There's an uncredited appearance by Kristen Stewart (in her first role) as a girl in the fountain line. Her mother, Jules Stewart, was the script supervisor for the TV movie.
The final shot of Cody fully transformed into a merman and leaping out of the water was done by Chez holding onto a bar like a trapeze and being pulled out of the water. It was done with three supervising scuba divers around for safety in a pool in a studio.
Chez Starbeck's audition process included taking a swim test.
Brian Haley and Justin Jon Ross also worked together in Little Giants (1994), though they didn't have any lines together.
The concept of Cody's nature is somewhat similar to the beings featured in H.P. Lovecraft's novella "The Shadow over Innsmouth". In this tale, humans are forced to breed with the Deep Ones and their hybrid children migrate underwater upon maturing permanently. Although the offsprings are born as normal humans, changes in appearance and physiology tend to occur in late teens - known as the "Innsmouth Look". Some are unaware of their heritage and, as the change begins to come upon them, they may feel drawn to their birthplace.
