Sara Lane, who portrayed the orphaned frontier girl Elizabeth Grainger for four seasons of the NBC drama The Virginian, has died. She was 73.
Lane died Friday at her home in Napa, California, after a six-year battle with breast cancer, her husband, Jon Scott, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Lane joined the 1890s Western for the start of its retooled fifth season in September 1966 alongside two other new castmembers: Charles Bickford, who played her grandfather, John Grainger, the new owner of the Shiloh Ranch, and Don Quine, who portrayed her older brother, Stacey Grainger.
She appeared on 105 episodes of the Wyoming Territory-set series through March 1970, with James Drury‘s title character and Doug McClure’s Trampas looking after Elizabeth. The Virginian aired one final season without her.

Kino’s triple-threat Edgar Ulmer show has great commentaries plus HD debuts of his two ‘Texas’ movies, that likely have not been seen in their original widescreen aspect ratios since the 1960s. Ulmer’s first tale of a solo space invader has the pleasing look of a silent-era expressionist film. His take on a time travel paradox uses Air Force cooperation to project pilot Robert Clarke from 1959 to the far far future date of 2024 (ulp!). And Ulmer’s cut-rate invisible man is a master thief sprung from the pokey to help with a mad scheme to conquer the world — but the crook instead rushes to rob a bank! The excellent presentations will have special appeal for connoisseurs of exotic sci-fi thrillers.

This is a good week to be a horror fan who collects home media, because we have some killer releases headed our way on Tuesday. Personally, I’ve been waiting ever so patiently for Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition release of Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon, and my patience is finally going to pay off tomorrow, as not only are we getting a 4K scan of the film, but the Blu is also chock-full of special features I cannot wait to dig into. Scream Factory is also giving Julia Ducournau’s Raw a stateside Blu-ray release finally, and Arrow Video is showing some love to Patrick Picard’s The Bloodhound this week as well.
We also have two Steelbooks that will be available this Tuesday: Gattaca in 4K as well as the 40th anniversary release of Friday the 13th Part II, and if you need to play catch-up,...

Hello again, everyone! We only have a few titles on the docket for this week’s home media releases, but there’s still some fun stuff to keep an eye out for, especially if you're a fan of classic genre films. Mondo Macabro is keeping busy with several Blu-ray releases, including Panic Beats, Blood Ceremony, and Queens of Evil, Code Red is showing some love to an often overlooked ’80s slasher—The Forest—and Bless the Child is getting re-released on DVD for the first time in decades, too. Also being released on March 9th is Rent-a-Pal from Scream Factory.
Blood Ceremony
In 19th century Europe, the people are in the grip of ancient superstitions and the fear of vampires runs riot through the land. Strange rituals are enacted to seek out the resting places of the undead and macabre trials are held over disinterred corpses. The Countess barely notices what is going on.

Dante Vescio and Rodrigo Gasparini, the directing duo behind Brazilian horror flick O Diabo Mora Aqui and other short films, took a time out from horror to direct a short science fiction film and enter it into Nasa's CineSpace short film competition. Together with their regular writer Rafael Baliú they made Children of the Cosmos. The short reflects on the wonders of the Universe and the cosmos, with a surprise ending. You just have to watch for yourself. The Cosmos. Mankind. The meaning of Life. Come play with us. You couldn’t blame hotel guests who end up on the same floor as Martin Hughes and his two 4-year-old daughters, Poppy and Isabella, for shrieking in the hallway.
Since his girls have always insisted on dressing alike, Hughes, 46, a web designer from Cheshire, England, recently decided to take their lookalike status to a new level, convincing them to pose like the twins from his favorite horror movie, The Shining, during a stay at a London hotel.

I know that I’ve gone on record with saying that Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas has to be one of the best film festivals our country has to offer. Sadly, there is not enough time to catch all the films I wanted to see. One film was called Men & Chicken which starred Mads Mikkelsen. It was a comedy and that meant that it went down the priority pole when it came to covering the festival for a “horror-centric” website like Destroy the Brain. However, our contributor, Mike Hassler, saw it and told me that while he thought the movie was okay, the short that was before it seemed to steal the show. The short film that preceded Men & Chicken was something called The Chickening. Mike couldn’t explain what it was nor did I think he want to. He thought that I would get maximum enjoyment seeing the short...

Do the films that scared us in our youth, from Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Blair Witch Project - still get under the skin?
Spoilers for each of the movies mentioned in the assorted subheads lie within
Are scary movies as scary as they used to be? Did the movies that scared you as a child still scare you when you watched them as an adult?
As a very young child, my fear-reflex was helped along by my older cousins, who used to lock me in a room with films like The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist playing through a too-high-to-reach television. It was like being trapped in a PG version of Saw: “Want to play a game? Find a way to reach the VHS player and stop the Poltergeist tape before the clown pops out from under the bed, or be left with life-long phobias and mental instability.
