The Gate of Youth

The Gate of Youth is a 1975 Japanese drama film directed by Kiriro Urayama, based on a story by Hiroyuki Itsuki. It presents a compelling narrative that unfolds over three hours, delving into themes of family drama and suffering.

Set in the 7th year of Taisho (1918) in the Kitakyushu Chikutoyo Coalfield, the film depicts the rice riots that sweep through the area. After losing his wife early on, Shigezo raises his young son Shinsuke alone, eventually finding love with Tae, a maid from Amakusa.

However, one fateful day, Shigezo storms into a store and forcibly takes Tae away. Goro, a new member of the underworld who is infatuated with Tae, pursues them, leading to a fierce confrontation. Although Shinsuke soon gains a new mother, their moments of happiness are fleeting.
