The film was originally to be the first in a trilogy, but after its disappointing box-office performance the idea was cancelled.
The crew searches for the planet Odin, and battles the cosmic entity Asgard. These names have been exchanged: in Norse mythology, Odin was a divine being and Asgard was the home of the gods. The role of Asgard in this film as a gatekeeper is usually attributed to Heimdall in mythology.
This movie was released in America by U.S. Manga Corps in both an uncut subtitled format, and a English-dubbed format (seen on IMDb as Odin: Photon Space Sailor Starlight (1986) (V)). The original uncut version runs 135 minutes, but the English dub, which was edited for length purposes, runs only 90 minutes. This film thus has the distinction of perhaps being the anime movie which suffered the harshest editing for length in its English release.
The film is widely criticized by both critics and mainstream fans as being a transparent copy of Yoshinobu Nishizaki's more successful series Space Battleship Yamato (1974) (the crew of a starship go in search of a world).
