didn't have. Scattered narratives and lack of direction have been consistently brought up in recent years even as Kevin Feige laid out their overarching plan for the Multiverse Saga.
