The Electric Zoo festival returns to New York City on Friday for three days of Edm all-stars.

This will mark the festival’s 14th year in the city. It will feature major performances by The Chainsmokers, John Summit and Major Lazer. Other musicians such as Liquid Stranger and Nora En Pure will be in attendance.

While in production for Theater Camp, costume designer Michelle J. Li took a trip down memory lane to visit her high school theater department to figure out what kids were really wearing these days.

“I wanted to gain a sense of authenticity,” Li tells The Hollywood Reporter. With a background in theater that led her to the Carnegie Mellon drama school, along with a lifetime of attending Broadway shows with her family, Li, the daughter of Chinese immigrants, always knew she would end up in a creative field.

“The stereotype is that many Asian immigrant parents dissuade their children from pursuing entertainment or careers that are less financially stable, and it makes total sense,” she explains. “However, my parents did encourage me to pursue art, and so I always knew that I was going to land in something creative.”

The “SNL” star detailed how while filming “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” Season 3, he “almost died” after a horse he was riding was spooked at the sight of a drone.

“Actually, [it’s] not fun to be on a horse,” Yang said during his “Las Culturistas” podcast. “[I’ve] ridden a horse for camera. Guess what? This crew, and I love this crew, but this crew decided to have a drone, and of course the horse don’t know what the fuck that is, and then I almost died.”

He continued, “I almost died in Iceland! Even hundreds of yards away, these horses can clock. They were spooked and then I almost [fell off]. I almost got bucked, and there was part of me, though, that was like, ‘This is a good way to go.'”

Exclusive: Hacks co-creators Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello are taking to market the first project following their multiple Emmy wins for the HBO Max comedy series. Hot Robot, a half-hour genre comedy written by Genevieve Aniello, is being developed through Downs and Lucia Aniello’s Warner Bros. TV Group-based Paulilu Productions. Lucia Aniello, Emmy winner for directing the Hacks pilot episode, is set to direct Hot Robot, which will be shopped to streamers and cable networks.

Hot Robot follows a jaded young woman whose life is turned upside down when she’s recruited to work on a super-secret AI project by a big brother corporation.

Bowen Yang has made both Emmys and Saturday Night Live history.

The Saturday Night Live freshman, who has made his mark on the long-running sketch comedy show, became the first Chinese American actor to receive an Emmy nomination. The Television Academy, with the help of Jasmine Cephas Jones and Ron Cephas Jones, revealed the list of 2021 Emmy contenders on Tuesday.

In addition to becoming the first Chinese American male acting nominee, the Nora From Queens actor became the first Saturday Night Live featured player to receive a nomination for the annual television awards show. It’s just the latest mark Yang has left on SNL since joining the cast in 2019, when he became the series’ first-ever Asian cast member.

Dakota Johnson has landed the starring role in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the Jane Austen novel “Persuasion,” the feature directorial debut of acclaimed theater director Carrie Cracknell. The director most recently worked on Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge’s Tony-nominated performances in the play “Sea Wall/A Life.” The film adaptation is written by “Rain Man” Oscar winner Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow.

The film promises to take a fresh approach to the beloved story. Here’s Netflix’s logline: “Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.”

Alan Kim is one of the biggest breakouts of Oscar season thanks to his role in Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari,” and now his post-“Minari” career is taking shape. As reported by TV Line, the rising child actor has landed a pivotal role on the second season of Comedy Central’s “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.” The publication adds: “In flashbacks, Kim will guest star as the young version of Nora’s dad Wally (played in the present day by cast member Bd Wong).”

Kim has received critical acclaim for his performance in “Minari,” in which he stars opposite Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Noel Kate Cho, Youn Yuh-jung, and Will Patton. Set in a world of witches and shapeshifters, Molly Knox Ostertag's graphic novel series The Witch Boy is being adapted by Netflix as an animated musical with Minkyu Lee (Adam and Dog) as the director and the band Haim onboard to write music for the movie.

Disney+ blasted off into space — or at least prepared to — with Friday’s premiere of the Mercury Seven series The Right Stuff. But are you along for the flight?

Before you chime in with your thoughts, a brief recap of the first half of the two-episode premiere and its major players: The drama begins with a tension-filled scene on May 5, 1961, aka the day the first American man would be launched into space. Astronaut Alan Shepard (played by Limitless‘ Jake McDorman) accuses his Mercury Seven teammate John Glenn (Suits‘ Patrick J. Adams) of going behind his back.

An emerging generation of new Basque filmmakers is making its mark in the San Sebastian Festival, building on the foundations of now consolidated creative and industrial infrastructures.

Only time will tell if the Basque Country can follow in the footsteps of Catalonia, another richer region of Spain, and launch a modern day new wave. Expectations however, remain high.

The new generation is widely represented at this year’s San Sebastian.

A prominent member of the group is David Pérez Sañudo, whose highly anticipated feature debut, mother-daughter social drama “Ane,” plays at the festival’s New Directors sidebar. Handled by Latido Films, “Ane” was developed at the Madrid Film School Ecam Incubator, then won three prizes at Málaga’s Wip in April.

Imanol Rayo, winner of the Zinemira Award with “Bi anai” in 2011, presents in New Directors his rural tale “Hil Kanpaiak” (“Death Knell”), produced by Bilbao-based Abra Prod.

This quality in this year’s crop of home-grown productions at the San Sebastian Festival is no surprise to anyone following the region’s growth in recent years, but it is impressive.

Below, 20 Basque projects and finished films and series which stand out at this year’s event.

“Akelarre,” (Pablo Agüero)

A former San Sebastian Festival Co-Production Forum project, “Akelarre” is the latest from Cannes Jury Prize-winner Pablo Agüero (“First Snow”) and plays in this year’s main competition. Heavily influenced by Jules Michelet’s novel “The Witch,” Agüero’s period drama came from a “feeling of injustice that almost all works of fiction dealing with witch hunts perpetuate, clichés first created by the Inquisition.” Seven companies combined on the ambitious co-production.

Spanish producer-distributor and sales agent Filmax will handle international rights on Lara Izagirre’s “Nora,” the film opener at this year’s San Sebastian Zinemira Basque cinema showcase.

Selected for San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum in 2018, “Nora” is Izagirre’s second feature, following on ”An Autumn Without Berlin,” a Basque homecoming drama which scored a best new actress Goya award for Irene Escolar in 2016.

A co-production between Gariza Films and Tandem Films in Spain and France’s La Fidèle Production, “Nora” turns on a 30-year-old woman who lives with her grandfather in a small village in the north of the Basque Country. Although her dream is to become a travel writer, she is stuck writing the horoscope for the local paper and taking care of her friend Meri.

Tosh.0 has become the latest Comedy Central live-action series to come to an end as the ViacomCBS network makes a hard pivot to adult animation.

The show created and hosted by comedian Daniel Tosh will end after its upcoming 12th season. ViacomCBS and Tosh plan to shop the series to other networks and digital platforms.

This comes 24 hours after it emerged that Drunk History will not be moving forward with its seventh season.

Tosh.0, which looks at the ever-changing social media landscape, is Comedy Central’s longest-running weekly live-action show. Including the 12th season, which begins September 15, it will reach 300 episodes, having run for 11 years. The final season will feature 10 episodes with its finale on November 24.

“I look forward to doing an animated reboot of my show on MTV in 25 years,” joked Tosh.

Tribeca winners secures Australia, Spain deals.

Screen can reveal the first English-language trailer for Ruthy Pribar’s feature debut Asia, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca film festival, winning best actress for Shira Haas, best cinematography and the Nora Ephon award.

Haas, who played the lead role in Netflix’s Unorthodox, stars alongside Alena Yiv.

Gum Films is producing, while handling world sales is Italian company Intramovies, which has just inked deals for Australia (Moving Story Entertainment) and Spain (Alfa Pictures). Sales of North American rights to Menemsha Films have already been announced.

The BBC’s youth streaming service BBC Three has acquired the first season of Comedy Central’s hit scripted comedy Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens.

The 10-part series will land on BBC Three later this year and is headlined by Awkwafina, who stars in Crazy Rich Asians and won a Golden Globe in January for her role in The Farewell.

The show is inspired by her real-life growing up in Queens, New York. Raised by her Dad (Bd Wong) and Grandma (Lori Tan Chinn) alongside her cousin (Bowen Yang), Nora Lin leans on her family as she navigates life and young adulthood in outer borough-nyc.

Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens was renewed for a second season before the first even premiered on Comedy Central. It became a big hit for the ViacomCBS network, with its season finale drawing record ratings.

HBO Max will soon be the new home for ViacomCBS’ “The Other Two” and “South Side” comedies, which will hit WarnerMedia’s streaming service in 2021.

WarnerMedia announced that the first seasons of those shows will arrive on HBO Max in 2021, followed by new seasons that will exclusively stream as Max Original series. A specific date for the shows’ HBO Max debuts, as well as their new seasons, was not provided.

The deal also brings autobiographical comedy “Awkawfina is Nora from Queens,” which stars and is co-created by the Golden Globe-winning actress and singer, to HBO Max. The first season of that series is currently available on HBO Max and Season 2, which is slated to air on Comedy Central in summer 2021, will begin streaming on HBO Max sometime after its Comedy Central airing.

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2020 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider a whopping 111 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is up by three contenders from last year. Luckily they don’t have to limit their choices to just 10 shows. The Emmys did away with that restriction in 2017. Now, the TV academy tells its members to “Vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”

Don’t look for reigning Best Comedy Series winner “Fleabag” on the list below. This Brit hit signed off after only two seasons on Amazon Prime. Only three its six rivals in that race — “Barry,” “The Good Place,” 2018 winner “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Schitt’s Creek” — aired episodes during the eligibility period of June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020.
