There is an outcry among the teachers when a sixth-grade class announces that they do not want to go to the summer camp provided by the school at the Lake Balaton, instead they would organize an Indian-themed camp in the mountains. A group of teachers contact the school's principal with complaints, but he takes the plan surprisingly well and expresses his support for the students.

Even though the school principal approved the plan of the Indian-themed camp two weeks ago, not much has been done about it. The kids are just realizing now that this type of camp is much more costly, and they even have to find a camp leader that their parents trust. So the pooled fund-raising begins, while every person deemed suitable is interviewed.

The budget for the camping trip is almost there, but tents and equipment are still needed, and seems like the kids won't have enough money for that, but with some trickery and the help of their form-mistress this will eventually sorted out. A bigger problem is that their camp leader is drafted and they have to find a new guardian within two weeks. "Soldier for a soldier" - they think, and they write a letter to one of their acquaintances - who is in the army now - to take on the task.

The soldier selected by the guys earns two weeks leave from the army and takes the train to pick up the boys from their hometown. The entire teaching staff and the parents of the children are waiting for him at the train station and say goodbye with tears in their eyes. The soldier realizes only on the train that he will be the sole supervisor and he have to take all responsibility. All this, given the behavior of children, seems impossible.

Still on the train, scooting towards their destination, the soldier confronts the boys with the fact that it is impossible to live as an Indian in modern times, it goes against many laws. Instead, he organizes a military camp for them, where order and discipline reign, and if any of them doesn't like it, he's ready to take them home. The boys have no other choice, so they accept it. Meanwhile, three girls from their class board a bus to camp with the boys, and they reach their destination even sooner.

The girls, who slept in the abandoned forester's house, learn in the morning that the forester to whom they have been entrusted is on Holiday. All this is told to them by the lady who takes care of the supplies, and offers them to spend their vacation at her nearby farm, which is great as the boys soon arrive and the soldier was not prepared to supervise little girls. Exhausted boys just want to rest, but they need to build their encampment, like any ordinary soldier.

The three girls move permanently from the forester's house to the farm run by Aunt Annus, but first they express their displeasure to the soldier about the way he treats the boys. Constant preparedness and exhausting practice lead to the fact that on an afternoon of quiet rest, all the guys run away from camp and set up their tents close to the lake, now without any supervision. Meanwhile, at home, the girl's parents begin to worry about their children's safety, but the school's psychologist says this situation will benefit them.

The girls are worried about the boys, so they visit them in the camp, but there they find only the soldier left behind. Since he just sits aimlessly and doesn't even have food, they invite him to the farm, which he accepts. Meanwhile, the boys try to cook something on their own, but the food becomes horrible, so they starve. And if that wasn't enough, a huge storm arise during the night that destroys their camp.

Everyone finds shelter from the storm in the forester's house, and the next morning they have the opportunity to discuss about the past few days. The boys promise to be disciplined, the soldier to be more easy-going. Together they go to the village, on the way playing tracker. While the guys are eating ice cream, the soldier is captured for not wearing his official uniform. Leaving traces behind, the children successfully find him and free him.

When it turns out that he had no idea about this, the school administration drives to their campsite with plenty of food. Along the way, they are joined by the soldier's superior. Once there, they are happy to find that everything is in the best order and everyone is proud of the result achieved.
