Due a Belgium program "De Jaren Stillekes" broadcasted in 2011 they were talking and showing parts of this overlooked flick. Even I haven't heard about it until I saw it on that particular program. So I start searching for it and it came clear that it isn't that easy to find the DVD. It had a proper release but it is already OOP. It's only at conventions or flea markets that it sometimes pop up.
It is overlooked because when it was released in conservative Belgium it was broken down immediately by the critics. It contained too much sex and violence. That was not done and when it hit the theaters it flopped.
But what a great flick it is after all. Naturally up to today's standards it's low on everything but it contains indeed a lot of nudity. And in the most gratuitous ways. When the director Herman Wuyts shot it it was going to be the biggest production concerning money that would be made in Belgium. And it shows, the way the camera is used is excellent. The visual effects used when editing is also one to watch closely. And on the effects on the set they also used a lot of money, explosions, cars being blown up, and I can go on and on.
On the other hand it's weird that two of the main leads never went further as actor, Princess played by Virginia Mailer was her one and only performance as did Walter played by Franz Marijnen. The other main lead Herman Van Veen became big in the Netherlands after wards. But there were other big names to watch, Polly Geerts made a lot of television flicks but the biggest names were Mariette Van Arkkels who is seen in Malpertuis (1971) and her last effort Mega Mindy. You can also see Bob Van Der Veken (president Sextra), maybe the biggest name who has a cult status in Belgium due De Collega's as Thienpondt and did his last performance in De Kotmadam in 2009.
The acting was sublime by Bob and Virginia but Herman was a bit mediocre. The story is simple to follow. It's a bit of a romance story but it also has it's exploitation feeling towards the gratuitous nudity. They even put a bit of slapstick in it but it's for you to see were (wheelchair anybody?).
There are so many Belgium flicks still unreleased like the camp 'The Antwerp Killer' amongst others. Hopefully maybe some day they will get their release. If you come across this DVD don't hesitate to pick it up, a classic with cult status.
