"Tonto Pillo" is, along "El Gran Circo Chamorro", my favorite chilean film ever made. "Tonto Pillo" means in spanish "Clever fool", and is about the typical chilean huaso (a man from the country) who is at the same time, very clever and very naive. Lucho Cordova is Chepo Matamala, aka Tonto Pillo, the eldest of the seven Matamala brothers. Since their father and mother are both dead, Chepo must be, at the same time, a very strict father and mother to all his six brothers, which brings very funny situations and dialogues.
"Tonto Pillo" is a movie that describes in a precise way the chilean idiosyncrasy of the 40s, both in city and country. Lucho Cordova's gags are among the funniest in cinema history. For instance, when Chepo lost all his money and wanders through Santiago streets, he finds a man who is buying worn clothes: "-I buy worn clothes... -Do you want me to going naked?" A must-see movie!
