This short fell into the public domain after the original copyright holder forgot to renew the copyright after 28 years. Due to its public domain status, several VHS and DVD releases, many of which are low quality, have been released over the years.
Amadee J. Van Beuren produced three Felix the Cat cartoons in 1936, of which "The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg" was the first. The others were Neptune Nonsense (1936) and Bold King Cole (1936). A fourth was planned, to be entitled "Ski Outing" (production number C-28), to be directed by Tom Palmer, and introducing a character named Waldo. Animation model sheets from March 20 and 27, 1936 show Waldo as a rooster and as a cat. It was never produced.
