Eva Green's portrayal of Artemisia steals the show in the otherwise hollow sequel 300: Rise of an Empire. The 300 series prioritizes action over accuracy or story, with Artemisia standing out as a compelling character. Despite negative reviews, Artemisia's powerful presence elevates the revenge-fueled storyline in the film.

I never thought 300: Rise of an Empire could capture lightning in a bottle a second time, but the 300 sequel is just so hollow. Director Zack Snyder's 2007 historical epic uses Frank Miller's landmark graphic novels as inspiration to chronicle the Battle of Thermopylae. A key moment in the Greco-Persian Wars, Thermopylae saw King Leonidas leading 300 Spartans against the Persian "God-King" Xerxes. Although Zack Snyder didn't return to direct the 300 sequel, the filmmaker once again co-wrote the over-the-top screenplay for 300: Rise of an Empire with Kurt Johnstad.

ViacomCBS International Studios (Vis) has unveiled a new slate of projects tapping talents as diverse as “Guilt” writer-creator Neil Forsyth, “The Great” writer Vanessa Alexander, “Wild District” originator Cristian Conti and “High School Musical” writer Peter Barsocchini.

Underscoring Vis’ ambitions to play in the big league of international local content producer-distributors, both in production volume and breadth of content, Vis also confirmed its drive into documentary production, of both doc features and series, and unveiled its first four titles.

This year will, moreover, see Vis bow development and production of its first made-for-streaming movies and first content for Vis Kids, created last year.

ViacomCBS International Studios has announced that it is developing a TV series based on the life of Italian female artist Artemisia Gentileschi, who is considered to be one of the most accomplished painters in the Baroque period.

ViacomCBS International Studios has attached Pan’s Labyrinth producer Frida Torresblanco to develop the project, while former ViacomCBS International Studios UK managing director Jill Offman is also involved through her new outfit 66 Media. Both will serve as executive producers.

Currently in development and slated to begin production in 2021, ViacomCBS International Studios said the project will be the first TV series to depict Gentileschi, who was known for her violent, seductive autobiographical portraits and later became a figure of the modern-day feminist movement.

True Blood has a new vampire in its midst — and I have a feeling she's going to be very popular.

That tuxedoed Italian beauty is Valentina Cervi, who's joining True Blood in Season 5 as a series regular. According to TV Line, Cervi will play Salome, "an ancient vampire who is a world class seductress and fiercely intelligent." She is also a tiny bit mad. And although she is quite powerful, she is able to hide her abilities when she wants.

If Cervi looks familiar to you, you're probably a fan of foreign language cinema. Her best-known role is as Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the world's first female painters whose work remains well known today, in the controversial French film, Artemisia. (She learned to speak French for the part.)

Tribeca 2011 marks the world premier of Agnès Merlet's (Dorothy Mills) intriguing looking teen drama about living with powers beyond your control. It sort of reminds me of a kitchen sink Heroes, though I doubt the characters in Merlet's film band together to fight any super villains.

The Furlong men all were blessed or cursed with unique abilities. Ten-year-old James Furlong's father was able to shut off all electricity around him when he was scared, and his grandfather went temporarily blind when he thought about sex. James' mother died while giving birth to him, and as he experiments to figure out what his ability is, he unintentionally causes the death of his father and grandmother. Then, when he's sent to a reformatory school and sparks a strange illness that wipes out all the children who bullied him, James flees to a cottage in the woods to live a life of isolation.

Recently the Tribeca Film Festival announced it’s lineup for its heavy hitters: Spotlight, Cinemania, and Specials Screening sections. With selections such as Troll Hunters, Let the Bullets Fly, and Point Blank only scratching the surface of the variety and diversity of this year’s slate, Tff 2011 is looking out to be very promising. Spotlight is comprised of 33 films, including 16 documentaries and 17 narratives, 16 of which will world premiere at the Festival. The Cinemania section offers an eclectic assortment of eight narrative films that defy categorization from all around the world.

The film explores the relationship between Chicago Cubs fans and Steve Bartman following his infamous near-catch of a foul ball in Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship Series.

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.

Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.

The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).

I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
