After his wife leaves him for another woman, Luke Wakefield becomes a miserable, alcoholic recluse. One day he discovers a letter in which a man who's just died appears to confess to having murdered his wife. Luke becomes obsessed with finding justice for the murdered woman. His psychological instability grows as he invents weirder and more outrageous strategies for infiltrating the husband's social circle and finding out the truth about the woman's death.
