Jim Davis' Father Liked 1 Famous Comic Strip More Than Garfield (& Davis Kept It Secret for Decades)
Jim Davis' Garfield is perhaps the most successful comic strip ever created, read all over the world, to the extent that it has the Guinness World Record for the most syndicated strip. It's therefore surprising to learn that while Davis' father liked his son's creation, there was a contemporary comic that he loved just that little bit more. This fact is made all the more interesting due to the fact that Davis was friends with his 'rival' creator, who ended up shaping Garfield by prompting Davis to rename a major character.
Davis kept it quiet that his father preferred a rival comic, admitting in 2014 that "Nobody else knew that until today."

Mort Walker's Beetle Bailey strips were known for regularly breaking the fourth wall, adding another layer of humor to its slice-of-life jokes about being a private in the army. Beetle Bailey's longevity as a syndicated comic strip was due, in large part, to Walker's clever techniques, which included a quirky sense of humor than went beyond the simple premise of his cartoon. Beetle Bailey was not afraid to poke fun at itself, often referencing its place in comic strip history with witty self-awareness.
Beetle Bailey is an iconic comic strip that shows a silly look at military life for the eccentric group of recruits and authority figures at a fictional Army post. While many of the strips are pretty straightforward, some hilariously break the fourth wall, gaining laughs and insights into the fictional world of a comic strip.

Despite its seemingly simple, straightforward nature, longrunning American comic strip Beetle Bailey delivered daily doses of anti-authority humor to readers for decades, encouraging them to question authority. Mort Walker's subtle humor in Beetle Bailey undermined hierarchy, using the strip's military setting to lampoon authority, which according to Walker, reflected core American values. The Beetle Bailey comic strip, which is still running, has provided insightful social commentary on the nature of American citizens' relationship with authority since the earliest years of the Cold War, making it an amazing cultural artifact, which will continue to be studied in the future.
For nearly seventy-five years, Beetle Bailey has gently lampooned the U.S. military – though according to creator Mort Walker, the seemingly innocuous, simple comic strip is undergirded by insightful commentary on the nature of the relationship between American citizens and authority. According to Walker, his central character follows the "general rule...
