Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes directed the original London stage version of the play, titled "The Rise and Fall of Little Voice", which was written especially for Jane Horrocks.
Billy (Ewan McGregor) did not appear in the original stage play. Writer and director Mark Herman, who had just worked with McGregor on Brassed Off (1996), liked him so much, he created the part specially for him.
The building that was used for the exterior shots of Hoff's Record Shop was on Barwick Terrace in Scarborough. It had been derelict for many years, and was restored specifically for filming of this movie. It was demolished shortly after this movie was shot. The nightclub scenes were filmed at Wallis' Cayton Bay Holiday Centre, about three miles south of Scarborough, sadly like the record shop, it too has been demolished.
Writer and director Mark Herman re-wrote the script when he came on board, expanding the role for Sir Michael Caine significantly.
