***SLIGHT SPOILERS*** this story is set in the Victorian era. lots of extras, lots of elaborate costumes. basic story is that dona beija rises from poverty to wealth through sex. i saw the series when i was younger and i can&#39;t remember if she was a gold digger or a prostitute/madam, but every man she encountered found her sexy and intelligent. the other women in the story hated her because she had what they desperately wanted- respect and power. throughout the series, she is looking for a diamond or peal or some other precious stone. in the last episode, the narrator says that a slave found it in the waterfall on her property. which basically means that this woman who had everything didn&#39;t have what she wanted most- love. not sure if it was based on a book, but i wouldn&#39;t be surprised- the period novelas usually are.
