Amy HeckerlingThe films of Amy Heckerling reveal a heart guarded and tender, a penchant for the past without a whiff of the maudlin. Who could forget her debut, Fast Times at Ridgemont High? Directed from Cameron Crowe's script, the 1982 film gave us frank portrayals of sexuality and the detailed minutiae of growing up, suspended in the hazy tedium of high school, all without condescension or patronizing. Totally righteous. Heckerling proved attuned to the particulars of comedy with her next feature Johnny Dangerously (1984), a waggish send-up of the 1930s gangster comedy. In its cheeky beginning, a 1935 title card reveals itself to be a real material object that crumbles when car crash obliterates its façade. With a darkened lash line, a young Michael Keaton puts forth his best James Cagney as the titular mobster whose identity and status are known to all but his ailing ma and brother, a rising assistant Da.

In a single, extraordinary day more than $2 million in donations was pledged to seven Australian feature-length documentaries on Wednesday.

The scale of the financial support stunned the organisers of the first Good Pitch Australia event, which aids social impact documentaries.

Equally surprised were the recipients. .I am speechless,. said producer Marguerite Grey, who is collaborating with director Belinda Mason on Constance on the Edge, which looks at the struggles of a Sudanese refugee, Constance Okot, and her six children in Wagga Wagga.

The docu was the biggest single recipient with pledges of more than $500,000 for the production and an initial outreach strategy which includes hosted regional film screenings and education and training resources.

Screen Australia provided $15,000 for research and development in March and in September Screen Nsw gave $10,000 for filming a trailer for Good Pitch and for broadcasters to help secure project finance.

Paul Feig is nothing if not open. As the author of two wonderfully observed memoirs - "Kick Me," covering his childhood and "Superstud" chronicling his twenties, with his TV series "Freaks and Geeks" to semi-autobiographically fill in the rest of his early years -- he's let audiences grow up with him. With sharp, self-deprecating wit and warmth, he's been the best teller of his own story, one that's led him from an adolescence in Michigan where a respite from constant teasing in junior high was making TV commercials for his father's hardware store before he eventually took center stage himself to the slings and arrows of being a standup comedian and actor. However, partly out of his considerable humility and just as likely because it would ruin some of his schtick, the one area of his life that hasn't been as nearly well-documented has been the success he's found as a director.

“Classical Week” came to Dancing With the Stars on Monday night, with an expanded (and pretty awesome) 46-piece orchestra, some first-rate choreography (without the assistance of beats or lyrics), and guest turns by violinist David Garrett, soprano Katherine Jenkins, and Cinderella, who had a very public and memorable shoe malfunction smack in the middle of her routine.
