Synopsis: Small finnish village gets occupied by the soviets in the fall of 1939. The villagers end up working together with the occupants, especially since the soviets have among them finnish speaking propaganda people.
Extraordinary film. 'Kainuu 39' stars amateurs from the historical region the film tells about. The casting process is shown first thing in the film, creating a strong distancing effect which however curiously starts to vanish in the mind of the viewer, as they get sucked into the fates of the villagers (think 'Dogville'), despite the amateur acting. Magic of movies, and certainly the most original film about WW2 ever made in Finland.
