This movie gave an honest depiction of the generation gaps between the mother and her 3 daughters. The movie is completely neutral in the it does not take side, and gives a sympathetic look to both the mother's side and the 3 daughters' side.
What is hidden in the obvious theme of generation gap is actually the message of personal liberalization: The mother is still influenced by the traditional Confucian teaching and thus wants to select what she think is the best husbands for her daughters, while the daughters have totally different idea, longing for personal liberalization. The intention of the mother is good but such practice no longer fit the modern society and the movie is sympathetic to her while advocating personal liberalization by cheering what the daughters want to do.
