This was Macedonia's official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 70th Academy Awards... and it is real Balkan magic from Roma people lives... makes no difference if it's made by Stole Popov or Emir Kusturica or someone else... the magic is in the air that those last free people on Earth breathe! Roma people in Macedonia are usually divided into cultural groups - those who think that they are connected to India (Gypsies) and those who are with an opinion that they all came from Egypt - (E)Gyuptsy. Well, this film is talking about the first group... and the characters were developed meticulously!
Lovely story, quite rough around the edges but it is typical for this part of the world... It is over two hours long but I wanted more... much more! Acting was superb, as well as the directing... maybe the editing could be done better, but it was quite a tough time for the Macedonian cinematography in the 90's, so it could be understood if they could not get the best editors available.
