As if we weren’t excited enough already, Jeff Goldblum has been busy teasing his work in Thor: Ragnarok, which finally rolls into theatres on November 3rd. With acclaimed director Taika Waititi at the helm, the cast that has assembled for this third Thor instalment is impressive to say the least, and among many others, it includes Academy Award nominee Jeff Goldblum in the role of the Grandmaster. While Goldblum is no stranger to big budget projects, having previously starred in Jurassic Park and Independence Day, Thor: Ragnarok marks his first real foray into the superhero arena. It seems that did not stand in the way of his improvisational skills, though.

The year is 1942. Tensions between the Allies and Axis forces are beginning to reach an all-time high as the most devastating conflict in human history rages on across the four corners of the globe, forcing high-ranking government officials on both sides of World War II to double down on espionage efforts and spying in a bid to one-up the opposition. Such a backdrop has proved fertile ground for filmmakers and storytellers for generations and will only continue to do so, as evidenced by Robert Zemeckis’ upcoming wartime romance, Allied.
Planting the flag on November 23, Allied‘s awards credentials stretch beyond its release window, given it thrusts Marion Cotillard and Brad Pitt – a veteran of Hollywood war movies following appearances across Fury and Inglorious Bastards – into the shoes of French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour and Max Vatan (Pitt), respectively.

One thing many don’t realize about Herman Melville’s inspiring Moby-Dick novel was the fact that the author took inspiration from the near-supernatural events that the crew of New England whaling ship Essex allegedly faced in the winter of 1820. Crossing paths with an immense and violent sperm whale, all aboard the vessel were essentially left at the mercy of the elements, and it’s this man versus nature dynamic that will underpin Ron Howard’s latest feature, In the Heart of the Sea.
Leading an ensemble crew of explorers, Chris Hemsworth leads the charge as first mate Benjamin Walker, and as today’s all-new trailer reveals, it isn’t long before all members of the Essex relaize that they are out of their depth in every sense.

“How many times have you fallen in love?” whispers the soft-spoken, delightfully innocent Therese Belivet in the moving new trailer for Todd Haynes’ Carol, which stars Rooney Mara and the Oscar-winning Cate Blanchett as a pair of mismatched women living out their lives in a post-war New York City.
Crossing paths by chance, Mara and Blanchett’s characters are from two vastly different social brackets, though such minor details and social stigma can’t prevent the pair from falling madly in love. It’s Blanchett’s titular, affluent woman who is stuck in a loveless marriage with Kyle Chandler’s do-gooder, and their relationship soon falls apart at the seams when he learns the truth.
Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s acclaimed novel The Price of Salt, Haynes’ latest is emerging as one of the frontrunners for this year’s race for Oscar. Boasting two talented actresses – and no doubt two...

If you’ve not had enough of the time-dabbling age-pausing hijinks of sci-fi epic Interstellar, then you might want to pay close attention to Lionsgate’s upcoming romantic drama. From filmmaker Lee Toland Krieger, The Age Of Adaline centres on Blake Lively as a young woman who is unable to age after a fateful accident, and thanks to Yahoo! Movies, we’ve got our first look in the shape of the above trailer.
Adopting a similar slant to The Curious Life Of Benjamin Button, the film picks up the story of Adaline Bowman following a near-fatal accident in the 1930s which renders her unable to age. As she watches her own daughter grow old before her eyes, she isolates herself from others. Her life-long journey sees the perpetual 29-year old severing ties in order to prevent painful goodbyes – until she finally falls in love. Crossing paths with Lively on the...

Thinking about my favorite of the Doctor’s adventures, one that immediately comes to mind is his journey to Tudor England. Crossing paths with an aging Henry VIII on the verge of a final marriage, the Doctor stumbles on a Dalek plot to kill him while companion Brianna is killed by the King’s Guard. Resurrected by the Pope, Brianna saves the day by brokering peace between Henry and the Catholic church, and using her love for the Doctor to melt the Dalek in disguise. If you’re a fan of Doctor Who but don’t remember this episode, that’s probably because this adventure was presented for the first and only time in Los Angeles for a single night in September of 2013. Also, it technically wasn’t an episode of Doctor Who. It was an installment of Doctor Who Live!, an improvised version of Doctor Who that I perform in twice a month.

Geeks struggle to make grandmasters out of computers, and to connect with the real world too, in an eccentric mock-doc
The fascinating spectre of the "Mechanical Turk", a chess-playing automaton that hid a real player, rears its head in the opening moments of this mock-doc-cum-existential-comedy from Funny Ha Ha director Andrew Bujalski.
Shot on authentically grainy early 80s video cameras, the film follows a conference of socially inept geeks struggling to teach bulky computers to play a game once considered the very index of human intelligence, only to discover that the machines are becoming moody.
Crossing paths with a self-awareness couples group sharing the conference hotel, the programmers are variously prodded into (artificial?) interaction with profoundly awkward results. Odd, but in a good(ish) way.

So many twenty-somethings of my generation wish they could just escape, be it from a mundane, ball and chain desk job, or a jobless after-college experience, or the debt-filled, stress-fueled lifestyle that our society now generates while we struggle just to keep our heads above water. We sometimes dream of just running away, hopping on a plane for a grand adventure we deserve, taking in all life has to offer – not watching it fly by as we put our nose to the grindstone day and day out, just to pay out our asses to do it again the next day.
That, in essence, is the story of Charlie Countryman, Fredrik Bond’s first directorial feature – except a death in our titular character’s family also prompts his adventure to a faraway land full of beautiful women, new friends, violence, gangsters, and incriminating evidence. Project X screenwriter Matt Drake essentially creates a mature fairytale,...

Sporting her perpetually disheveled hair and unknowingly about to meet her romantic fate, Adele (Adele Exarchopoulos) heads to school in the first frames of Abdellatif Kechiche’s Palm d'Or-winning film Blue is the Warmest Color (La Vie d'Adele: Chapters 1 &2) (Isa: Wild Bunch, U.S. Sundance Selects). The Franco-Algerian director’s latest film could be described as one of intimate ambition. It follows its characters for over a decade expanding 179 minutes of evocative imagery, which flies by on the screen with incredible fluidity, never giving the audience any indication of its length. Instead, the incarnations -- since such great takes mustn’t simply be called performances -- by the two leading actresses are so tremendously captivating that it is impossible to look away or not to be submerged into their passionate relationship.
In the tradition of many other coming-of-age tales, young Adele is preoccupied with her own sexual awakening. Her innocence and inexperience collide with the realization that she may not be like the rest of her girl friends. She tries to date a handsome boy from her class only to discover how unfulfilling that is for her, an event that resonates with confusion and discomfort, adding to the complexity of her teenage emotions. One night, tempted by curiosity and following her openly homosexual friend, Adele wanders around a lesbian bar where she finally meets the mysterious blue-haired Emma (Léa Seydoux). Despite the seemingly casual nature of their encounter Adele knows she has been looking for her. Crossing paths briefly just days before, she became instantly infatuated with Emma’s odd beauty, falling victim to the romantic myth of love at first sight.
During the first half of the film Kechiche organically includes philosophical hypotheses on the nature of love via several classroom sequences. He delves into the conflicting ideas of a predestined plan vs. random chance as two mutually exclusive possibilities for the path each human life follows. Regardless of which of these forces produced Adele and Emma’s serendipitous meeting, it is clear their lives will forever be affected by it.
Emma is a strong college art student fully accepted as a homosexual woman, while Adele is just starting to grapple with the implications of identifying herself with that label. Their differences are even more noticeable when they meet each other’s families. One is sophisticated, liberal, and above all accepting of Emma’s sexual orientation and career choice as a painter; on the other hand, Adele’s working class parents love her but are unaware of what goes on behind closed doors between the two girls. That secrecy and Adele’s inability to come to terms with her sexuality become the prime source of conflict for the couple.
Much has been said about the explicit depiction of sex in the film. Deemed by many as exploitative or influenced by the director’s masculine perspective (though some say he too is homosexual), the intimate scenes feel driven by passion rather than only existing for mere provocation. Daring and sensuous, these sequences of beautiful vulnerability speak volumes about the strenuous labor by the actresses and their director. Kechiche's style of Cinema Verite, combined with the terrific naturalism of Seydoux and Exarchopoulos' acting delivers a compelling film of outstanding honesty.
Each scene runs its course without the need to cut them short. They flow as small building blocks of a love story that exudes intensity and fragility. As the characters’ relationship develops into adulthood the lustful and vibrant passion diffuses and they begin to fall apart. Adele wants to be a teacher and Emma lives to paint, and as their two separate ways take form, their love for each other is tested. This slow-burning development of their flaws and aspirations allows the actresses to showcase their talent by throwing away any inhibitions and becoming their characters from the inside out. Seydoux as androgynous and tough Emma evokes a strange mystique. Her apparent maturity and assertiveness clash with Adele’s need to be loved and her indecision to come out fully as a lesbian woman. Few times before have two actresses given such audacious performances. Certainly these are two of the best roles in any film, from any country, in a very long time.
Blue is undoubtedly the work of an auteur. Even after all the scandalous accusations and discomfort towards the film, there is no denying this is a riveting piece of filmmaking. Every move and every touch is carefully planned to create a realistic yet dreamy account of two women who are consumed by ravaging love, who suffer through it, and who survive it. No one in cinema has ever gotten closer to conveying the mix of torturous anguish and insane joy of what it means to be in love as have Kechiche and his fearless protagonists.

Urbane Safari: Ben Drew’s Debut an Exercise in Abject Miserabilism
British musical artist Ben Drew, aka Plan B, makes his directorial debut with a story of the mean streets, iLL Manors, a misery tinged tale concerning a handful of characters residing in East London’s Forest Gate. Locale aside, Drew’s feature easily conjures itself as kin to some of the grittiest and best examples of cinema examining life in an urban ghetto, and is equally as bleak as a host of recent titles coming out of Russia, the heavyweight champ of cinema depicting life as an endless cycle of dejection. With pronounced stylization, Drew’s cinematic debut is as completely engrossing as it is often off-putting, and heralds an excellent new authorial voice in cinema. A rampage of blood, drugs, and dead dreams, this is the poetry of souls lost.

Here's the trailer for a new western thriller called The Legend of Hell's Gate: An American Conspiracy, which is apparently based on a true story. I'm a big fan of westerns, but I've got to admit... this movie doesn't really look that good. There's some pretty silly dialogue, when you watch the trailer it's not hard to miss.
The film was written and directed by Tanner Beard, and stars Eric Balfour, Lou Taylor Pucci, Henry Thomas, Jenna Dewan, Summer Glau, Jamie Thomas King, Kevin Alejandro, Tanner Beard, James Lafferty and Robert Buckley.
Here's the synopsis:

I love me some Westerns. But nowadays the only people who make Westerns are hard-up for a decent budget, so the results are always kinda, well, not so hot. But director Tanner Beard’s “The Legend of Hell’s Gate: An American Conspiracy” (not sure we actually need the “An American Conspiracy” part there, but what do I know) looks like it might have a decent budget. After all, it does have Eric Balfour, Summer Glau, and Jenna Dewan-Tatum in the cast. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Glau started karate kicking people in the movie? I mean, that would be awesome. Don’t expect it to happen, alas. Take a gander (as they used to say back in the day) at some images, posters and a trailer for the upcoming Western. The misty landscapes of suburban England are unassuming, monotone and bleak; the perfect environment to shroud a fantastical, alien planet and its otherworldly inhabitants. Set up off the beaten path outside the sprawling metropolis of London is the set of John Carter an epic sci-fi venture from Andrew Stanton, one of the main creative forces behind Pixar and the Academy Award-winning director of Finding Nemo and Wall-e, the producers of Avatar and Disney, a studio familiar with blockbuster filmmaking (see Tron Legacy and The Avengers).
Based on the novel Princess of Mars by pulp fiction god Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Carter transplants its titular hero, a Civil War veteran, to the red planet of Barsoom, better known to earthlings as Mars. There, Carter becomes embroiled in the political affairs of Barsoom's warring alien races: the Tharks, the local 8-foot, multi-armed, green beings; the Red Beings of Helium, who are mighty...

With The Ides of March, George Clooney has directed an understated drama set in and around a tight presidential primary in Ohio that speaks to broader flaws in the U.S. political process and disillusionment with our government.
On screen, however, Clooney is merely a supporting player as Governor Mike Morris, a smooth, eloquent Democrat who “believes in the Constitution” and importance of alternative fuels, for our economy and our vehicles. (I’d vote for him.)
At a televised debate, the camera hangs around out front to catch the candidates exchanging carefully-written rhetoric before slipping behind the curtain (or American flag, as it were) to the backrooms and campaign offices where those decisions are made, then eventually into the darkened stairwells and graffiti-lined alleyways where someone suffers the consequences.
Stephen Myers (Ryan Gosling) is Morris’ press secretary, the campaign’s “brains” in the form of a charming 30-year-old wunderkind whose idealism borders on naivete.

Nikita showrunner Craig Silverstein has revealed more details about the second season. The producer told IGN that fugitives Nikita (Maggie Q) and Michael (Shane West) will continue to encounter Division agents as they search for the black boxes. "They will intersect with Division because... when they go out to fix a black box or right a wrong on a black box, it sets off alerts... and Division comes running," he explained. "So they are going to cross paths with them a lot." However, Silverstein confirmed that interactions between the pair and Division agents Percy (Xander Berkeley) and Amanda (Melinda Clarke) will be limited to flashbacks for the time being. "Crossing paths with Percy and Amanda [specifically], you will see in our patented flashbacks (more)...

Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline's coverage of TCA. According to executive producer Kevin Williamson, there won’t be any guest crossover, or story crossover, between the CW’s The Vampire Diaries and the network's new series The Secret Circle, making its debut Sept. 15. Even though both series are based on supernatural book series by the same teen-appeal author, L.J. Smith, Williamson told a TCA audience today that an effort is being made to keep the shows separate. The witch mythology of Secret Circle and the vampire-werewolf-occasional witch mythology of Vampire Diaries, he said, just don’t mix. “I don’t think you’ll see that crossover,” he said. “That would kind of limit us. We want to create our own story.” And it’s not just about the mythology. Secret Circle is shot in and around Vancouver, B.C. and Williamson was asked whether it might not have been easier,...

By the time this movie arrives in theaters, audiences will have already seen the entire film via the various clips and featurettes that have been released. Here are two new videos, one featuring Blackbeard, Zombies and more Mermaids and the other showing off the international cast.
I will see this film in theaters only because I have watched all of the other films and want to see how this one turns out. I must admit this does not look too exciting to me.
Synopsis:
Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed adventure. Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penelope Cruz), he's not sure if it's love—or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the "Queen Anne's Revenge," the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds...

It looks like Disney are setting out to exploit the hotness of actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey, who plays mermaid Syrena (see what they did there?), in Rob Marshall's Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. She's got a new poster in which she's in a romance embrace with Sam Clafin playing Philip Swift.
This new one-sheet could have been drawn up for a Mills & Boon novel. I love it!
Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sails into cinemas in about three weeks time. Let's hope Rob Marshall's flick captures the spirit and brilliance of the first one and not the overloaded nonsense of Gore Verbinski's sequels.
