Influential sketch show spun off from a long running Scottish radio show. It introduced the world to Glaswegian street philosopher Rab C. Nesbitt and The Baldy Man. Harry Enfield, Steve Coogan and Rik Mayall all wrote for the show.

Naked Video in my mind followed in the tradition of Not the Nine O&#39;Clock News and A Kick Up The Eighties. It was made up of mainly a Scots cast with the exception of Helen Lederer. Helen Lederer mainly did this piece where she would talk about her characters life and what had happened in it the previous week. There used to be a Welsh guy in this slot and I&#39;m fairly sure the two of them were never in the same show. Gregor Fisher and Andy Gray seemed to be the main comedians in this show, but all the other cast made it the great show it was. Gregor had some fantastic characters like the guy from Outer Hebridies Broadcasting Corp, the guy with the comb over hair and also I&#39;m sure this was the birthplace of Rab C Nesbitt. Andy Grey will always be remembered mainly as Chancer from City Lights but he has a classic character in this show as a poser who seemed to be from Miami Vice. The show was broadcast on BBC2 and lasted a couple of series. Naked Video is sometimes repeated on cable &amp; satellite and you&#39;ll find that some of the modern sketch shows have borrowed a bit but have n&#39;t managed to convey the sheer funniness of the original.

&#39;A Kick Up The Eighties&#39; and &#39;Laugh? I Nearly Paid My Licence Fee!&#39; laid the groundwork for this classic sketch show which, despite spawning two spin-offs - &#39;Rab C.Nesbitt&#39; and &#39;The Baldy Man&#39; - strangely seems to have fallen off the radar. The early editions opened with Andy Gray and Helen Lederer reading spoof news items similar to those of &#39;Not The Nine O&#39;Clock News&#39;. Lederer herself wrote and performed monologues in which she played a tipsy bimbo. My favourite recurring character though was Siadwel, a geeky Welsh poet played to perfection by John Sparkes. In filthy anorak and N.H.S. spectacles, Siadwel regaled us with such stunning observations on life as: &quot;Uncle Pob wouldn&#39;t put his dog in the kennels before going on holiday. He said it was cruel. So he drowned him.&quot;. Sparkes eventually left to appear in Channel 4&#39;s &#39;Absolutely&#39;. Later programmes had Gregor Fisher as Gus, the boisterous newsreader of the Outer Hebrides Broadcasting Corporation ( O.H.B.C. ). Some of the humour could be sick, such as the man accidentally decapitating commuters with a hedge trimmer. One particularly brilliant sketch featured the cast as &#39;The Broons&#39;, a comic-strip Scottish family well known to readers of &#39;The Sunday Post&#39;. Each show closed with Thatcher roaring like the M.G.M. lion. This was later changed to John Major issuing a mouse-like squeak! Special mention should be made of David McNiven and his wonderful songs. &#39;Naked Video&#39; was, for my money, one of the best sketch shows the B.B.C. has ever made.

&#39;Naked Video&#39; is possibly one of the best comedy sketch shows I have come to see, bringing stitches to my sides as I find myself laughing at the majority of the scenes. I had never really heard of &#39;Naked Video&#39; until a friend introduced me to it via YouTube. There&#39;s not a lot I can really say about this show that has not already been said before, but I can confirm most of the positive review with my own interpretation. During each episode, there are a number of recurring characters that you come to look forward to seeing each and every time. In fact, one of the most well-known characters was &#39;Rab C Nesbitt&#39;, an alcoholic Glaswegian stereotype, played famously by &#39;Gregor Fisher&#39;, who later went on to have his own spin-off series, simply titled &#39;Rab C Nesbitt&#39;. Aside from that, some of my favourite characters had to be Welsh poet &#39;Siadwell&#39;, done amazingly well by &#39;John Sparkes&#39;. &#39;The Baldy Man&#39; was also a favourite of mine, again played by &#39;Gregor Fisher&#39;. In this role, he was vain, silly and was obsessed with his few strands of hair that he had as a comb-over a-top his head. This character also went on to have an unfortunately, unsuccessful spin-off series. (Though I must admit to liking it myself.) And despite my usual dislike of actress &#39;Helen Lederer&#39;, I must admit to finding myself mildly intrigued whenever she came on screen as a semi-drunk propping up a wine bar, monologuing her life. Occasionally she would come out with something amusing. Other actors and actresses that appeared in the programme, were &#39;Elaine C Smith&#39;, &#39;Andy Gray&#39; and &#39;Tony Roper&#39;. With both excellent performances and catchy theme music, this show was bound to be a huge hit. And true enough, it was, running a total of five seasons. Three of these are already on DVD, but the last two have not been released, much to the bitter disappointment of its many fans.

&#39;Naked Video&#39; is in my opinion the finest sketch show ever to appear on British television. It began life in 1980 as BBC Radio 4 production entitled &#39;Naked Radio&#39; and proved to be very popular among listeners. In 1985, the cast performed the show live at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where its producer Colin Gilbert realised that it had the potential to transfer over to visual media. In 1986, the show successfully transferred over to television and became &#39;Naked Video&#39;. The cast from the radio version - Gregor Fisher, Andy Gray, Tony Roper, the late Ron Bain ( series 1 and 2 ), Elaine C. Smith, Jonathan Watson, Kate Donnelly ( series 4 ) and Louise Beattie ( series 5 ) - were retained, however to make the show more accessible to a national audience, two non-Scottish performers - Helen Lederer and John Sparkes ( series 1 - 3 ) - were brought in to complement the cast. The sketches were for the most part traditional in tone though sometimes could lean more towards bad taste, such as one featuring a man going down a flume at a swimming pool, only then to emerge from a sewage outlet pipe or one featuring a drunk piper in attendance at a Robert Burns tribute dinner vomiting into a set of bagpipes, however they were often wonderfully written and were well performed by a strong cast. Some items tackled issues of the day such as one where a man asked his friend why he changed his dog&#39;s name from Rex to Nirex: &#39;&#39;because I&#39;ve trained him to bury his s**t in other people&#39;s gardens!&#39;&#39;. Spoofs were also commonly in use, one such example being of the BBC1 soap &#39;Eastenders&#39; or, most memorably, one featuring the cast as Scottish comic strip family &#39;The Broons&#39; ( who to this day still appear regularly in &#39;The Sunday Post&#39; ). Regular scriptwriters included Niall Clark, Bob Black, Colin Gilbert ( under the alias Tex Winchester ), Ian Pattison, Laurie Rowley, Terry Ravenscroft and Philip Differ ( under the pen name Wes Fargo ). The first two series would open with Helen Lederer and Andy Gray as newsreaders ( not unlike the ones seen in &#39;Not The Nine O&#39;Clock News&#39; ) however they were later replaced in series three by Gregor Fisher as Gus, an eccentric news anchor for the Outer Hebrides Broadcasting Corporation. Recurring stand out characters included Siadwel, a gormless Welsh poet, created and played by John Sparkes who would recite poems from his bedroom about the events in his life, then there was Bernard &amp; Miriam ( played by Gregor Fisher and Helen Lederer ), a prudish middle aged couple who are in a dead end relationship with each other ( there was serious consideration of building a sitcom around the two ), Mr. Cool, played by Andy Gray, was a tastelessly dressed narcissist who would stop at nothing to impress the girls while Helen Lederer wrote ( in collaboration with Ian Pattison ) and performed monologues as a yuppie type who would bemoan from a wine bar the events of her diabolical love life. However, the two most popular characters, both played by Gregor Fisher, were &#39;The Baldy Man&#39;, a vain half wit whose unconvincing comb over endured many a misfortune ( he proved so popular that the famous &#39;photo booth&#39; sketch performed here was later used as a commercial for Hamlet Cigars, as well as having a sitcom later being built around the character ) and the permanently intoxicated Glaswegian street philosopher &#39;Rab C. Nesbitt&#39; ( created by Ian Pattison ), who, of course, later was spun off into his own sitcom which became a huge hit for BBC Scotland. Most episodes also featured funny songs written ( and sometimes performed ) by the show&#39;s musical composer, the late David McNiven. Each episode closed with a parody of the M. G. M lion ident which had Margaret Thatcher roaring like said animal, however this was changed in the final series to John Major squeaking like a mouse! Some items may not stand up as well now as they did back in the day, either because they are now out of date or simply just too non PC for modern audiences. Well, I&#39;m not ashamed to say I still love the show and will never tire of watching it!
