The Vatican is a place that’s known to be shrouded in secrecy, and the sudden death of a pope leads to an intense and hardly known process to re-elect another spiritual leader. Edward Berger’s political thriller, Conclave, takes us behind the doors of this procedure, in a world of alliances and betrayals.

With a stellar cast like Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow, Berger brought Robert Harris’ 2016 novel to life. But the twist in the end has sparked a conversation, and even experts have weighed in their opinion.

Disney+ is moving forward with its upcoming series Vision Quest, and some surprising names are attached. The show will bring back the Marvel android, but that’s not the only thing getting attention. The people behind the camera are just as interesting as what’s happening on screen.
Three directors will take charge of the series, each bringing their own touch. Terry Matalas, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard, will not only serve as showrunner but also direct. Alongside him, Christopher J. Byrne and Vincenzo Natali are set to helm episodes.
These two have been involved in major projects before, with Byrne having worked extensively in the Star Trek universe and Natali known for directing the sci-fi horror film Cube.
With this lineup, it’s clear that Marvel and Disney are pulling from both science fiction and horror influences. That could mean Vision Quest will have a unique look and feel,...

While we use movies as an escape from reality, 3D films take this escapism into a whole new dimension, quite literally. Thanks to 3D technology, filmmakers have the freedom to give their audience an immersive experience and bring them into their fictional world. While directors like Martin Scorsese praise this advancement, Christopher Nolan challenges the view and admits that 3D filmmaking is simply not up his alley.

Jujutsu Kaisen's third season has one big problem lying ahead, but Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has shown how it can be overcome. Jujutsu Kaisen's manga and anime have already been lavished with praise. It almost feels redundant to say that the anime will make the manga more accessible and digestible, because that's typically the case. To that end, I wrote the book on why it's a great idea to read Jujutsu Kaisen's manga instead of awaiting adaptation. Jujutsu Kaisen is phenomenal as it is, in every form.
But it could be better. There's one key problem that many battle shōnen have in common—and I can't help but worry that it's hurt the anticipation for Jujutsu Kaisen's upcoming third season. Things in Jujutsu Kaisen's anime are at a vital juncture: Jujutsu Kaisen 0 centerpiece Yuta Okkotsu just got tasked with executing Yuji, all the Jujutsu High buddies...

James Wan’s Saw turns 20 this year and is back in cinemas. A look at one of the most influential horror films of all time:
There’s a comparitively small group of horror films that have, one way or another, changed the genre. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Night Of The Living Dead, The Blair Witch Project and Psycho have all left their mark, but more recent films aren’t always considered to be as impactful as the genre’s older offerings.
Yet, today’s horror landscape would look very different without James Wan’s Saw, which debuted in cinemas in October 2004 and recently returned to UK cinemas to mark its 20th anniversary. Saw kickstarted the so-called torture porn subgenre of horror along with Eli Roth’s Hostel, but it also brought in a whole new approach to the genre. The themes of entrapment and the fight for survival in a manufactured environment have become recurrent narrative tropes in 21st-century cinema. While Vincenzo Natali’s “Cube” (1997) put a sci-fi spin on the survival quest of a group of strangers, the Japanese action thriller “Battle Royale” and similar iterations (including the hit Netflix series “Squid Game”) found grim sociopolitical parallels to our contemporary dog-eat-dog world. The winsome young adult stories like “Hunger Games” and “Maze Runner” put a dystopian cloak to the survival game tales. Then there were also richly allegorical dystopian visions in movies like “The Snowpiercer” and “The Platform.” The latter of the two – from Spanish filmmaker Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia – felt like an assortment of familiar sociopolitical elements ensconced within this familiar narrative, but it offered unique twisty visual delights and an ever-deepening metaphor for social inequality.

“The Platform 2” is a movie directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia starring Milena Smit, Hovik Keuchkerian, Natalia Tena y Óscar Jaenada.
Dive into the harrowing depths of “The Platform 2,” a nightmarish odyssey exploring themes of struggle, social justice, and religion across 333 torturous levels. This brutal allegory masterfully portrays life, social stratification, indoctrination, societal norms, and humanity’s ceaseless quest to quell an insatiable hunger. As the much-anticipated sequel to the 2019 Netflix hit, “The Platform 2” loses some of the original’s shock value but compensates with superior technical prowess and a well-crafted script, making it a worthy successor in a genre-defying cinematic landscape.
The film stands out at a technical level, showcasing the director’s adept use of cinematic tools to immerse the audience in a surreal, harrowing nightmare reflective of the human condition.
Plot Synopsis
The story plunges us into an unsettling experiment where prisoners inhabit various levels of a vertical prison.

B-movies are cult classics, typically low budget films in genres like horror, sci-fi, and action, with campy charm and creative premises. Directors like Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson excel at making small budgets stretch, turning B-movies into pop culture phenomena with creative talent. Films like "Cube," "Hardware," and "Tremors" showcase the unique and diverse offerings of B-movies in the 90s, ranging from horror to sci-fi.
The humble B-movie is something of a lost art form in the modern era, with the 1990s possibly being the last great decade for the genre. Isn’t it astonishing how an iconic role can catapult an actress into the limelight, only for her to seemingly vanish like a needle in a haystack afterward? Such is the case with Natalie Dormer, who rose to prominence playing Margaery Tyrell, a shrewd noblewoman on Game of Thrones.
However, in the explosive finale of Season 6—a highlight that left fans reeling—Dormer’s charismatic queen meets a fiery end, ejecting the actress from the Game of Thrones roster.

Canadian director Vincenzo Natali's Cube has become a cult phenomenon, now restored in 4K by the Canadian Film Centre. A precursor to the Saw franchise of deadly games, Natali's sci-fi horror pitched the premise of strangers waking up in a giant cube structure, made up of over 17,000 cube-shaped rooms. To escape, they must navigate the labyrinthine structure and avoid triggering the deadly traps contained inside each cell. At this year's Fantasia International Film Festival, Natali was bestowed with the Canadian Trailblazer Award.
The filmmaker's work has not always been met with popular appeal, but he has never sought to repeat himself. After Cube, he directed two feature films in quick succession, beginning with the sci-fi espionage film Cypher (2002), before merging sci-fi and surrealist comedy in Nothing (2003). Then, he shifted back towards Cube's darker tones, coupling sci-fi with horror in Splice (2009), and...

Stephen King movies have been with us almost as long as Stephen King books — King's first novel "Carrie" became a film two years after it hit bookshelves. And while the adaptations have been coming steadily since the '70s, King movies and TV shows experienced something of a boom in the 2010s. This was primarily due to 2017's film adaptation of "It," which became a horor blockbuster, hauling in $701.8 million at the box office. Suddenly, everyone wanted to be in the Stephen King business again, and the aftermath of "It" saw a wealth of adaptations get the green light. This trend hasn't died out, either — new King adaptations continue to come our way. A long-delayed take on "Salem's Lot" is due out on Max later this year, and film adaptations of the King short stories "The Life of Chuck" and "The Monkey" are both on the horizon.

I wonder what exactly went behind conceiving a movie like The Abandon and then actually making it! If we only go by the idea of it, the sci-fi thriller, directed by Jason Sutterlund, can’t be termed bad, per se—even if it borrows from tons of other things, mainly from Cube (1997) and Buried (2010), both much superior films. But the issue here is that this one, despite having an interesting story, feels like a slog. Ninety-seven minutes feels like an eternity. There are only two things that can be blamed here: the writing is bland as hell, and lead actor Jonathan Rosenthal is no Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Hardy, or even Ryan Reynolds; no offense. What’s even worse is that the payoff in the end is unsatisfying. I’m all for an ambiguous ending, but this one feels like nothing but a gimmick. However, I’m still going to make...

Vincenzo Natali's 1997 film "Cube" takes place entirely inside a strange, unexplained high-tech ... prison ... of some sort. It is constructed of cube-shaped cells with hatches on all four walls, the floor, and the ceiling. Each hatch leads into an identical cell, only distinguished by its colored lights and a series of cryptic numbers etched into the doorways. Random cells throughout the structure are armed with deadly booby-traps. There are no bathrooms, no food, and no water. Six strangers find each other in this prison wearing identical jumpsuits, unsure how they arrived there or why they have been imprisoned. They slowly begin to decipher the numbers to determine which rooms have traps and which ones do not. Naturally, they all slowly begin to go mentally deteriorate.
"Cube" was produced for a modest $350,000 (Canadian), but its intriguing "Twilight Zone" premise and taut direction allowed it to catch on as a cult hit.

Other world premieres included in the line-up are “The Beast Within” starring Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”), which follows a young girl as she starts to question her atypical life in her family’s compound in England, and makes a shocking discovering about her dad; and “Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain,” with director Kenji Nakamura reviving the thrills of the original anime.
“Bookworm” stars Elijah Wood (“Yellowjackets”) and Nell Fisher (“Evil Dead Rise”). The official logline reads, “Mildred (Fisher), a precocious eleven-year-old bookworm, escapes her humdrum existence by immersing herself in novels where literary adventures abound, with a...

Vincenzo Natali nearly died while making his first movie, “Cube.”
Made on a shoestring budget, his 1997 psychological horror only had one practical set — a huge, boobie-trap-filled cuboid prison to house the film’s action and drama — and at one point, it nearly fell on him.
Thankfully, it didn’t. But the bad luck didn’t stop there. By the time he’d finished making his genetically modified body-horror “Splice,” the process had proven so difficult, drawn-out, and stressful that it had turned the then-40-year-old director’s hair gray.
“It was like having a child,” Natali, laughing, told IndieWire as his cult-hit creation turns 15. “If I didn’t care about the movie as much as I care about my own children, my hair wouldn’t have turned gray. It’s because I wanted this thing to exist so badly. Making [‘Splice’] was so stressful, it made me sick. I had something no doctor could identify,...

Everyone loves the Muppets. That is simply a truism in life, for anyone with a working pulse and a healthy joy gland. And so therefore everyone loves Jim Henson, the godlike creator/inventor/father figure of the whole Muppet project, whose creations — the colourful ensemble of goofy, absurdist, felt-based marionette-puppets — have become a beloved staple of film and television for seven decades.
This is a lovely feature-length documentary portrait of the Muppet man, as gentle and warm-hearted as the legend himself, if not exactly challenging or overly probing. It comes from director Ron Howard, these days as much a documentarian as anything else (in the last decade he has made roughly as many nonfictional films as he has fiction). Howard gives the piece some sparky, peppy visuals, via animated flourishes — Henson’s personal sketch book comes to life at one point — and a visual backdrop for its talking heads nodding to The Cube,...

These 1980s Peanuts comics are iconic, with relatable themes like sports mishaps, friendship, and school struggles. Peanuts has always had a timeless appeal, as seen in these strips celebrating their 40th anniversary. From Snoopy's basketball skills to Peppermint Patty's overwhelmed mind, these comics capture universal experiences using beloved characters.
The 1980s are the decade of the Rubik's Cube, MTV, and some of the funniest Peanuts comics that were ever published. Peanuts had been going strong for thirty years in the 1980s, showing no signs of slowing down. Now celebrating their 40th year, the comics published in 1984 remain iconic and notable strips of the classic Charles Schulz property. For instance, a fan favorite moment from Snoopy's Beagle Scouts was captured in April 1984, continuing to be enjoyed 40 years later.
It is no easy task to make entertainment whether in the form of comic strips, music, film, or any other medium that stands the test of time.

We learned earlier this week that “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller is no longer the showrunner of A24 and Peacock’s Friday the 13th TV series “Crystal Lake,” with A24 choosing to “go a different way with the material.” What does that mean? It means A24 is still planning on bringing a Friday the 13th series to life, but the overall vision will likely change.
Kevin Williamson (Scream, Sick) had been on board to write an episode of the “Crystal Lake” series, and Williamson took to Twitter today to tease some of those original plans.
Williamson writes, “Bummin’ hard, so sorry I won’t be a part of what would have been an epic Bryan Fuller show. Your pilot was so beautifully realized. A gorgeous portrait of a mother unraveling in her grief. Not to mention bloody horrific!”
He adds, “I was so looking forward to our hour long chase episode!

ABC’s Not Dead Yet is no longer living up to its title.
The network has canceled the comedy, which stars Gina Rodriguez, after two seasons. Not Dead Yet drew the smallest audience of ABC’s three half-hour comedies this season, averaging about 3.2 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day ratings (which don’t include streaming).
The cancellation leaves ABC with just two comedies on its 2024-25 schedule for the moment — Abbott Elementary, which is going into its fourth season, and The Conners, which is ending with its seventh. The network also has a pair of comedy pilots starring Tim Allen (Shifting Gears) and Ty Burrell (Forgive & Forget) but likely won’t make decisions on either one until after next week’s upfronts.
Created by David Windsor and Casey Johnson, Not Dead Yet stars Rodriguez as Nell Serrano, who takes a job as an obituary writer after her life falls apart.

Sanguis bibimus! Corpus edimus! In a partnership between Mutant, Hollywood Records, and 20th Century Films, the haunting soundtrack to "The First Omen" can soon be yours on vinyl. The prequel to Richard Donner's 1976 masterpiece, director Arkashsa Stevenson's most excellent "The First Omen" is the rare example of a legacy film done right, and what /Film's Witney Seibold described in his review, as "a film of dank, bloody, spittle-flecked dread, made no less powerful by the foregone conclusion." Donner's original film shocked audiences upon release and is believed to this day to be a cursed film, but Stevenson's prequel film had to fight with the MPA to avoid an Nc-17 rating, so the franchise tradition of scaring the squares is alive and well.
"The Omen" was scored by Jerry Goldsmith, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Score, but took home the "Best Original Song" statue for the movie's theme "Ave Satani,...

Vincenzo Natali mapped his brilliant, uncompromising vision in the 1997 sci-fi horror "Cube," a film that has retained its cult status over the years. Natali's work has always been rather unconventional within the ambit of the horror/thriller genre, where entries like "Cypher" and "Splice" embrace these eccentric sensibilities, focusing purely on the nuances of storytelling. "Cube" also follows a rather high-concept premise, where six individuals are thrown into a deadly and bizarre game of life and death, leaving little to no space for standard moral considerations. It is a film that challenges our understanding of how humans function within spaces that defy societal constructs, such as a death maze that demands the opening of doors to areas that defy logic with alarming mathematical precision.
"Cube" could have been yet another run-of-the-mill horror offering that relied on brutal shock effects for scares, but Natali evades such trappings by focusing minutely...

Marina Sirtis enjoyed reuniting with her fellow Star Trek actors in Picard season 3, despite not considering it her best work. Deanna Troi played a crucial role in unlocking secrets and piloting the USS Enterprise-d in the second half of Picard season 3. Sirtis compared her performance as Troi to Jonathan Frakes' role as Riker, finding the experience fun but not her best work.
Marina Sirtis doesn't consider her performance as Counselor Deanna Troi in Star Trek: Picard season 3 to be her best work, but she enjoyed her reunion with her fellow actors from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Troi also heroically piloted the USS Enterprise-d to rescue Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Captain Worf (Michael Dorn), and her husband,...

Director Vincenzo Natali's "Cube" is a movie that has earned its place in horror history. Released in 1997 (and more recently remade in Japan), the film was ahead of the curve in several ways, particularly when it came to its ridiculously brutal kill scenes. Anyone who has seen the movie will probably tell you that no kill scene is quite as memorable as that of Alderson's. Played by Julian Richings, he ends up being cut into, well, cubes. Turns out, this impressively gross kill was accomplished with practical visual effects.
The most recent edition of SFX Magazine did a retrospective on "Cube" and Natali provided some insight for the piece. For those who may need a refresher, the film centers on a group of strangers who wake up and find themselves in a giant cube. Each of them has a special skill and they must work together to escape the massive maze of deadly traps.

Most Trekkies will be able to tell you that Robert Wise's 1979 film "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" wasn't as big a success as Paramount had hoped. The film is famously slow-moving, aiming for cosmic grandeur and hefty evolutionary themes over the then-popular whizzbang action of "Star Wars." "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry oversaw the production of "Motion Picture," and the overall tepid response left him in Paramount's bad graces. This was in addition to multiple delays in filming, the production going over budget, and those common studio spats so often classified as "creative differences." According to William Shatner (as he wrote in his autobiography "Star Trek Movie Memories"), Roddenberry was essentially fired from the production of any potential sequel for "Motion Picture" as a result of all the drama, and the Great Bird of the Galaxy was given the faraway and somewhat demeaning title of "executive consultant" on any future productions.

The combination of sci-fi and horror opens up new realms of terror, from killer robots to alternate realities. Lesser-known sci-fi horror films like Cube and High Life offer unique and thought-provoking storylines. Sci-fi horror films like Under the Skin and Event Horizon deliver creepy atmospheres and masterful performances.

I’m thirty-plus entries into Revenge of the Remakes and have finally reached an original/remake pair where neither is American. Vincenzo Natali’s Cube (1997) is a maple-scented product of Canada’s independent filmmaking scene, while Yasuhiko Shimizu’s 2021 remake hails from Japan. You’re free of rants about stale Americanizations and Hollywood’s sometimes shortsighted approach to horror remakes. Welcome to a wholly international edition of my column that’s, in comparison, outside the box. I’m honestly surprised Japan beat us to a Cube remake in a post-Platinum Dunes world — although Bloody Disgusting’s Brad Miska reported Lionsgate was taking new Cube pitches as of May 2022. Don’t be surprised if a domestic project surfaces soon.
It’s a tale of two geometrical prisons influenced by cultural horror norms. Natali aligns with genre-bending Canadian minds like David Cronenberg, whereas Shimizu leans toward more operatic and soapy Japanese storytelling.

The horror TV genre has become increasingly popular and successful, paving the way for adaptations of horror movies for the small screen. The Innocents, Midsommar, The Shining, The Ring, It Follows, A Quiet Place, Cabin in the Woods, The Blair Witch Project, and Cube are all horror movies that have the potential to be adapted into compelling TV shows. TV adaptations of these movies could explore darker themes, offer more character development, and provide a deeper exploration of the storylines and lore of the original films.
With the increasing popularity of horror TV shows, many movies in the genre should be considered for a small-screen adaptation. Though it started out less abundant than its movie counterpart, the horror TV genre has been a mainstay since the 1940s. Some movies with limited budgets may fall short due to inadequate production value, preventing them from achieving greatness. Low-budget films sometimes fail to fully realize their ambitious visions due to financial constraints, leaving them as adequate but not exceptional. Additional funding could have transformed good movies into masterpieces, enhancing elements like casting, special effects, missing scenes, or the overall aesthetic, resulting in a more immersive and memorable cinematic experience.
Some movies are just good enough to be enjoyable but lack the production value required to make them truly great — a problem usually stemming from an insufficient budget. These movies may have a moment with terrible special effects that take the viewer out of the immersive cinematic experience, or perhaps the limited budget caused something essential to be missing. If only the studios had spent a little more, they could have wound up with brilliant masterpieces instead of merely adequate films.

Starfield gives you tons of options to build your ship to resemble iconic sci-fi vessels, including the ominous space station of the parasitic robots from Star Trek: The Next Generation known as The Borg Cube. Even the simple design of the Cube requires plenty of effort.
