Following the fall of France, a British Agent sends a message that four German spies are going to be landed, via U-Boat, off the South Coast. Pinto refuses to allow the four men to claim they are soldiers rather than spies.
Spring 1941; Pinto is assigned to meet De Nay from the Dutch resistance, arriving from Lisbon. On the same plane is a Miss Dijkstra, who arrives with a member the aristocracy and insists she goes straight through but Pinto is unconvinced.
October 1942; Pinto is on alert to interview Gabriel, the head of one of the most successful escape groups in Holland. Gabriel believes the Germans have infiltrated the group and suspects it's either Van Loeven or his son Jan.
October 1944; At Eindhoven, Pinto is on the look out for refugees to be screened. Cornelius Verloop is flagged up by the Dutch Resistance as a collaborator. They believe that having been once part of the group he defected to the Germans.
December 1944; Pinto returns to Belgium after an illness. The first person he investigates is Dutchman Dirk Koopman who was a member of the SS and won the Iron Cross. He claims he was an infiltrator working for the resistance.
Autumn 1944; Dutch volunteers are finding their way through to the Allied lines. Known as 'Line Runners' they needed to be vetted. When, two men from Utrecht, have forged money on them Pinto is suspicious.
May 1945; Stationed at the Hotel Orange, Pinto receives a letter naming a Dutch woman called Sanders as a collaborator. Her husband Ernst was hero of the resistance who she has just nursed back to health after imprisonment.
