Pitched somewhere between science-fiction and fable, director Gabriel Mascaro’s “The Blue Trail” finds a beacon of optimism within its own dystopian view of the future. Set in the director’s native Brazil — and showcasing the astonishing natural beauty (side by side with decay) of the Amazon in every high-definition frame — the film centers a 77-year-old woman, Tereza (Denise Weinberg), in a society that has deemed anyone above the age of 75 an impediment to its economic success. Mascaro sees her differently, and so will we by the end of what unexpectedly turns out to be the greatest South American houseboat movie since “Fitzcarraldo.”
The “Neon Bull” director has always had an incredible visual sense, though his plots tend to lack focus. Not this one. Judging by its concept alone, “The Blue Trail” could technically be classified alongside “Children of Men” on video store shelves. And yet, in both genre and tone,...

When the first "Harry Potter" film released in 2001, director Chris Columbus, then best known for "Home Alone," introduced the word to Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger and placed them in the wizarding world beloved by fans of the book series. So why did Columbus direct the first movie, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (or "Philosopher's Stone" if you're outside of the United States), follow it up with "Chamber of Secrets," and then leave the franchise as a director? Put simply, the guy was really tired.
In a retrospective with The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 celebrating 20 years of the "Harry Potter" film franchise, Columbus explained that both "Sorcerer's Stone" and "Chamber of Secrets" had incredibly arduous shooting schedules. "'Sorcerer's Stone' took 160 days of shooting, which is ridiculously long," Columbus recalled. "And then, immediately after we stopped shooting, we started shooting 'Chamber of Secrets,...

Spectacular and breathtaking, Birdman is an exhibition of magic realism.
Michael Keaton stars as an aging Riggan Thomson, once famous for playing a superhero called Birdman, a superhero franchise which had its last film in 1992, [which interestingly is also the year Michael Keaton’s 2nd Batman film released] and is now desperately looking for a comeback by appearing in a Broadway play.
Twenty-two years after Tim Burton made his last Batman film with Michael Keaton, who would have thought that the near-extinct Keaton would resurface in such a hauntingly beautiful fashion and deliver the most outstanding performance of his career? Michael Keaton was arguably the most deserving candidate for last year’s Academy Award for Best Actor. However, he lost to a brilliant performance by Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything.
Birdman is so similar to Keaton’s life in films that I wonder if director Alejandro González Iñárritu wanted to cast a washed-up superhero actor to play the...

It’s the year 2073, and the worst fears of modern life have been realised. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies and militarised police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence.
As a fan of both speculative fiction and thought-provoking documentaries, I was intrigued by 2073, the latest film from Asif Kapadia, best known for Senna and Amy. The film blends dystopian fiction with documentary elements, creating a chilling, hybrid vision of our near future.
Samantha Morton delivers a haunting performance as a mute survivor navigating a post-apocalyptic world. Her silence speaks volumes, forcing the audience to absorb the devastation around her. Interwoven with her journey are real-world interviews and archival footage tackling pressing global crises—climate change, authoritarianism, and technological overreach. The result...

Engines are being warmed up on “One,” the drama series set in the world of Formula One racing that Felicity Jones is attached to both star in and executive produce.
Variety understands that the series is in development with Amazon MGM Studios for Prime Video, although it has not been officially ordered yet.
“One” — which marks Formula 1’s first officially sanctioned scripted series — will focus on a failing family-owned racing team, led by Jones’ character, as it contends with fierce personalities, ever-changing rivals and multi-million-dollar stakes.
The series is produced by Bedrock Entertainment, launched in 2020 as a joint venture between “Band of Brothers” producer Tony To, “True Detective” executive producer Dan Sackheim and ITV Studios America. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby — who were Oscar nominated for “Children of Men” — will write and executive produce.
To will executive produce “One” for Bedrock, alongside Sackheim and ITV Studios America’s president and managing director Philippe Maigret.

Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón turned down an offer to make a James Bond movie. “I was troubled about the idea of doing it,” he said.
Who will direct the next James Bond movie? Who will star in the next James Bond movie? At the time of writing, those remain open questions. One filmmaker we can probably mark as out of the running, though, is Children Of Men and Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón.
The filmmaker has revealed that he was once “offered a Bond film” but ultimately turned it down – partly because the thought of making it made him feel uneasy, and partly because he had a pivotal dinner conversation with fellow director Joel Coen.

Alfonso Cuarón had the audience of the Marrakech Film Festival in stitches during a wide-ranging conversation in which he revealed that he had never read a Harry Potter book before shooting “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” He also recalled turning down an offer to shoot a James Bond movie after having dinner with filmmaker Joel Coen.
Asked by Moroccan directors Alaa Eddine Aljem and Talal Selhami how he managed to put his personal stamp on the third “Harry Potter” film which, the moderators noted, is considered by many fans the best installment in the franchise, Cuarón replied that he basically had to pay the bills.
“I had written ‘Children of Men’ that nobody wanted to do. I was unemployed. I was going to have a child,” Cuarón explained. “This film was offered to me, and I didn’t want to do it because I didn’t know anything about Harry Potter.

Infrequent as they are, a new film from Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron is always worth the wait. Let’s take a look back at all eight of Cuaron’s movies, ranked worst to best.
Born in Mexico City in 1961, Cuaron made his directorial debut when he was just 30-years-old with the Spanish-language farce “Solo con Tu Pareja” (1991). He was soon drafted by Hollywood to helm the children’s film “A Little Princess” (1995) and the modern day Charles Dickens adaptation “Great Expectations” (1998).
It was with “Y Tu Mama Tambien” (2001), a sexy road trip comedy shot in Mexico, that Cuaron reaped his first Oscar nomination in Best Original Screenplay. He returned to America shortly thereafter to direct the third installment in the “Harry Potter” franchise, “The Prisoner of Azkaban” (2004).

Wild Bunch has acquired the project for Germany and Italy. Deals have also been struck for Spain (YouPlanet), Eastern Europe (Monolith/Blitz), Middle East (Falcon Films), Greece (Spentzos), Israel (Red Cape Distribution), Portugal (Pris Audiovisuiais), and Cis (Mgn/Paradise).
Kristallnacht translates as Night of Broken Glass, a reference to the thousands of shops, businesses and synagogues destroyed by the Nazis across the two nights in November 1938.
Set on the brink of World War II in Berlin, the true story unfolds in a city turned into a powder keg after the assassination of a German attaché in Paris, which is wrongfully branded a “Jewish terrorist attack” by Nazi propaganda.

From the early stages of film history, two broadly contrasting factions of filmmakers can be identified based on their approach to film aesthetics. The first group, which placed their faith in montage, can be classified as formalists, while the second group, which emphasized a more realistic representation of the world, can be classified as realists. Early film theorists sought to establish cinema as a legitimate art form by emphasizing its capacity to deviate from the real world. They argued that cinema had the right to diverge from reality in order to distinguish itself as an art form that evokes a subjective sense of the real.
Early filmmakers like Georges Méliès can be seen as one of the proponents of this notion, as their films delve into fantasy worlds that have little in common with the real world, often structured in an episodic manner, with separate images stitched together through editing.

Netflix has unveiled its upcoming International slate this morning, which includes Revelations, a new thriller from Train to Busan filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho. First-look images introduce the thriller and its central characters.
Revelations will debut on Netflix in 2025.
The crime thriller with a supernatural twist follows “a pastor and a detective, each driven by their own beliefs. The pastor believes it’s his divine calling to punish the culprit behind a missing-person case, while the detective assigned to the case continues to be haunted by visions of her dead sister.”
Ryu Jun-yeol and Shin Hyeon-bin star.
Netflix previously gave a bit more insight into the characters, “Ryu Jun-yeol portrays Min-chan, a pastor who runs a church in a small provincial town with a mission for church planting. When a man named Yang-rae visits his church, Min-chan receives a divine revelation identifying him as the culprit who abducted his son, and he sets forth to pursue justice.

Nobody does it quite like M. Night Shyamalan. The man has been making original movies for most of his career, save for the occasional adaptation like "The Last Airbender". It's rare, particularly in the modern era, but Shyamalan has built up enough cache with audiences to do that, dating back to his breakout smash hit "The Sixth Sense" in 1999. In the aftermath of that success, Shyamalan pretty much had a blank check to do whatever he wanted. His choice? An unconventional one for the time. He made "Unbreakable," which was a very unique take on the superhero genre. It was also a movie that nearly featured an Oscar-winning actor in one of the leading roles.
For those who may need a brief refresher, "Unbreakable" centers on a man named David Dunn (Bruce Willis), who is the sole survivor of a horrible train wreck.

The corpse of Halloween is barely cold, but studios are keen to announce holiday-themed projects nonetheless. Thankfully, this one sounds like one hell of a ride! Maria Bakalova is catching a ride alongside Peter Mullan for No Way Off, a Christmas Eve thriller from Downton Abbey director Brian Kelly. Kelly directs from a script by Gaby Hull, with James Wilkinson producing.
Akin to movies like The Shallows, Buried, and Crawl, No Way Off finds Bakalova in the role of Laura, “a young mother who waits at a bus stop with her infant son. When the bus pulls up, its driver is wearing a latex Santa mask. Laura climbs aboard, collapsing into her seat. Exhausted and stressed, she soon falls asleep. When Laura wakes, night has fallen. The bus is now hurtling along a motorway, miles off its usual route. Apart from the sleeping baby, she is the only passenger left on board.

What sets Alfonso Cuaron’s “Children of Men” (2006) apart from other futuristic dystopian films is its immersive world, which at times feels like a premonition of an impending future. It accomplishes this by saturating every scene with images we are all too familiar with – those of homelessness, poverty, terrorist bombings, pollution, urban decay, stranded immigrants, and large-scale protests. The writing then magnifies them to create a portrait of a society on the brink of collapse.
It’s not just the visuals but even the news you hear on the radio and the advertisements that are on some television in the background are meticulously thought out. It’s said that after 9/11, Cuarón traveled the world, including a visit to Ground Zero in New York City shortly after the attacks, capturing images of protests, and migrant camps, and speaking with people from all walks of life. Watching “Children of Men,” I have to say,...

For those who haven’t dug into Apple TV Plus’s Disclaimer yet, let me tell you that you’re missing out on one of the most provocative shows of the year. Written and directed by the legendary Alfonso Cuarón, with cinematography duties split between Emmanuel Lubezki and Bruno Delbonnel, it’s an impeccably crafted limited series. It ranks up there with Twin Peaks: The Return and True Detective: Season One in how it’s proof that the limited series can indeed be a director’s medium if they’re given free rein, and how the long format can push them toward storytelling experimentation they’d never get the opportunity to try in a conventional film.
In Disclaimer, Cate Blanchett plays Catherine Ravenscroft, a celebrated journalist being harassed by a retired school teacher (Kevin Kline), who is convinced she’s responsible for the death of his son. Over the course of seven episodes,...

It’s right there at the beginning of Episode 1 of the Apple TV+ limited series, “Disclaimer” writer/director Alfonso Cuarón all but announces his intentions in a scene in which real-life journalist Christiane Amanpour presents an award to series’ fictional documentarian Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett).
“Beware of narrative and form,” says Amanpour. “Their power can bring us closer to the truth, but they can also be a weapon with a great power to manipulate.”
While a guest on an upcoming episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Cuarón discussed the pronouncement, “We decided to be bold and to begin with a warning. In other words audiences are warned.” But as Cuarón explained, he’s not worried about proclaiming his storytelling intentions — there’s no reason to hide the ball when the real game, the real discovery is how each viewer will react.

Sandra Bullock can easily be one of the most bankable actresses in Hollywood. She has an Academy Award by her side, perfectly solidifying her versatility as an actress. She has a string of well-acclaimed and commercially successful movies to her name. But in this list, Gravity directed by Alfonso Cuarón would definitely be her most successful movie.
Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in Gravity | Credits: Warner Bros.
Also featuring George Clooney alongside Bullock, the movie broke all records when it was released in 2013. And also swept the entire Oscars that year with back-to-back wins. While the movie created instant magic on the big screen, Cuarón had to deal with a lot of budget issues. And friendly advice by filmmaker James Cameron would have completely changed the movie as well as Bullock’s highest-paid actress status.

When director Max Winkler first read the script for “Grotesquerie” Episode 5, he knew he wanted to film most of the episode using one continuous shot. The problem was getting everyone else on board.
“I just kept lying to everybody, ‘We can do this.’ I was like, ‘1,000,000% we can do this,’ ” Winkler told TheWrap. Throughout the entire process, Winkler was reminded of one of his heroes, Marcelo Bielsa, manager of the Uruguay national team, who famously never had a Plan B other than to do Plan A better. That’s exactly the mindset Winkler brought to “Red Haze.”
“In my head, I was like, ‘Oh my god, are you really going to get fired over this? Are you really going to burn your way out of Hollywood on this idea?’ ” Winkler said. “But we did it. I’m really proud of everyone involved.”
It’s not difficult to understand Winkler’s panic over “Red Haze.

In Alfonso Cuarón’s seven-part Apple TV+ limited series “Disclaimer,” Cate Blanchett plays Catherine Ravenscroft, an accomplished and award-winning documentary filmmaker whose life is upended when a book is published based on a fictionalized version of a difficult event from her past.
But one of the points of “Disclaimer” is that viewers themselves are also upended, as the Oscar-winning, Mexican-born director of “Children of Men,” “Gravity” and “Roma” juggles present-day scenes with flashbacks, allowing viewers to discover the relationships between characters on their own. The story also shifts between a first person, second person and third person perspective depending on what character is on the screen.
It’s an approach that requires viewers to untangle a lot of narrative threads as they follow Blanchett and Sacha Baron Cohen as the adult Catherine and Robert Ravenscroft, Leila George and Adam El Hagar as their younger versions and Kevin Kline and Lesley Manville...

No one films the ocean as a proxy for emotional extremes like Alfonso Cuarón. In films like “Children of Men,” “Gravity” and “Roma,” the Mexican director — often in conjunction with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki — makes roiling waves a metaphor for everything from rebirth to safety to cathartic release. In this respect, the new Apple TV+ series “Disclaimer,” which Cuarón wrote and directed in its entirety, is a perfect fit for the “Y tu mamá también” auteur. “Disclaimer” centers on competing accounts of a young man’s fatal drowning on an Italian beach, and you can bet your bottom lira there are numerous and lengthy scenes built around the rhythmic crash of water.
But Cuarón is a much less intuitive match for other aspects of “Disclaimer,” which he adapted from Renée Knight’s 2015 novel of the same name. “Disclaimer” is, at its core, a talky, interpersonal drama about grief, self-deception and storytelling,...

Disclaimer's Rotten Tomatoes score is here, and serves as a redemption for Cate Blanchett after Borderlands. Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarn, Disclaimer features Blanchett starring as Catherine Ravenscroft, a journalist and documentarian whose life is turned upside down after she realizes that she's a main character in a novel, which threatens to reveal a dark secret. The Apple TV+ show, which also stars Kevin Kline and Sacha Baron Cohen, marks Blanchett's follow up to Eli Roth's Borderlands, which was a major critical and commercial flop, grossing only $33 million on an estimated $115 million budget.

Here at JoBlo, we love physical media – Especially 4K discs. To a lot of us, the 4K revolution has really given some of our favourite movies new life, with the format allowing us to see pristine versions of classic films that come the closest to presenting them in a way that allows us to experience them the way first run audiences did when they came out. While DVD and Blu-ray were both great for their time, 4K is miraculous, with movies like The Crow looking better in this format than they have since their original theatrical runs. One of the reasons is that the people doing the 4K restorations usually go back to a movie’s negative to make it look as good as it can, and the people restoring these films are passionate (even if some efforts have been controversial).
Yet, some of our favorite movies still aren’t available in 4K.

Near the start of Alfonso Cuarón’s sharply spiked Apple series, “Disclaimer,” a presenter at an awards ceremony honoring documentarian Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett) begins her speech by giving notice: “Beware of narrative and form,” she says. “Their power can bring us closer to the truth, but they can also be a weapon with a great power to manipulate.” Stories, like the ones Catherine crafts for her living, can provide clarity, but they can also be tailored by the teller to suit their own aims. They can take advantage of our assumptions and ingrained biases to steer us not toward the truth, but toward a desired distortion of that truth.
“In this way, Catherine’s work reveals something more problematic and profound: our own complicity in some of today’s more toxic social sins.”
Complicity. Narrative. Form. Cuarón isn’t shy in laying out his thesis, instructing the audience to...
