Sean Bean will star opposite Luke Goss in "Death Race 2," the prequel to Universal's 2008 film "Death Race." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is now shooting in South Africa. Lauren Cohan, Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo and Frederick Koehler have already been cast. Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed the 2008 movie, is producing with Jeremy Bolt. Roel Reine ("The Marine 2", "The Lost Tribe") is directing. The film will go into the back story for the character named Frankenstein, a convicted cop killer in a wasting, futuristic American empire who takes part in a murderous racing reality show. Bean can be currently seen in "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief." Goss has appeared...

Universal Pictures has revealed that the straight-to-dvd "Death Race" prequel has started principal photography in South Africa and will focus on the Frankenstein character. It stars Luke Goss (as Frankenstein), Ving Rhames, Sean Bean, Danny Trejo, Frederick Koehler and Lauren Cohan. Roel Reine (The Marine 2, The Lost Tribe) is directing from a script by Tony Giglio (Chaos). Plot: 'Death Race 2' takes place in the very near future, as the United States economy begins to decline and violent crime starts to spiral out of control. To contain the growing criminal population, a vast network of for-profit, private prisons springs up, creating a lawless subculture ruled by gangs, cold-blooded killers and sociopaths. The worst of these prisons is Terminal Island. Convicted cop-killer Carl Lucas (Goss) arrives on the Island to serve his life sentence just as ruthlessly ambitious television personality September Jones launches the ultimate reality show, Death Race.

I seem to be in the minority when I say that 2008’s Death Race was a complete and utter waste of time, however somebody must have been listening, as the completely unwarranted sequel appears to be heading straight for a bargain bin near you!

Death Race 2, a completely unnecessary prequel to the original film (which starred Jason Statham) has an ok cast by all accounts. Starring Luke Goss, Ving Rhames and Sean Bean, the film is directed by Roel Reiné and has already begun principal photography. Check out the official press release below for more:

Death Race with Jason Statham was ok. I was hoping for a Cannonball Run type movie where the participants Had to go out of their way to run over people like in the original for points. Instead we got a bunch of dudes racing around in a prison yard. But it was still pretty action packed for what we were given.Here's to hoping the prequel goes the way of the original. Martyn Sanderson was a veteran New Zealand character actor from the 1960s. One of his later roles was as the gate keeper of Bree in Peter Jackson’s 2001 film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. He allowed Frodo and his fellow Hobbits entry to Bree before being trampled to death by the pursuing Nazgul.

Sanderson was born near Granity on the West Coast of New Zealand on February 24, 1938. He moved to Australia in the mid-1960s, where he worked in film and television as an actor and writer. He was seen in numerous films over the next three decades, including the mystical 1983 feature The Lost Tribe.
