Despite the negative reception, Mara Wilson states that she does not regret making the film. In an interview with "The Nostalgia Critic" Wilson stated that making the film was "one of the funniest times" in her life. She also stated in another interview with PBS News Hour in 2016 that, next to Matilda (1996), this was her favourite film to make out of her whole career.
Lady was the only one of the Sodor engines to be constructed full size. Thomas and the others were models, with the actors digitally composed next to them using Chroma Key.
Currently, this is the only Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends film to feature live actors.
In the original script, Lily, 20 years later, was the narrator.
There are over 300 special effects shots in the film.
