Following its straight-to-digital release last month, Hellboy: The Crooked Man will hit Blu-ray and DVD on December 17 via Ketchup Entertainment.
No special features are included with the reboot.
Based on the 2008 comic mini-series, Brian Taylor (Crank, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) directs from a script he co-wrote with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden.
Jack Kesy (Deadpool 2) stars as Hellboy alongside Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Leah McNamara, Joseph Marcell, Hannah Margetson, and Martin Bassindale.
Daniel Kurland wrote in his review of Hellboy: The Crooked Man, “Despite an evocative atmosphere and a rewarding embrace of folk horror, Brian Taylor’s take on the big, red paranormal detective feels creatively lost in limbo.”
In the brand new Hellboy movie, “Hellboy and rookie Bprd agent Song find themselves stranded in 1950s Appalachia, where they discover a community of witches led by a sinister evil called The Crooked Man, with mysterious ties to Hellboy’s past.

Georgian filmmaker Rusudan Glurjidze, whose anti-Putin drama “The Antique” (pictured) was nearly blocked from world premiering at the Venice Film Festival, is set to make her English-language debut with “Operation K.”
Unfolding in 1949 and 1950, the film is based on the true story of the Communist crackdown of Catholic monasteries in Czechoslovakia, resulting in mass incarcerations of thousands of monks.
Named Operation K after the Czech word for monastery (Klaster), the film charts the journey of Czech priest Josef Toufar who was tortured for defying his country’s Soviet-backed regime. Karel Roden, a veteran Czech actor whose international credits include “Orphan” and “RocknRolla,” is attached to star as Toufar.
Written by Gregory W. Jordan (“The Royal”), “Operation K” is set during the early Cold War era, as Communists were staging show trials, violently shuttering churches, and executing and imprisoning priests and nuns in then-Czechoslovakia.
Aside from “The Antique,” which is Georgia’s Oscar entry,...

“Hellboy” icon Ron Perlman recently appeared on SiriusXM’s “The Dean Obeidallah Show” ahead of Election Day (via Mediaite) to praise Kamala Harris’ campaign as “pitch perfect.” The actor has long been an outspoken critic of Donald Trump, and claimed the Republican nominee is “fucking terrified” of Harris. Perlman predicts Harris will be elected president, and “I don’t even think it’s going to be close.”
“Fucking Kamala Harris. She’s the first one that has put [Trump] in his place to the point where he’s so fucking terrified! He canceled all of his press, canceled all of his debate,” Perlman said. “He is terrified of her! Because she has his number. The parts of her campaign that I love the most is when she goes off script because you watch who she really is and how she responds in real time to questions, to things that are thrown at her.

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man has been accused of using generative AI to design its creatures. It hasn’t (but another demon film has).
Feature image: Ron Perlman as Hellboy in Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy, which emphatically didn’t use generative AI.
Update: A previous version of this article was written before the film’s director issued his clarification, in which he stated that producer Jonathan Yunger’s comments were incorrectly attributed to Hellboy: The Crooked Man.
The use of AI is perhaps the most hotly debated subject in the arts today. Only a few weeks ago, we reported that AI was used in Late Night With The Devil to create the inserts seen in the film that follows David Dastmalchian’s talk show host chatting to an actual demon. Many took to social media to condemn the film’s use of it, arguing it took jobs away from real artists.

As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

There has been a constant battle of human vs AI in art as the technology now seems to be tempting to many artists. Sure, sometimes, AI does marvel bringing out the acute wonders our minds can imagine with prompts. But how can prompts be an art form? Fans now question Millennium Films’ President’ justification as he openly admitted using AI in the new Hellboy film.

With "Avengers: Endgame" behind us and Chris Evans having retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe until further notice, we can all agree that "Captain America: The First Avenger" is the best Steve Rogers solo film, right? From its character work to its action sequences and a rousing score by the legendary Alan Silvestri, director Joe Johnston's WWII adventure is a top-tier MCU movie. While it may lack the visceral melees that the Russo Brothers brought to its sequels, "The First Avenger" delivers more than enough whiz-bang thrills and Brooklyn attitude to make up the difference (that and its politics are much less confused than those of "The Winter Soldier").
Johnston's superhero picture also boasts what is still one of the McU's most distinguished casts, pairing Evans with Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, and Dominic Cooper. Even Natalie Dormer, David Bradley,...

It’s season finale time for networks, but Netflix, naturally, still has plenty of brand new TV and shows coming in May.
Jeff Daniels makes his TV return in the David E. Kelley series “A Man in Full.” That six-episode series is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Tom Wolfe. Per a press release: “When Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker faces sudden bankruptcy, political and business interests collide as Charlie defends his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace.” The series will also star Tom Pelphrey, Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, William Jackson Harper, Aml Ameen, Sarah Jones, Jon Michael Hill and Chanté Adams.
Additionally, comedy fans can get excited for a new special series from John Mulaney. The comedian is hosting a multi-night event, “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” that looks to be part interview show and part man-on-the-street hijinks.

"Invincible" season 2 just wrapped (read our review here). While the long gap after season 1 slowed down the excitement, the second season kept the show's quality soaring higher than a Viltrumite.
"Invincible" may stream on Prime Video, but its origin story lies at Image Comics. Image was founded in 1992 as counter-programming to the Marvel/DC comics duopoly; the founders included '90s comic superstars like Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, and Jim Lee (the man who rebranded the X-Men for the '90s). The "I" on Invincible's costume? It doesn't just stand for "Invincible," but "Image" too.
At Marvel and DC, the publishers own the characters and cycle out writers/artists at the popular ones. Image, on the other hand, specializes in creator-owned comics where writers and artists retain authority. That's why "Invincible" was personally created by Robert Kirkman, author of the comics. This also means that comics published at Image...

Guillermo del Toro’s affable smile can win anyone’s heart. Not to mention, his movies as well. The Mexican filmmaker has given us a sleuth of cult classics over the years. Though not one of the most dominating personalities out there, del Toro has quietly sneaked in quite a number of remarkable works over the span of his illustrious career. With three Academy Awards and just as many Golden Globes, there can be no doubt about his impact on the industry. But things could have turned out better if he had chosen another movie over Hellboy 2.
Guillermo del Toro’s rise to fame

At the turn of the millennium, Guillermo del Toro was not the icon he is today. A director with a couple of films to his name, he was still looking to find his feet in the industry.

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” Ron Perlman kicked off the early ’90s as a monstrous character thanks to his Golden Globe-winning turn as Vincent in Beauty and the Beast. But little did he know, a visionary director named Guillermo del Toro had a different monstrous role in mind — one that would break him out of that typecast. As Perlman would reveal years later at GalaxyCon Columbus 2023, the road to becoming Hellboy was one paved with both luck and del Toro’s fierce determination. A new live-action vision of Hellboy will be coming to our screens soon, a franchise reboot called Hellboy: The Crooked Man that has been directed by Crank‘s Brian Taylor from a screenplay by Chris Golden and Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola. The film is a Millennium Media production, and since Millennium was also behind the newly released The Expendables 4 (or Expend4bles), our own Chris Bumbray was able to talk to the company’s Les Weldon, who is a producer on both Expend4bles and Hellboy: The Crooked Man. During their conversation, Weldon revealed that we should expect this new film to be the darkest, creepiest Hellboy movie yet.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man will see Hellboy and a rookie Bprd agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.

The video game Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is heading our way from developer Upstream Arcade and publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment – but it’s going to arrive two weeks later than previously expected. While an October 4th release date had been announced for the game, it has now been pushed back to October 18th. In a press release, Good Shepherd assured fans, “Developer Upstream Arcade is still hard at work ensuring that all players—longtime fans and newcomers to the Hellboy universe alike—receive the best experience possible.“
The game is a roguelite action brawler with an original story created in partnership with Dark Horse Comics and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Like the comics, the game sends Hellboy on a series of vastly different and wholly unique adventures; and while those stories stand on their own, they are all tied to the mysterious legacy of The Butterfly House. Good Shepherd Entertainment and developer Upstream Arcade have decided that Hellboy: Web of Wyrd needs a little more time before fans get their hands on the game. Originally set for release next week, the game will now see an October 18th launch.
The exact reason behind the slight delay wasn’t given, though the press release states that the development team “is still hard at work ensuring that all players – longtime fans and newcomers to the Hellboy universe alike – receive the best experience possible.”
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd places players in the shoes of Big Red himself (voiced by Lance Reddick) as he is sent across the strange realm of the Wyrd. When an agent of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) goes missing investigating the Butterfly House and psychic spikes are discovered across the globe, the world’s foremost cambion hunter of the supernatural – Hellboy – is called in.

Castlevania: Nocturne quickly finds a fast-paced, blood-soaked rhythm in this satisfying sequel to the Netflix animated horror series.
“Warriors in arms. Family in hearts.”
Castlevania: Nocturne becomes another prolonged pursuit between skilled and sullen vampire hunters and the dark creatures that go bump in the night. This basic plot may not be groundbreaking and if anything it leans into the predictable premise of each Castlevania game. That being said, the first scene–an extended cold open that runs for a third of the episode–is really the perfect distillation of why Castlevania: Nocturne is worth watching. A stunning battle between Julia Belmont and Orlox, a 250-year-old vampire, plays out while multiple forms of magic release supernatural spectacles as the two battle to the bitter end. In a single scene, Richter Belmont’s entire purpose gets crystalized and sets him–and the series–off on a strong, confident note. Castlevania: Nocturne...

Guillermo del Toro, the acclaimed director of The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Hellboy, has recently expressed his admiration for Punch-Drunk Love, a 2002 romantic comedy film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Adam Sandler. Del Toro tweeted that Punch-Drunk Love was his favorite PTA film and praised the score by Jon Brion, which he said he had been playing “in a loop” for weeks.
Punch-Drunk Love tells the story of Barry Egan, a socially awkward and emotionally unstable man who falls in love with Lena Leonard, a woman who accepts him for who he is. Barry also has to deal with a phone sex scam, a violent encounter with his sisters, and a frequent flyer miles scheme. The film is widely regarded as one of Sandler’s best performances and a departure from his usual comedic roles.

The episode of Revisited covering the 2004 version of Hellboy was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Comic book adaptations are everywhere these days, but in the early 2000s, they were a bit more of a rarity. There were some, but not a ton. 2004 saw a group of comic book adaptations come out including Immortal and Renegade and movies like Constantine, Aeon Flux, and Sin City were announced for 2005. One movie that came out in 2004 and made an impression, positioning the director, Guillermo del Toro, for much bigger things was Hellboy (watch it Here). This was his follow-up to the fantastic Blade II and, thus, not his first foray into comic book movies.

With Hellboy: The Crooked Man officially done filming, its arrival will undoubtedly be met with a mixture of skepticism and hype–based so much on the critical and commercial failure of 2019’s take. For many, the David Harbour-starring attempt was more than enough to sour the franchise; yet, how much worse could another go be? Some, however, will be completely indifferent, like Ron Perlman, who suggested the future of Hellboy is pretty far down on his list of things he should care about.
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Ron Perlman said he’s not terribly interested in any other Hellboy movies except for the ones he did with Guillermo del Toro. “What happens with the character and the franchise on the periphery of any of that is none of my business…I prefer to just dwell in the feeling that I continue to have having played him and having played him...

David Harbour has revealed that he keeps a framed photo of Hellboy in his closet, offering him a chance to “remember where [he] came from.”
In a recent video for Architectural Digest, David Harbour took viewers on a tour of the Brooklyn apartment he shares with his wife, Lily Allen, who he married in 2020. When they get to David Harbour’s nearly all-black closet–admittedly smaller than Allen’s–he reaches past a couple hats and tells viewers, “Just whenever I’m feeling particularly good about myself…I like to always remember where I came from.” Harbour then pulls out a small framed photo of himself as Hellboy, who he played in the 2019 reboot. Allen can be seen laughing in the background, also apparently quite aware of how awful Hellboy is.

"Ready to have some fun?" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for the next horror comedy from writer / director Christopher Landon, best known as the creator of Happy Death Day and Freaky. His latest is titled We Have a Ghost, launching on Netflix this February. Finding a ghost named Ernest haunting their new home turns Kevin's family into overnight social media sensations. But when Kevin and Ernest go rogue to investigate the mystery of Ernest's past, they become a target of the CIA. The best part about this is that David Harbour stars as the titular ghost, Ernest, based on a short story by Geoff Manaugh. The cast also includes Jahi Winston, Tig Notaro, Erica Ash, Jennifer Coolidge, and Anthony Mackie, plus Faith Ford, Niles Fitch, Isabella Russo, and Steve Coulter. This does look funny! Landon keeps delivering with his funky fresh horror comedy ideas. I'm in. ›››

Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy" is indicative of where the filmmaker was at in his career when he made it. Released in 2004, it was the first movie del Toro directed after the financial success of "Blade II" in 2002 but only his third Hollywood project after that film and his 1997 box office flop "Mimic." Because of this, he had yet to gain the creative control he would later come to wield the first time he brought the agents of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense to the big screen.
Perhaps that's why "Hellboy" doesn't feel like an undiluted del Toro joint in the vein of its sequel, 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." Make no mistake, it's an imaginative, director-driven superhero movie, mixing quirky horror with del Toro's soulful monsters and fun nods to the fantasy films of Ray Harryhausen. But at the same time, del Toro's weirdness seems buttoned down.

Two decades after making his debut with werewolf war movie “Dog Soldiers,” Neil Marshall offers another spin on military-vs.-monsters action in “The Lair,” a semi-return to form that’s energetic if uninspired and increasingly silly. Nonetheless, it represents a bit of a rebound after the disasters of last year’s “The Reckoning” and an unhappy “Hellboy” reboot he disowned. This first issue from Scarlett Prods., the company he founded with star, co-writer and executive producer Charlotte Kirk, gets released by Rlje Films to limited U.S. theaters as well as VOD and digital Oct. 28. Launch on multi-territory genre streaming platform Shudder is planned for early next year.

Religious horror is more than an exploration of the stranger corners of Catholic theology. Folk horror, with its old-world pagan trappings, has a place in the genre, and the occasional Gnostic lore sneaks into the corners as well, but Christian-themed horror prevails on American turf, built from all the familiar icons the country's Puritan ancestors railed against. Intricate rituals that feel like sacred magic gone wrong. Demons lurk around every corner, waiting to claim your soul.
Creature scares and the Roman ritual of exorcism aside, religious horror (when it works) is a comfort food against the too-real evils of the world. All the bad things that happen to us are not our fault. They're tests, trials, or even just the cruel machinations of the Devil Itself. For those of us with no personal connection to theologies, these films can be a roaring good time through a world we rarely deal with.

The nameless amphibian-man (Doug Jones) may be the most recognizable part of "The Shape of Water," but it's his human lover Elisa (Sally Hawkins) who's the movie's protagonist. Hawkins' performance is stirring. Since Elisa is mute, Hawkins never says a word (barring an imagined musical number). She instead lets her actions and expressions speak for her, resulting in a performance even more emotive than if Elisa spoke dialogue aloud.
Director Guillermo del Toro knew ahead of time that Hawkins could deliver the performance he wanted; he's been a fan of hers since the 2005 BBC miniseries, "Fingersmith." In an interview with Gold Derby, the director recounted:
"[Hawkins' character] fell in love with another woman and they had a beautiful affair and I thought the way she did it was so natural, there was no wink-wink, no titillation. So I wrote it for her, speechless, mute, because to me, love renders you speechless."

Guillermo del Toro sat at a crossroads in 2005. The heat was still palpable from the pair of Hollywood tentpole films he made, "Blade II" and "Hellboy." The University of Guadalajara alum had gotten offers to stay on the superhero path, working with big studio properties, or he could embark on an intensely personal project with less money, but fewer creative restrictions.
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of "Pan's Labyrinth," the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures hosted Del Toro, actor Doug Jones, and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro for a screening and Q&a. There, the "Cronos" director looked back on his 2006...

Master of twisted fairytales Guillermo del Toro is thankful that “Pan’s Labyrinth” received its own happily-ever-after ending after a tumultuous production.
For the Oscar-winning film’s 15th anniversary, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures hosted del Toro, actor Doug Jones, and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro in a roundtable interview to discuss the making of “Pan’s Labyrinth.”
“After ‘Hellboy’ and ‘Blade II’ were successful, I got offered every superhero movie — they were starting to pick up,” del Toro said, via The Hollywood Reporter. “I was thinking about it because it was very tempting and I said, ‘Do I do ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ or do I do a big movie?'”
Del Toro continued, “I like going from big movies to smaller movies. I like it because it keeps you honest, and it keeps you scared. Both things are very important. But everything that could go wrong on ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ went wrong.”

It’s good to speak with the central creative forces behind a film you enjoyed — for instance, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, which I’d count as his best film since Hellboy II and generally one of his most well-rounded achievements. Less ideal is when I speak to them before I’ve seen it at all — for instance, when I sat down with cinematographer Dan Laustsen at this year’s Camerimage International Film Festival.
Laustsen is, as the film itself will show, a great practitioner of his craft and, to boot, rather friendly, and the working process on a project of this scale is always going to interest me, nuts-and-bolts-wise, so the result is, to my mind, still a proper overview of what went into the Cold War fantasy romance.
The Film Stage: So here’s a funny thing: the film screens on Saturday, which means I haven’t seen it.

Just like every other Hellboy enthusiast, I'm damn curious about Neil Marshall's forthcoming film featuring the big, red pancake-loving galoot. I used to be of the mind that no one could hope to recreate the chemistry shared between director Guillermo del Toro and actor Ron Perlman, when "Big Red" made his theatrical debut in 2004. However, with every image or bit of information that... Read More...
