I was shocked at the ending of Jim Enright's "Blindfold". Here's a porn-parody of George Orwell's "1984" written by Cash Markman, but after all the mandatory sex scenes had ended, Cash finishes the film on a serious, negative and effective note. Not enough to compensate for the hundreds of crappy videos he's made, but at least a step in the right direction.
Steven St. Croix stars as Brown, a guy in this totalitarian state of the future, who works at censoring magazines (beginning with a copy of AVN, of course) and books to remove the oirignal sexual content. Sexual thoughts are discouraged, let alone sex outside of government-sponsored procreation, in this future society, and as in the original "1984" there are TV broadcasts from the front lines documenting how the never-ending war is going on (using obvious WW II black & white footage).
Kylie Ireland is a co-worker named Smith (the name of the male hero in Orwell's novel), whose job is to destroy VHS porn videos, and as an in-joke, she takes home the box cover to one of them, Sin City's 1984 release "Never Say Never" (a porn parody of the Bond movie), which happens to star Kylie Ireland. Needless to say, it stimulates her masturbation.
Much of the video is taken up by sex scenes that are Brown's erotic fantasies. These include fantasies he has under the influence of a truth serum when he is tortured by his supervisor Tom Chapman, who is attempting to get Brown to rat out his colleagues. That leads to the tragic ending.
Other than the in-jokes, the movie maintains a quite serious tone throughout with minimal but effectively dingy sets for the life of the future and monotone acting. It hardly reaches the heights of George Lucas's similar "THX 1138", but is effective in its own way, and atypical for both Enright's and Markman's work.
