Pepito is bound to become the village's midwife, something he never dreamed of becoming but was destined to be. Pepito's mother, Rose, a widow, becomes pregnant in a secret affair with her husband's married friend. She tries everything to abort the infant because of the embarrassment it would carry. However, all methods fail and the only way she can do to protect their family's reputation is by suicide. After a while Pepito falls in love with a married teacher. Pepito meets an assortment of people and situations that would prepare him for his journey to understanding life.
