This article contains spoilers for It Follows, Sinister, Ringu, the original Blair Witch Project and – as always – Fight Club.
It’s everywhere, it’s terrifying and it’s preying on our fragile psyches. No, not The X Factor, but the other monster, the one we might like to call ‘absolutely nothing at all, really’. It’s the sky, the darkness, the woods or just the background in the frame surrounding the people we see in our television shows and movies. It’s where the threat is, or might be – the unknown in which something could suddenly appear at any moment.
Negative space can be an essential element of any visual composition, but it’s horror movies that often rely on what you don’t see to make a story work.

A while back it was announced that Scream Factory would finally be bringing the “Cabal Cut” of Nightbreed to home video. Fans have begged for this release for a long time, so the excitement levels were high. A bit later, it was revealed that it wouldn’t actually be the Cabal Cut, but a new, director approved Director’s Cut of the film. Some were angry that it wouldn’t technically be the cut of the film that they wanted, but after a quick explanation, I was convinced that this would be superior. This is a new director’s cut of the film approved by Clive Barker. The reason the Cabal Cut isn’t what’s being released, is that basically, it’s the kitchen sink version of the film. Everything available was compiled to comprise the Cabal Cut, so the film is being whittled down, so that we still...

The Marvel universe recently got a whole lot darker when they announced that Scott Derrickson would be directing the upcoming Doctor Strange film, but before he takes a crack at that blockbuster, he’ll be looking to scare viewers senseless once again with one of the summer’s most talked about horror films — Deliver Us From Evil. Based on real-life NYPD sergeant Ralph Sarchie’s personal accounts, Derrickson brings to life a true story about possessions, terrors, and evil forces that unfolded in the Bronx in New York City. From the footage we’ve seen, all signs point to a spookily satanic “true story” that shows a completely hidden side of the Big Apple, but ever since Derrickson was named director, we knew Deliver Us From Evil was in good hands.
Satan, exorcisms, death, hauntings — all these genre tools are old hat for Derrickson. Hellraiser: Inferno marked the director’s first feature film,...

This week, we learned that Scott Derrickson (director of Sinister and co-writer on the upcoming Sinister 2) will be making the journey to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the director for Marvel Studios’ still technically-unannounced Doctor Strange movie. Well before then, however, Derrickson will be unveiling his latest spooky film, in the form of Deliver Us From Evil – and today, we can offer the latest international trailer and first TV spot for the crime/horror thriller, starring Eric Bana (Munich, Star Trek).
In addition to directing, Derrickson also co-wrote the script for Deliver Us From Evil with his frequent collaborator, Paul Harris Boardman (Hellraiser: Inferno, The Exorcism of Emily Rose), drawing inspiration from the book “Beware the Night” written by Lisa Collier Cool and the real-life ex-cop, Ralph Sarchie – who, as portrayed by Bana in the film adaptation, joins ...

Marvel Studios' Ant-Man may be without a director and still planned for release next year, but that hasn't stopped development on the other films that the Disney-owned company has slated for its "Phase 3" lineup. According to Variety and other sources, horror director Scott Derrickson has been tapped to help finally bring Doctor Strange to the big-screen. "Negotiations are still early," reveals trade magazine, "but sources say he is Marvel's choice and deal should be struck shortly." Derrickson's directing credits include Hellraiser: Inferno (2000), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), and Sinister (2012), with Deliver Us From Evil set to hit theaters next month. Even though the filmmaker also co-wrote those horror flicks, The Hollywood Reporter suggests not only that Marvel Studios is still seeking a writer to rewrite the Doctor Strange script, but also that Kung Fu Panda duo screenwriters Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger...

The Marvel marketing machine is now in full swing, promoting the company’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but, as always, our interests lie more in what’s further down the road. The studio is notorious for planning years in advance, and one film they’ve been talking about for some time now is Doctor Strange. We know Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige is excited about it, and though the movie hasn’t even been officially announced yet, we recently heard that a shortlist of directors had emerged.

In 2012 director Scott Derrickson delivered a flawed but seriously scary horror movie in Sinister, the chilling tale of a man who, for some reason, does not turn on any lights when walking around his house at night. Oh, and there was also an ancient demon who preyed on the souls of children and had the kind of face that you don’t want to see up close.
Derrickson wrote and directed Hellraiser: Inferno - definitely one of the better Hellraiser sequels – as well as The Exorcism of Emily Rose. In his upcoming horror movie Deliver Us from Evil, he returns again to the subject of demonic possession. Eric Bana plays an NYPD officer whose investigation into a series of disturbing crimes draws him unwittingly into a battle against dark supernatural forces.

We've always had a fascination with monsters. Some are pretty forgettable, while others have found a place in our hearts or struck deep into our psyches. But we've come a long way from the nuclear age of giant ants terrorizing middle America and atomic lizards the size of skyscrapers engaging in battles with gargantuan apes. The modern monster has evolved from the golden age of Bela Lugosi's blood-sucking antics in the depths of Transylvania, or the stop-motion excellence of Ray Harryhausen – designs still vehemently admired to this day thanks to publications like Famous Monsters of Filmland. There's always been a kind of aesthetic beauty to be found in monsters, and the advances in makeup effects are constantly lifting the limits on the imagination; the possibilities of future monsterdom are becoming endless. Some of our filmmaking heroes are so adept at realizing visually dazzling creatures that it's become their professional calling card (Guillermo Del Toro,...

Although I can’t say that I know anyone who is presently longing for more exorcism movies, that isn’t stopping the greasy Hollywood machine from farting another one into theaters. I personally gave up on this subgenre long ago, though it would appear someone keeps watching these things. Be sure to raise your hand so everyone can see who to blame. The folks at Screen Gems are currently putting together the exorcism flick “Beware the Night” with Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez, and Olivia Munn. Scott Derrickson, the man responsible for both “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” and “Hellraiser: Inferno”, is bringing the project to the big screen. He reportedly co-wrote the movie with Paul Harris Boardman. Eric Bana will portray an Irish Catholic cop who joins forces with a priest to battle the forces of evil. Ramirez will play the man of the cloth while Munn will portray the cop’s wife.

And while the pair have been branching out with Boardman taking screenwriting jobs elsewhere, and Derrickson teaming up with C. Robert Cargill for the recently released Sinister, their latest collaboration is gearing up, and will delve deeper into the strange subgenre of supernatural crime thriller that seems to attract them both. Titled Beware the Night, this paranormal thriller centers on a New York cop charged with tackling cases of "real life demon possessions, exorcisms and werewolves." The Wrap reports Screen Gems is currently considering backing the production, which just got more enticing with word that Eric Bana is in talks to star. Notably, Mark Wahlberg was previously eyed for the role, but no mention is made...

It pains me to say this, but truly scary, well-made horror films being released in theaters are few and far between these days. Such films being released during the holy horror month of October — oddly — are even more scarce. Fortunately, we have writer C. Robert Cargill‘s frightening film to thank, inspired by the persistent image of a family hanging dead from an old tree, which haunted his dreams until the day he wrote the screenplay… or, perhaps it still does.
Sinister is Cargill’s first feature screenplay and is directed by Scott Derrickson (Hellraiser: Inferno). The film stars an unlikely, but familiar face in Ethan Hawke (Daybreakers), an actor not known for showing up in horror films. Regardless, Hawke still delivers the same caliber of performance we’re used to seeing in his dramatic roles, playing Ellison Oswalt, a once famous now struggling writer of true crime novels. Sinister is the latest supernatural horror-thriller from filmmaker Scott Derrickson (Hellraiser: Inferno, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and produced by Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious), which opens in theaters today (read our Sinister review).
The film stars Ethan Hawke as an ambitious true-crime novelist who moves his family to a house where the previous occupants were mysteriously murdered some nine months before, in hopes that it will inspire him to create a new book. When he discovers home footage that reveals the truth behind their deaths, it puts his loved ones on a collision course with a malicious supernatural entity.
We had a chance to sit down and talk with Hawke about Sinister. The conversation covered such topics as what drew him to the script written by C. Robert Cargill, as well as his admiration of Derrickson’s Exorcism of Emily Rose (and ...

From Director Scott Derrickson who brought you " The Exorcism of Emily Rose "," The Day the Earth Stood Still " remake, and " Hellraiser: Inferno" comes a new horror flick just in time for Halloween. Found footage helps a true-crime novelist (Ethan Hawke) realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity. -IMDb I saw it a little early and what did I th…...

Paul Boardman has been tapped to write a film adaptation of Guilty Wives, based on the book by James Patterson and David Ellis.
Here’s the synopsis from Barnes and Noble:
Only minutes after Abbie Elliot and her three best friends step off of a private helicopter, they enter the most luxurious, sumptuous, sensually pampering hotel they have ever been to. Their lavish presidential suite overlooks Monte Carlo, and they surrender: to the sun and pool, to the sashimi and sake, to the Bruno Paillard champagne. For four days they’re free to live someone else’s life. As the weekend moves into pulsating discos, high-stakes casinos, and beyond, Abbie is transported to the greatest pleasure and release she has ever known.
What happened last night?
In the morning’s harsh light, Abbie awakens on a yacht, surrounded by police. Something awful has happened–something impossible, unthinkable. Abbie, Winnie, Serena,...

Following an overabundance of found-footage horror films flooding theaters over the past few years, recent scary movies have attempted to find clever variations on the sub-genre. Those approaches include: merely aping the look of a faux documentary (Chernobyl Diaries), incorporating more straight sci-fi elements into the mix (Area 407) – and using recovered footage of horrible events as a pivotal plot point, as is the case with the upcoming horror-thriller, Sinister.
Today, we have an official trailer from Sinister to show. The film marks the latest venture into the supernatural horror realm by writer/director Scott Derrickson, who started his career off by working on sub-par sequels like Urban Legends: Final Cut and the direct-to-video Hellraiser: Inferno. Since then, Derrickson has gone on to achieve more financial success (if limited critical success) with movies such as The ...

Lionsgate will bring a new supernatural spine tingle to the masses on October 5th. Releasing theatrically, Sinister screened at SXSW to positive acclaim, and Lionsgate will look to turn that early buzz into big box office bucks. Gearing up for the seasonal release, the good folks at Lionsgate are rolling out a couple bad ass posters that are sure to snag the attention of genre fans. Scott Derrickson, who wrote and directed the popular The Exorcism of Emily Rose as well as Hellraiser: Inferno will spearhead Sinister; again tackling writing and directorial duties. Ethan Hawke (Taking Lives, Daybreakers), Vincent D'Onofrio (The Cell, Chained), James Ransone (Prom Night, Jericho), Juliet Rylance (Animal) and Fred Dalton Thompson (Cape Fear, Die Hard 2) round out the picture’s focal cast.

Continuing a recent trend for horror movie posters featuring girls against crumbling white walls, here's a new poster for Scott Derrickson's Sinister, starring Ethan Hawke. You have your choice of the static version below, or one of those newfangled motion posters. Either way, it's kinda bloody. The film takes the old cynical-writer-meets-supernatural-mystery angle (think 1408, and plenty of others) with Hawke as a true-crime hack who moves into a house that was the site of an entire family's gruesome murder. He then discovers a box of films of other murders stowed in his charming new crib, and finds his ongoing investigation leading into paranormal territory and his own family in some serious danger. The entity revealed on the wall there is apparently referred to as Mr Boogie. We doubt that's a dance thing, somehow.Derrickson cut his teeth on franchise sequels like Hellraiser: Inferno and Urban Legends: Final Cut, before...

They may run out of ideas or slip into absurdity, but horror franchises never truly end. Here’s a selection of a few of the most persistent…
In the horror genre, death is never the end. It’s true of its seemingly indestructible antagonists, and it’s frequently true of the movies in which they appear – it’s highly unusual for a lucrative horror series to ever truly end, even if the title claims that what you’ve paid to see really is the final instalment.
To this end, here are 10 horror franchises that, no matter how many times they appear to have run out of ways of killing people, still keep coming back from the grave. And because horror sequels so frequently play around with time, we’ll approach this particular list in no particular order, starting with a gore-laden hit in glorious 3D…

The delightfully hot Charlize Theron ('Monster') is set to star and produce the remake of Dutch horror flick 'Zwart Water'. The Summit Entertainment production is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson ('The Exorcism of Emily Rose') will helm the project from the script adapted by scribe Paul Harris Boardman, who also penned 'Hellraiser: Inferno' and 'Urban Legends: Final Cut'. Charlize (below) will also be steaming up the specs of many-a sci-fi geek next Summer when she stars in Ridley Scott's new 'Alien'-esque prequel 'Prometheus'. The original ghost story from writer/director Elbert van Strien was released last year as 'Two Eyes Staring' internationally, which is surprising due to the actual translation being 'Black Water', and starred Hadewych Minis, Barry Atsma, Isabelle Stokkel and Charlotte Arnoldy. Check out the plot info from the original below.

According to the La Times, Insidious producer Jason Blum is working with Scott Derrickson on "a horror story with a crime at the center." That's all we know. No title, plot, etc, but they plan to use Insidious' model of a low budget and scary story over big stars and pricey FX. Riveting, huh? So let's use the rest of the space to talk about Derrickson's output so far. Hellraiser: Inferno is probably the best of the Dtv Hellraiser movies, which isn't really saying much, but still worth noting (I like that it borrowed plot points from Nightbreed). I also think The Exorcism of Emily Rose is one of the best exorcism-based movies to come along since, you know, The Exorcist, but the less said about The Day The Earth Stood Still, the better.

Scott Derrickson, the director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose , is aligning himself with one of the hottest producers in horror right now. Jason Blum - part of the team behind Paranormal Activity , Insidious and the upcoming films Lords of Salem and The Bay - told the L.A. Times that he's working with Derrickson on a new film that is "a horror story with a crime at the center." That's all he's willing to say for now. Insidious is currently the most profitable film of 2011, so Blum and his partners are enjoying their success and trying to maintain a similar budget model on their upcoming efforts. Low cost. Great execution. High profit. Derrickson also direct Hellraiser: Inferno and The Day the Earth Stood Still . More on his project as it comes!

With the announcement of Echo Bridge Entertainment bringing Dimension flicks to Blu-ray, we knew that there would be a parade of sequels headed our way. The only question was when. Now we know.
According to Blu-ray.com on May 10th Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest, Dracula 2000, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers and Hellraiser: Bloodline will be making their high definition debut.
Then, a couple of days later on May 15th, Echo Bridge will be dropping a bunch of double feature Blu-rays on us in the forms of Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror/Children of the Corn 666: Isacc's Return, From Dusk Till Dawn/From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers/Halloween: H20 and Hellraiser: Bloodline/Hellraiser: Inferno.
It's a pretty safe bet that either the packages will be bare bones or extras from the DVD's will port over.

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.
So farewell fight fans and remember,...

Scott Derrickson has signed on to direct "Hyperion Cantos" for Warner Bros. and Gk Films.
Variety says the film is based on Dan Simmons' sci-fi novels "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion."
The trade describes the plot as follows:
"Story is set in the distant future, as a space war threatens Hyperion, a planet known for the Time Tombs -- large artifacts that can move through time and are guarded by a gruesome monster called the Shrike."
Interesting. Trevor Sands, who wrote and directed 2002's "Inside," is penning the adaptation. He also recently adapted David Brin's novel "Startide Rising."
Derrickson most recently directed the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still." His credits also include "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "Hellraiser: Inferno."
One of Derrickson's upcoming projects is "Paradise Lost," based on John Milton's epic poem.
