Deepti is a widowed young girl who lives with her uncle in Calcutta. She meets Kulbhushan through a common family friend . He is an ex communist on the run . Very unhappy as his bosses refuse to help him further as their movement is now comign to an end in the state. Many of his comrades have gone into hiding . He likes her simplicity as he wishes to settle down to normal family life ( being tired of being hunted and running life long ) . She agrees (upon her uncle's death ) and they start a new life afresh in Mumbai. He works in a small firm with a low salary . She suffers another miscarriage and is melancholy depressed for a long time . As they wish to buy a bigger house , his friend suggests that she do modelling . Reluctantly she agrees as she has resigned to her fate now .she is tired of those dingy alleys . After the initial assignments, her boss ( Mahesh Bhatt in a short role ) starts demanding more and more from her for his Adivasi women's shoot She refuses point blank to wear revealing clothes just to sell those pictures to foreign media . By now , Kulbhushan has given in to greed and has taken a lot of money on her name . He keeps pushing and prodding her , initially tries to reason with her and then tries to force her . A lot of conflicts take p;ace between them and finally she falls from that very flat which they liked and commits suicide .
A poignant story about the naxalite movement . Many people who worked there could not adjust to normal family life later . Deepti , fragile and frail is perfect in her cotton sarees as a confused low middle class girl totally unaware of whats going on around her or her hollow future .Kulbhushan is a fine actor . He is uncertain, greedy , manipulative, caring , scared ... all at once . Mahesh Bhatt is likeable even if he comes for 5 minutes. The movie hardly has 6 or 7 main cast and manages to hold our attention till the end .
