“The Substance” and “Wicked” took home the top prizes at the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) Awards.

The guild held its 12th annual awards ceremony at a new venue, moving from the Beverly Hilton Hotel to the Fairmont Plaza in Century City.

IATSE President Matthew Loeb started the show and called on Local 706 members to be generous “in this time.”

Loeb says, “There’s much to celebrate the incredible work that the members of local 706 do, their spirit of perseverance, appreciation of life, life in the arts, and their determination to rebuild.”

He announced that the evening was dedicated to the Walsh/ Di Tolla/Spivak Foundation to raise money to help those impacted by the wildfires. The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild will bestow Allison Janney with the union’s top honor, the Distinguished Artisan Award, on Saturday during the 12th annual Muahs Awards.

The guild presents the honor to an artist whose consistent collaboration with Local 706 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists has richly enhanced and created memorable characters throughout their career.

“Allison Janney brings such an eclectic range of fascinating characters to life in collaboration with her make-up and hair teams,” Julie Socash, president, Muahs, IATSE Local 706, said Tuesday in announcing the honor. “Her talent and versatility as an actress have won the hearts of fans on screen, TV and stage around the world. In her multi-award-winning career, she has portrayed a variety of memorable characters — from an estranged mother to the Vice President of the United States. We are excited to present the Artisan award to Allison and celebrate her achievements in the entertainment industry.

The movie is up for Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature, as well as Best International Feature.

The animated, feature-length movie “Flow” will make its streaming debut on Friday, Feb. 14, 70 days after being released in theaters on Dec. 6. “Flow” got a limited release in the U.S., but now audiences everywhere in the country will be able to stream it with a Max subscription starting at $10 per month.

The third season of Fox’s game show The Floor kicked off immediately following Super Bowl Lix between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Hosted by Rob Lowe, The Floor invites 100 contestants to compete against each other in a series of head-to-head duels, with a randomizer selecting players who then challenge someone standing next to them. Each person arrives at The Floor with a category in which they consider themselves to be an expert — things like Pantry Items, Tony Winners, and Marvel. The ultimate winner after 12 episodes will claim the $250,000 grand prize.

Soap opera veteran Bruce French has died. The actor who portrayed Father Lonigan on Passions was 79 years old. French was the husband of Days of Our Lives alum Eileen Barnett.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that French passed away on Friday in Los Angeles due to complications from Alzheimer’s. He was diagnosed with the disease four years ago. French was born on July 4, 1945, in Reinbeck, Iowa. He earned a degree from the University of Iowa, and he served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Finally, French studied acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

On Passions, French portrayed the blind Father Lonigan for the show’s entire nine seasons from 1999 to 2008. On the soap, baddie Alistair Crane (David Bailey; John Reilly) caused the Father to lose his sight.

He began his acting career in 1972 in the off-Broadway play, The Shadow of a Gunman.

Best known to daytime fans for his portrayal as Father Lonigan on “Passions,” actor Bruce French has died. He was 79 years old.

French died Friday, February 7 in Los Angeles of complications from Alzheimer’s, his wife of 34 years, Eileen Barnett (“Days of our Lives”), told The Hollywood Reporter. French was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s around four years ago, Barnett shared with the outlet.

On “Passions,” French made a memorable impression on the show playing a priest who had lost his sight after a church he had been in burned down while he was looking to save a statue of an angel. His primary role in Harmony was advising citizens on the problems they sought solutions to, particularly those told to him by the young adult characters.

French appeared in several hundred episodes of the drama series from its debut on NBC in July 1999 and into its run on DirecTV’s 101 Network.

Bruce French, a veteran of the stage and prolific character actor who worked with David E. Kelley and appeared in NBC’s aughts soap Passions across the entirety of its nine-season run, died Feb. 7 at the age of 79.

Plus, he played the wealthy neighbor of Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver’s shifty characters on both seasons of the 2007-08 FX drama The Riches.

DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter opened the 77th annual DGA Awards Saturday night by calling on studio executives and top producers to work to “bring production back to the U.S. and bring it back in force.”

Glatter told the crowd at the Beverly Hilton that she was among the thousands of people who lost homes in the wildfire that devastated the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles last month. She noted how much the generosity of the creative community has sustained her as she sorts through her loss.

“In the worst of times, our higher selves emerge,” she said.

It’s a “West Wing” reunion in “The Diplomat” Season 3, as Whitford has joined the cast as Todd Penn, husband to Janney’s Vice President Grace Penn. Netflix has released three first-look images from the upcoming season of the political thriller, which is currently in production and expected to debut sometime in 2025.

Kate Wyler’s (Keri Russell) work overseas isn’t letting up. The Diplomatis coming back for a third season and, by the looks of it, things are about to get a lot more complicated as Bradley Whitford joins the cast.

“Season 3 flips the chessboard,” creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn tells Tudum. “In Season 3, Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”

Production on the new season is well underway in London and New York. “We’re shooting some stuff already in Season 3 that involves big groups and lots of people, and we do tend to rehearse those [scenes],” Russell said during a November episode of Netflix’s Skip Intro podcast. “It’s such rapid-fire diplomatic speak that we make sure that everyone’s on the same page and knows what we’re actually talking about.”

The Diplomat is returning for another season this year and, while Netflix hasn’t said quite yet when the new season will debut, they are finally giving audiences a glimpse.

The streamer released some first look photos on Thursday, which feature newest cast member Bradley Whitford, who Deadline previously reported will be reuniting with his former The West Wing co-star Allison Janney to play her husband and the First Gentleman of the United States.

The photos don’t reveal much about what’s to come, other than some expected interaction between Grace Penn (Janney), her husband Todd Penn (Whitford), Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler and Rufus Sewell’s Hal Wyler.

One of the photos features all four of them standing in someone’s home staring at a tray of oysters. In that photo, as well as one other, Whitford’s character has a bandage wrapped around one of his hands...

The new menu experience on Max is rolling out to subscribers gradually.

Streaming services are constantly thinking of ways to simplify their user experience; after all, the more users enjoy their time on an app, the more likely they are to continue paying for it. Max is the latest service to make an overhaul to its interface to help viewers get to the content that they want to stream more quickly and easily. The Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service has announced it will begin rolling out a new homepage menu experience to all global subscribers after tests revealed that test users found the updated layout to be a success.

Key Details: Max’s new update moves menu tabs from the top of the screen into the left-hand menu. Two new navigation pages — Categories and What’s New — are being introduced. The new menu experience will roll out to customers gradually.

The first episode of Hulu’s Paradise, about a secret service agent assigned to a former U.S. president, ends with a twist of Sugar-esque proportions. It’s a surprise reveal that alters the entire reality of the series, sideswiping it into a whole new genre. The shift isn’t completely successful, though, and Paradise, created by Dan Fogelman, often feels like two or three different shows fighting for control of its eight-episode run.

The Golden Globes and the Academy Awards may steal all the attention at this time of year, but they aren’t the only prestigious awards shows honoring media. The duPont-Columbia Awards, broadcast journalism’s equivalent to Pulitzer Prizes, were handed out on Wednesday, and there were some big names in streaming among the honorees. Max, Netflix, and Paramount+ all won awards, while some major traditional news outlets were conspicuously left off the list of winners.

Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t letting Paramount skate over what it alleges was a breach of contract. The two legacy media companies are battling in court over the streaming rights to “South Park,” and the case will move forward after a denial of a motion by Paramount for a partial summary judgment to dismiss some claims. The legal fight will continue, and there’s a decent chance the case will end up in front of a jury before all is said and done.

Key Details: Justice Margaret A. Chan of the State Supreme Court in Manhattan said that Wbd’s claims against Paramount can go to the discovery phase in a recent ruling. The ruling may allow Wbd to get its hands on subscriber and profitability metrics from Paramount+.
