There are a few documentarians who dabble in feature filmmaking: R.J. Cutler (“If I Stay”), Matt Heineman (“A Private War”), even Werner Herzog (there are many). To their ranks we can now add Oscar-winner Roger Ross Williams (“Music By Prudence”), and he’s all in on making it work.
At Telluride, Williams screened his well-reviewed Sundance feature “Cassandro”; saw the world premiere of “Stamped from the Beginning” at the Toronto International Film Festival; and Apple TV+ will air his four-part docuseries “The Super Models” September 20.
It’s an eclectic and vibrant collection of work and none of it was straightforward or easy. “Cassandro” is based on the true story of Luchador Saúl Armendáriz (Gael García Bernal in a career-best performance) who finds his true identity as the cross-dressing El Exotico on the Mexico wrestling circuit. Williams met his subject on the Amazon documentary short “The Man Without a Mask” (2016).

Filmmaker Roger Ross Williams is known for capturing moments of intimacy and awe in documentaries like God Loves Uganda and the Oscar-nominated Life, Animated. With Cassandro, a portrait of gay lucha libre wrestling star Saúl Armendáriz (Gael García Bernal), Williams has brought that sense of warmth and showmanship to his first scripted feature. The film, which arrives in theaters Sept. 15 and on Prime Video Sept. 22, is just one of a bumper crop of Williams projects that are landing in 2023, from HBO’s Love to Love You, Donna Summer, which premiered in May, to the AppleTV+ docuseries The Super Models, due Sept. 20, to his hybrid doc feature on the history of racism, Stamped from the Beginning, set to be released by Netflix in November.

From raging bulls to aging wrestlers, the ring has long provided a place for films to grapple with themes of masculinity. Roger Ross Williams’s rousing wrestling biopic Cassandro tells the story of a man, Saúl Armendáriz (Gael García Bernal), who rose to the very top of the industry by grabbing its outdated gender conventions and flipping them on their heads.
The film begins in the world of 1980s lucha libre, where the most aggressive brand of machismo has everyone in a chokehold. The wrestlers throw homophobic barbs at each other in the locker room before the matches begin, and the crowd takes up those same slurs after the bell rings. In both cases, the person most often on the receiving end is the night’s exótico, a wrestler defined by their flamboyant femininity. Naturally, the exótico is never allowed to win, as they’re here to be defeated by...

Gael García Bernal nails his best role in years, giving a performance steeped in cheeky humor, resilience and radical self-belief — not to mention some amazingly nimble moves — as groundbreaking lucha libre wrestler Saúl Armendáriz in Cassandro. Seasoned documentarian Roger Ross Williams, who profiled Armendáriz in 2016 for the Amazon series The New Yorker Presents, makes an assured transition into narrative features with this entertaining biopic, which doubles as a gorgeous depiction of mother-son love and an exhilarating exploration of fearless queer identity in a macho environment.
While Williams (Life, Animated) and co-screenwriter David Teague (who adapted Ta-Nehesi Coates’ Between the World and Me for HBO) slightly fumble the ending, this is a film with enormous heart, vivid immersion into its culturally specific milieu and celebratory admiration for its flamboyant subject, images of whom both in and out of the ring grace the end credits. [Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Good Place” Season 2, Episode 4, “Team Cockroach.”]
Years from now, if NBC programming decisions and our ability to stave off nuclear annhiliation cooperate, there’s a chance that we could look back on “Team Cockroach” as the moment that things started to look up for the core group on “The Good Place.” Michael being cooperative with no obvious unspoken ulterior motive, Eleanor asserting herself to her companions and her nemesis, and Jason finding a nice comfy spot on the couch. Everything is as it should be. Of course, this is also a comedy where nothing is ever really as it seems.
The best parts of “Team Cockroach” play out in the bottle episode confines of Eleanor’s sensible nightmare clown foyer, with Michael and the tortured quartet deciding how best to move forward to spare all of their eternal souls. Each side of the truce argues that they have the upper hand, with the humans declaring that...

Can you really trust a demon whose sole purpose is to torture you for eternity? That’s the dilemma facing Eleanor and company this week on The Good Place.
We pick up where we left off, with Michael asking the gang to team up with him. Eleanor’s instantly suspicious of his offer, and can sense that Michael needs them more than they need him. Michael warns them that the clock is ticking: Vicky is rebooting the town in 30 minutes… but Michael offers to not erase their memories this time, so they can continue their ethics lessons (and friendships) in secret.

One of the best parts about Sean Spicer’s role as White House Press Secretary was the “Saturday Night Live” sketches he inspired. But now that he has stepped down, nighttime television may need to find a new way to make fun of him. “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” to the rescue! On Monday, “The Tonight Show” posted a video on Twitter of Spicey “singing” Gloria Gaynor’s classic disco hit, “I Will Survive.” Ok, so, he’s not really singing. Instead, they took snippets from his various press conferences and pieced together to form the exact song lyrics.

TV is full of characters that wear eyepatches for various reasons, and sometimes it’s simply to stand out among a huge cast.
When it comes to dramas like “Twin Peaks” or genre series like “Game of Thrones” or “The Walking Dead,” massive casts of characters allow for variety, whether it’s the run-of-the-mill diner waitress or the sword-swinging knight or the eyepatch-wearing neighbor.

That’s an interesting interpretation! Anne Hathaway visited The Tonight Show on Monday to embrace her musical side with host Jimmy Fallon.
Watch: Exclusive: Anne Hathaway on Filming 'Colossal' While Pregnant & Working With Kim Kardashian: 'She's So Sweet'
The Colossal star happily participated in a game of “Google Translate Songs” where popular tunes were put through the often-faulty Google Translator.
Hathaway jammed out to The Weeknd’s “I Can’t Feel My Face,” singing the drastically different lyrics.
“In your presence, my front is not felt. Hey it is good, hey it is good,” she crooned while holding back the laughter.
Fallon then went singing, “I Will Survive,” which translated to, “I will be punctual.”
The pair then teamed up for Pink and Nate Ruess’ “Just Give Me a Reason,” which didn’t even come close to resembling the original tune. Watch the clip to see what happened!

What is an a cappella diva “riff-off”? It’s what happened when Demi Lovato challenged James Corden to sing diva hits with an a cappella accompaniment.
The pop singer heard Corden telling his Late Late Show audience on Wednesday that divas from the age of Tina Turner and Cher are better than ones from today. So, she brought out a cappella group Level to see which songs hold up.

Demi Lovato and James Corden had a riff-off after the host wagered that divas of the past, like Tina Turner, are better than divas of the present, like Adele.
For the riff-off, Lovato invited the a cappella group Level to back them both onstage. The "Confident" singer kicked things off with Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" before Corden launched into Turner's "River Deep — Mountain High." After throwing some playful insults at one another, Corden sang a bit of Aretha Franklin's "Respect," which Lovato countered with Katy Perry's "Roar...

From the mind of James Gunn, and director Greg McLean, comes The Belko Experiment. If you're on its wavelength, you're going to love it...
As The Belko Experiment opens we hear a Spanish language version of a pop song and, after a moment, we realise it’s I Will Survive. It’s the on-the-nose punchline to a joke that we don’t fully get at that point and a hint of what a dark, mischievous film lies ahead.
I think The Belko Experiment is an excellent film. I don’t know that you’ll agree with me.
It’s a film that’s an odd shape. It’s twisted and warped, and it crawls into your head looking to slither through some of the more hard-to-reach and unpleasant nooks in your brain. And if your brain isn’t twisted or misshapen just so, I’m not sure that you’ll find the experience particularly pleasant.

Brie Bella is well-versed when it comes to enduring physical stress on her body, but she understands that carrying a child — and giving birth — are a different story.
“Everyone can tell you what pregnancy feels like, but it will still be new to you,” the WWE Divas Champion tells Fit Pregnancy and Baby for its April cover story. “I’m preparing for a natural birth. I hope I can stick with that, but obviously I’m open to medical help if need be.”
Bella, 33, isn’t worried about being uncomfortable, though — and her reason why makes a lot of sense.
