The first of two animated television series featuring Heathcliff, George Gately's newspaper comic strip cat. The first series was produced by Ruby-Spears Productions, while the second series, Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats (1984), was produced by DIC Entertainment. Mel Blanc provided the voice of Heathcliff in both series.
In the first season of the show, Heathcliff cartoons were paired with "Dingbat and the Creeps," a series featuring a trio of wacky monsters, including Dingbat (a vampire dog), Spare Rib (a skeleton), and Mr. Nobody (a jack-o-lantern). In the second season, Heathcliff cartoons were paired with cartoons featuring Marmaduke, a clumsy Great Dane, based on the newspaper comic strip by Brad Anderson.
The series was reran on NBC in 1983 as part of Thundarr the Barbarian (1980), until 1984, when it left the airwaves.
It was originally aired as part of a 90-minute block, pairing with Plastic Man (1979) and Thundarr the Barbarian (1980). The. It became part of a hour-long block with Super Friends (1973) until it became a standalone half-hour show in the winter of 1982.
