Sometimes a film will speak directly to a person in an audience: A preternatural, unearthly tendril of luminous light tapping you on the shoulder, a benevolent yet mysterious voice reminding you of an obligation, or a musical, colorful Dream Message entering your eyes and speaking to your soul with wonder, awe and truth. Like other Art forms, film can do amazing things.
For me, there are definitely a few choice films of overwhelming, pristine power. Yet one cinematic work is not just great, deeply special to me: ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind.’ Directed by the Wonderkind, Steven Spielberg, directly after his landmark suspense-adventure film, ‘Jaws’.
Now, his new flick, released in 1977, also dealt with the fantastic, with riveting moments of terror… but its endgame was something quite dissimilar.
I think it would take either a first-rate Psychologist or an Exorcist with a lot of...

Rescue efforts are still underway as thousands in the Houston, Texas, area are feeling — and fleeing — the effects of Hurricane Harvey. In some cases, these refugees in need of help or rescue are pets and other displaced animals local to the region.
From Good Samaritans like Andrew White, who helped his neighbor rescue her dog (see above) with his boat, to everyday residents like Naomi Coto carrying her dog to a safe place as she evacuates her flooded home (main photo), heart-tugging stories from Harvey’s frontline abound. Here are a few of the most extraordinary examples of animals overcoming...

Not a lot of mystery to this weekend: It belongs to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (Disney). Still, a couple of questions remain: Will it be the biggest first-weekend number of the year? And: Will the gross be 10 times bigger than whatever’s in second place?
Lowball estimates for this intergalactic prequel/spinoff/adjunct/special event have it opening at around $150 million; that’s almost $100 million less than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” exactly one year ago. Without the excitement of a first franchise episode in a decade, falloff is inevitable.
Read More: Arthouse Audit: ‘La La Land’ Box Office is Stunning
And, some context: Whatever number “Rogue One” accomplishes, December doesn’t historically lend itself to high-end openings. Apart from “The Force Awakens,” no other December release had even grossed as much as $100 million (“Lord of the Rings: Return of the King,” released in 2003, managed $103 million in 2016 adjusted numbers.

From Star Trek and Field Of Dreams to The Rocketeer and Krull: we salute the film scores of the late, great James Horner.
When composer James Horner died in a plane crash in June 2015, cinema lost one of its most profoundly emotional voices, and the final chapter on Horner's astonishing career has now closed with his last work: Antoine Fuqua's Western remake The Magnificent Seven. Horner actually wrote the score based on the script before the film even started production, such was his passion for it, and it's been posthumously completed by his longtime collaborator Simon Franglen.
To mark the occasion, here are the 25 most seminal scores from a lamented, legendary figure of film music.
1. Legends Of The Fall (1994)
Despite his reputation as a composer of melodrama, throughout much of the eighties and early nineties Horner had largely been pegged as a bold composer of action,...

The last time we heard anything about this film franchise, Sony had reportedly staked out release dates for Bad Boys 3 and Bad Boys 4 with Joe Carnahan set to direct the third entry and stars Martin Lawrence and Will Smith presumably coming back to reprise their roles from the first two films. Now we know that the third movie has a title change and a new release date:
Sony's Bad Boys 3 is now titled Bad Boys For Life--and will Not be released next summer, instead drops January 12, 2018.
— Exhibitor Relations (@ERCboxoffice) August 11, 2016
It's a good thing that release date changed, because it was originally set to come out this February (yeah, six months from now). Instead, they'll have a whole year and change to perfect the script, shoot, and edit. And if this movie does well enough, I wouldn't be surprised to see two more sequels, which if this title is any indication,...

The much-discussed Space Jam 2 now has a director (Justin Lin) to go along with its star (LeBron James), and fans of the original (well, me, anyway) have just one question: How will the sequel's soundtrack ever live up to the original? You know, the Space Jam soundtrack. The one that gave the world "I Believe I Can Fly" and eventually went platinum six times over? That soundtrack. Released on Nov. 12, 1996, below please find a celebration of the singular piece of art that is the Space Jam soundtrack. "Fly Like an Eagle" In 1996, Seal had just won three Grammys for "Kiss From a Rose,...

There are worse reasons to make a movie than advocacy, but Malcom B. Lee’s Barbershop: The Next Cut feels so distractingly reverse-engineered from its talking points that the movie nearly halts to a stop whenever the movie visibly shifts from a hang-out vibe to something more narratively ambitious. The third installment (or fourth, if you count the 2005 spin-off) in a series that began near the turn of the century, The Next Cut too rarely has a razor-sharp wit, but aiming for a bigger bullseye than ever, it still hits the target more often than not.
Set in the Southside of Chicago (but filmed in Georgia), ground zero of the highest statistics of gun violence in the United States, Calvin (Ice Cube), the wizened and pragmatic co-owner of the barbershop/beauty shop, is still snipping the hair of regulars even as just outside the door, kids are gunning each other down.

It was another night of self-congratulating stars, passionate speeches being interrupted by play-'em-off music ("Ride of the Valkyries"? Really???), and several genuine upsets (Rylance over Stallone; Spotlight over The Revenant) — as well as a scorching Oscars monologue that will go down as one for the ages. There were inspirational and uplifting moments, there were cue-the-sad-trombone gags gone wrong, and then there was Stacey Dash wishing everyone a "Happy Black History month." Here are the 20 best, worst and genuinely Wtf moments from last night's Oscars 2016 broadcast. Here's hoping we see Rock...

With its special Tuesday episode, Jimmy Kimmel Live! helped launch (Red) Shopathon, which is raising money for the battle against AIDS by offering celebrity experiences to winning donors through the Omaze platform. U2 frontman/(Red) co-founder Bono appeared live via satellite to kick off the campaign, teasing his own self-referential offer: a bike ride through New York City's Central Park.

Tonight, The Roast of Justin Bieber will air on Comedy Central and the masses will get what they’ve long been waiting for: a public shaming of Justin Bieber. Of course, some of the special’s most notable put-downs of the pop star have been publicized, including insults from the likes of Roast master Kevin Hart (“Justin’s Canadian. He’s actually considered American, because no Canadian has ever been this much of an asshole”), Shaquille O’Neal (“Last year you were ranked the fifth most hated person of all time. Kim Jong-un didn’t even score that low, and he uses your music to fuckin’ torture people”), and Jeffrey Ross (“You’ve become a cocky little shit. You are the King Joffrey of pop”).
While Bieber’s burns are definitely scorching, he’s hardly the only Roastee to get royally humiliated during their special. As we count down to The Roast of Justin Bieber,...

With moviegoers mostly staying away from Chappie and Unfinished Business, the first weekend of March wound up being the slowest one so far this year.On more positive notes, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opened to a solid $8.5 million, while American Sniper passed The Hunger Games: Mockingjay*Part 1 to become the highest-grossing movie from 2014.Playing at 3,201 locations, Chappie opened in first place with $13.3 million. In comparison, director Neill Blomkamp's previous movies*District 9 and Elysium*opened to $37.4 million and $29.8 million. Chappie also opened noticeably lower than last month's Jupiter Ascending ($18.4 million). It's unfair to suggest that Chappie should have been opening on par with Elysium, which had an A-list star (Matt Damon) in its lead role and was supported by a bigger, more exciting marketing effort. At the same time, $13.3 million is a pretty poor start for a sci-fi flick from a major studio. So what went wrong?...

Thanks to a solid debut in China, Jupiter Ascending took the top spot at the international box office this weekend. The movie opened to $23.2 million in the world's second-largest market, which is more than it earned in its first weekend in the U.S. Through just three days, Jupiter Ascending has grossed more in China than in its next three international markets combined. So far, Jupiter Ascending has taken in $107 million overseas. With another $30-million-plus on the way in China, plus an opening in Japan, it should ultimately reach $150 million overseas. Regardless, with a weak domestic number and a massive budget, the movie is still poised to lose a ton of money.Big Hero 6 added $19.6 million this weekend, which brings its total to $383.5 million. Most of that came from China, where the movie took in $15.9 million in its second weekend (a slight increase over its two-day debut). It now...

While it didn't quite return Will Smith to his former box office glory, Focus (2015) still easily took the top spot on a quiet weekend at the box office.Kingsman: The Secret Service and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water held on to second and third place, respectively, while The Lazarus Effect got off to a so-so start in fifth.Focus opened to $18.7 million this weekend, which is a bit lower than Crazy, Stupid, Love.'s debut (that's the last movie from directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa). It ranks in the bottom half of Smith's movies; it is at least ahead of Seven Pounds ($14.9 million), though that movie's December opening held is back a bit. Seven Pounds wrapped up its run with $70 million, which is a number Focus is going to have a tough time matching. The lower-than-expected haul could be placed on Smith's shoulders: Mib 3 and After Earth...

For the third weekend in a row, Fifty Shades of Grey easily took first place at the international box office. The worldwide phenomenon added $36 million from 59 markets, which brings its overseas total to a stunning $338.4 million. Holdover markets were off an average of 46 percent from last weekend. The movie's only new territory was South Korea, where it opened in fourth place with $1.8 million; according to Universal, this comparatively low debut correlates with the fact that the book never really penetrated this market.Fifty Shades of Grey has now earned $486 million worldwide, and is on track to reach $500 million in the next week or so.Playing in 67 markets, Kingsman: The Secret Service took in $25.6 million this weekend. It continued to do excellent business in South Korea, where it held on to first place with $5.3 million. Somehow it has been two years since Psy's hit song 'Gangnam Style' took over our collective minds and spawned the most awkward dance craze since the 'Macarena.' For months we danced to his whip smart takedown of upper class Seoul culture with minimal understanding of the unpinning to this catchy ear worm. Now that Summer 2014 is in full swing and still doesn't have a definitive song of the summer, Psy is back to to rescue us. Teaming up with Snoop Dogg, they're bringing Americans an apolitical pop tune. This time with more English so we have less to butcher as we drunkenly karaoke into the night, thinking we're ironic for singing 'Hangover' while still sloshed. But the best part of this new song isn't the poppy beat or easy to memorize lyrics. No. It's the amazing friendship unfolding between two musical icons in this video. #1. You know a video...

El Dorado
Written by Leigh Brackett
Directed by Howard Hawks
USA, 1966
When El Dorado was first shown in 1966, the Western in its classical form was beginning to disappear from American cinema. John Ford, synonymous with the genre, released his last feature that year, and El Dorado would be the second-to-last film by its own legendary director, Howard Hawks. The Western was evolving and its old masters were giving way to modern innovators. The stylishly self-conscious films of Sergio Leone first signaled the shift (the films of his “Dollars Trilogy” came out in 1964-1966), and it was certified by the critical, ominous, and violent The Wild Bunch, directed by Sam Peckinpah in 1969. Hawks decried the slow-motion bloodletting of Peckinpah. He argued that he could kill four men, get them to the morgue, and bury them before this newcomer could get one on the ground.
With this as the context of its gestation,...

The longlist for the Best Song category in the Oscars has been announced – so what should make the cut?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the longlist of songs for its Best Original Song Oscar in 2014, ahead of the nominations for the shortlist on January 14.
The list features 75 songs written for movies over the last year, with artists including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M83 all making the grade. Pharrell is included for his hit Happy, currently in the top 5 of the UK charts, which appears in Despicable Me 2, and other animated films make up a large proportion of those selected: Epic, Turbo, The Croods, Planes, Escape From Planet Earth and Monsters University all also get a mention.

Yesterday I reported that producer Jerry Bruckheimer had ended his relationship with Disney and inked a deal with Paramount, where he’d have more flexibility. I also pointed out that he’s seemingly looking to his past to try and ignite some future successes- with the word being that he was looking at sequels for Beverly Hills Cop and Top Gun. Well, the news today is that he’s continuing down that road. Over at Sony, Bruckheimer is now trying to get Bad Boys III off the ground. According to Deadline, a writer has all ready been tapped to write it.
David Guggenheim, who wrote the Ryan Reynolds-Denzel Washington thriller Safe House, is apparently the man for the job. Safe House was a moderate hit, and Sony is hoping he can write a script good enough to entice Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to return for a third outing as Lowrey and Burnett.

New documentary puts as many survivors of the southern country-soul studio scene on screen as possible
A long line of ghosts, some famous, others unfairly forgotten, haunts Greg "Freddy" Camalier's splendid music documentary Muscle Shoals. Duane Allman, Arthur Alexander, Wilson Pickett, half of Lynyrd Skynyrd… a full accounting of the dead is too sad to contemplate, but Muscle Shoals does us the great favour of putting on camera almost all of the survivors of a defining era in American popular music and of two feuding studios – Fame and its spin-off Muscle Shoals Sound – both located in a single tiny town on the Tennessee river.
If you've read Peter Guralnick's Sweet Soul Music you'll know much of the story, but Camalier puts ageing faces to names often only seen in liner notes. The central figure is legendary producer Rick Hall, a dyed-in-the-wool Alabama good ol' boy who, in a place...

Science fiction author and inspiration to Stephen King whose novels, such as I Am Legend, were adapted for film and TV
Richard Matheson, the prolific American writer of fantasy, horror and science fiction, much of whose work has been adapted for TV and cinema, has died aged 87. Cited by Stephen King as the biggest influence on his own work, Matheson sent shivers down the spines of readers and viewers for decades, with such unusual novels and stories as The Incredible Shrinking Man and the much-filmed I Am Legend.
He turned his hand to pacy adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe stories for the film director Roger Corman, to the story and screenplay for one of Steven Spielberg's most effective films, Duel (1971), and 16 instalments of the popular and ingenious television series The Twilight Zone. For Matheson, horror was potentially everywhere: battlefields, suburban streets, a cellar, an aircraft cabin – even a library.

Part of the Tony Scott: A Moving Target critical project. Go here for the project's description, index and links to project's other movement.
To the overabundance of text, sounds, images—and moving images—in Tony Scott, we reply with something like our own. So let me (try to) keep this (almost as) short as a Tony Scott shot. Scott’s death this past summer would elicit film critics’ own counterpart to American politics: opinions and generalizations bandied between two camps who were, as always, preaching to their respective choirs. And needless to say, such discourses would be about as useful, informative, and interesting as American politics. For Scott’s work was hardly encamped: the outward liberalism of Enemy of the State, perhaps Hollywood’s most overt attack on our surveillance nation and the Nsa, possible only before 9/11, concludes that only Nsa aspirants can take down the Nsa, just as Man on Fire,...

Jefferson Airplane: After Bathing at Baxter's (RCA)
This was the Airplane's second LP of 1967, and on it they took the studio freedom their two huge hit singles had earned them and went wild and unsupervised, making a real psychedelic album rather than the carefully contrived simulation of psychedelia that had been Surrealistic Pillow. The result had more avant-garde weirdness than hit singles (RCA had unrealistic hopes for "Watch Her Ride"), but the album actually coheres far better; for all the stylistic disjunctions and studio effects and Jorma Kaukonen's often-abrasive guitar sounds, and for that matter the nine-minute instrumental trio improvisation "Spare Chaynge," it flows organically, creating its own logic.
Cream: Disraeli Gears (I'm not even a Cream fan and I still have to acknowledge the brilliance of "Strange Brew," "Sunshine of Your Love," "Tales of Brave Ulysses," and "Swlabr")

“I can’t believe I agreed to this,” Bruce muttered, as he locked the front door of Wayne Manor.
“Hey, Bats!” a cheerful voice exclaimed from behind. Bruce turned.
“Peter,” he grumbled at the young man standing in the driveway. “I told you not to call me that when I’m out of the suit.”
“Sorry, Bats! Forgot,” Peter Parker replied merrily.
Bruce groaned inwardly. Here we go again, he thought. “Peter, what are you doing here?” he asked.
“I came to keep you company on the drive!” said Peter. “Plus, you know… Alfred thought if I didn’t, you might not come.”
“So… you came all the way out here just to turn around and go right back?” Bruce said wryly, walking to the car.
“Well, you know, it’s quick when you’re swinging through the air with the greatest of ease.” Peter grinned. “And Aunt May also...
