Khyentse Norbu is a lama, and all monks and lamas in the film were actual monks and lamas at the time of filming. The cook is the actual cook. The taxi driver is played by the producer.
Director Khyentse Norbu learned his trade by being an assistant to Bernardo Bertolucci on Little Buddha (1993).
The taxi cab was actually Orgyen Tobgyal's car. Norbu says it was wrecked before they finished the film.
