Produced by Alberto Cavalcanti who gained many expertise in France and England before be hired by Vera Cruz as producer, upon his command he asking for the writer Abilio Pereira de Almeida to adapt and developing his own successful stage play Paiol Velho to big screen, whereby he also will act as well, John Payne got the direction, a bold project to a beginner Brazilian studio, that was an instant success on box-office.
This dramatic offering is about an old farmer called Paiol Velho (Old Bar) which since the old owner went do die has been managed by his protector Tonico (Abilio) meanwhile his young son João Carlos (Mario Sergio) living in a flamboyant life in São Paulo, hard-pressed by his mother to take over the Paiol Velho in decaying financial situation, due the foreman Tonico has been diverted the profits to himself, grudgingly João Carlos arrives there, soon he enters in gambling again, worst get involved with Tonico's wife Lina (Marisa Prado).

This fabulous picture also approaches some interesting everyday facts on rural environment, as June festivals, the clash between the poor employers over the foreman, the female role at its time and the former slavery black people underpinned on Ruth de Souza's character, also the strong religious influence, furthermore Abilio Pereira de Almeida unfortunately didn't earned enough status from the mainstream media, so he died deeply butthurt.
