Among the highlights of the projects set for CineMart are Ukrainian auteur Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk’s Something Strange Happened to Me, the director’s follow-up to his acclaimed debut Pamfir; Kenyan filmmaker Angela Wanjiku Wamai’s neo-Western Enkop; and The Uganda Project, the new film from Daniel Mann, whose Under a Blue Sun screened in Rotterdam’s Tiger Competition in 2024.

Judging by atmosphere alone, Nosferatu is a triumph. Writer-director Robert Eggers has applied his meticulous process to the sighing ossuaries and sickly maidens of gothic horror, adapting Bram Stoker’s seminal Dracula and its illegitimate offspring Nosferatu for contemporary audiences. Sumptuously realized and terminally self-serious, it’s the culmination of...

Ken Page was best known as a stage actor, with Deadline referring to him as one of Broadway’s most familiar character actors, but he did earn several film credits over the decades as well, appearing in films like Torch Song Trilogy, The Kid Who Loved Christmas, I’ll Do Anything, and Dreamgirls, as well as TV shows like Gimme a Break!, Family Matters, Touched by an Angel, and more. Page also did a good amount of voice acting work – with his most popular credit coming when he provided the voice of Oogie Boogie in the Henry Selick / Tim Burton stop-motion classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. Page would go on to voice Oogie Boogie again for the Kingdom Hearts video games, the video game The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, and the ride walk-through short Haunted Mansion Holiday. Sadly, it’s being reported that Page passed away in his sleep...

"I didn't make him for you!" is the line from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and it's as true of Frank and Rocky and the eponymous film as it is of The Phantom Of The Paradise. Counting among its fans film-makers like Brian De Palma and Edgar Wright, it's a film whose cult following is a testament to its invention and the singularity of its intent.
50 years later it's still impressive that anyone thought it fit to run The Phantom Of The Opera and Faust and the Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Portrait Of Dorian Gray through a blender and garnish it with sex and drugs and rock and roll and, most importantly, make it a musical. The variety displayed here is more than just show. In its depiction of the business there are few holds barred. To take something as weirdly pure and hammer...

Does anyone remember the Satanic panic? It was a bizarre mix of urban legend, conspiracy theory, media frenzy, and religious fanaticism that occurred primarily in the early 1980s. The phenomenon was marked by thousands of alleged incidents of ritualized abuse, often involving children, and desecrations reportedly perpetrated across the nation by scores of so-called Satanic cults in towns and cities everywhere. While many of the reports were later found to be baseless—and the initial investigative techniques used to supposedly substantiate them discredited—the aftermath of the panic remains with us today in the shape of things such as QAnon and PizzaGate.
The roots of the Satanic panic were found in the late 1960s and ‘70s, thanks to books like The Satan Seller, social changes like the rise of the counterculture in the national zeitgeist, infamous events like the Manson Family murders, the introduction of new religions into American society,...

The 2000s saw the action genre in a state of flux. The Matrix revolutionized everything at the end of the previous decade, The Bourne Supremacy would make shaky cameras standard practice in 2004, and the MCU would take flight with Iron Man in 2008. At the same time, Michael Bay reached his ultimate form with Bad Boys II, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kill Bill made kung fu classy, and Oldboy changed the way we look at hallways.
Within those changes came a host of greats that didn’t get the same attention. Some of these movies represent the first steps in the development of those who would define the genre, such as Scott Adkins and Gareth Evans. Some find stars at the height of the powers, such as Donny Yen and Michael Jai White. And some are just cool, because that’s really all an action movie needs.

Rebecca Ferguson explains that part of why Isla was killed in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning was because she didn't want the character to become a "team player". Ferguson also reveals that the franchise's production style resulted in a lot of time spent on the sidelines, and she wanted to work more. Mission: Impossible movies under director Christopher McQuarrie have adopted an unorthodox filming style where there isn't always a clear blueprint for the film ahead of time.

Like most movies, The Invisible Man travelled a long and winding road to the silver screen, and perhaps longer and more winding than most. As biographer James Curtis put it in his book James Whale: A New World of Gods and Monsters, “The gestation of The Invisible Man was the lengthiest and most convoluted of all of James Whale’s films. It involved four directors, nine writers, six treatments, and ten separate screenplays—all for a film that emerged very much in harmony with the book on which it was based.” It was first suggested as a possible follow-up to Dracula (1931), perhaps as a vehicle for new star Bela Lugosi, but was dropped in favor of Frankenstein (1931) due to the complicated special effects it would require. After Frankenstein was an even bigger success, both director James Whale and star Boris Karloff were immediately attached to The Invisible Man and several...

Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World. On the steep, cobbled street leading down from the GranRex cinema in Locarno, soon after emerging from El Rio y la Muerte, a deeply engrossing account of a bitter blood feud nourished by generations of Mexican machismo, I thought about Radu Jude's Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World. This was hardly an isolated incident. I had thought about Jude's movie while taking a bus to the other side of town the day before. I would be thinking about it again on a Zoom call the following week. Conversations with colleagues, a sandwich lunch on a bench, even some of my crisp-hotel-bed dreams were colored by the film, glancing off it, bumping into it, minding their own business only to be startled by it leaping out of a nearby shrubbery. When the guy in the...

Punchdrunk has released new images of The Burnt City as the show enters its final eight weeks. Following a record-breaking eighteen months in London, the final performance of Punchdrunk’s The Burnt City will be held on 24 September 2023.

Opening in March 2022, the production has sold over 200,000 tickets. By the time it closes, the show will be the longest running mask show that the company has presented in London.
Over 600 people have worked on the show, making it the largest project in Punchdrunk’s history. The epic retelling of the end of the Trojan war, set between the neon-drenched backstreets of downtown Troy and the menacing but opulent shadow of Greece, is played out across two vast warehouse buildings. Part of the old Woolwich Arsenal, these buildings provide Punchdrunk with its first permanent home in London.

As the beginning of his IMDb bio states, “Every horror film buff will recognize the name Jacques Haitkin.” Haitkin was the cinematographer on one of the most popular horror movies ever made, the 1984 Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (watch it Here). And while Craven didn’t return to the helm for A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Haitkin did return to be the cinematographer on that sequel. Sadly, we have to share the news today that Jacques Haitkin is no longer with us. This news was broken on the Facebook account of filmmaker Tony Randel, who is best known for directing Hellbound: Hellraiser II and worked with Haitkin on Galaxy of Terror, Ticks, Fist of the North Star, Rattled, One Good Turn, and Assignment Berlin.
Randel posted, “I knew Jacques Haitkin practically my entire career. We met on a Roger Corman horror/sci-fi epic – Galaxy of Terror.

Peter Bart: Hollywood Stars Get High Marks Returning To Fall Film Festivals And Hustling Their Wares
While the Emmys drew mixed reviews, the film festivals closed to strong applause this week, not only for their movies (we’d forgotten some) but for their star turnout.
Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, Taylor Swift and Julianne Moore were out there giving interviews and courting critics as in years gone by. Some had become strangers due to a mix of Covid-caused delays and their own rigid rules of self-protection.
Movie stars once made three or four films a year and were constantly before us, pitching their wares. I once congratulated Tom Hanks three times in a week and the Damon-Affleck team seemed equally ubiquitous. Now even Jennifer Lawrence wants the spotlight again and Harrison Ford has also abandoned invisibility.
Of course, the presence of stars at premieres also guarantees some flying shrapnel on social media. At the Venice premiere of Don’t Worry Darling, did Florence Pugh,...

The Diablo franchise has traditionally relied on a fairly simple equipment system. Every player can equip Rings, Pants, Boots, Helmets, and an armory’s worth of weapons, but Diablo Immortal adds yet another item class to that formula.
Throughout the game, Diablo Immortal players will occasionally find Charms: rare, endgame-focused pieces of equipment that provide various buffs. Those items are new to the franchise and function slightly differently than traditional gear such as Amulets and Belts. In fact, Charms are not part of the standard loot table, and you can’t just upgrade them as if they were any other piece of equipment. Diving into Lost Ark can be an overwhelming experience, but don’t be surprised if the first thing you find yourself wondering is “How do I change these mouse controls as fast as possible?”
Lost Ark’s mouse controls are…strange. The game’s basic mouse controls require you to attack with the left mouse button and move/interact with the right mouse button, which is a configuration we see in some Moba titles but is also one that will feel odd to anybody expecting the Arpg to play like Diablo.
In a perfect world, there would be a way to mimic Diablo’s mouse controls in Lost Ark (which is basically a way to say that you’d be able to let the left mouse button do most of the work), but that is sadly not the case. If you’re interested, though, there is a way to tweak...

In a perfect world, there would be a way to mimic Diablo’s mouse controls in Lost Ark (which is basically a way to say that you’d be able to let the left mouse button do most of the work), but that is sadly not the case. If you’re interested, though, there is a way to tweak...

Lost Ark is quickly proving to be one of Steam’s biggest hits of 2022, but the game’s complicated release structure has many people wondering what time the red hot title will fully be released and when they’ll be able to join the millions that are already exploring the game that has a lot of people talking.
Originally released (in full) in South Korea in 2019, Lost Ark is an Mmorpg with Diablo-like Arpg combat. The game quickly grew a sizeable fanbase in that region thanks to its PvP mechanics, extensive content offerings, cinematic style, and all those other Mmo tropes that usually encourage people to gleefully spend a few hundred hours of their lives playing them.
So, while Lost Ark has been playable in South Korea and other regions for quite some time, those in the West who recently pre-ordered any of the Lost Ark Founder’s Pack...

Microsoft is acquiring rival Activision Blizzard in a $68.7 billion deal that will reshape the video game sector.
The all-cash transaction, the largest in Microsoft’s history, will vault the company to the No. 3 spot among all global video game companies by revenue, behind Tencent and Sony. At $95 per share, the deal represents a 45% premium on last Friday’s closing price of Activision Blizzard stock.
Activision Blizzard’s various divisions make games like Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, Call of Duty and Candy Crush, in addition to eSports ventures via Major League Gaming. The company has studios around the word with nearly 10,000 employees.
Gaming has surged during the coronavirus pandemic, and the deal is just the latest combination of significant players. Last week, Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive said it would acquire Zynga, which makes mobile games, in a deal worth $12.7 billion.

My favorite thing about the Venice Film Festival …
It takes place in Venice. The place is just astonishing. You get to see great films, but you can still escape and see an art exhibition.
My ‘only in Venice’ moment was …
My biggest Venice moments have come when I wasn’t in Venice. We’ve had two films that won the Golden Lion — Alexander Sokurov’s Faust in 2011 and Lav Diaz’s The Woman Who Left in 2016. Both times I was already in Toronto when the announcement came.
The most inaccurate cliche about Italians that Venice proves wrong is …

When she was growing up in Nalchik, the capital of Russia’s remote Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, Kira Kovalenko wasn’t particularly interested in cinema. She can cite few films that inspired her as a girl. “In all honesty, I never wanted to be a director,” she tells Variety.
The 31-year-old filmmaker has traveled a long way since, as she prepares to bow her second feature, “Unclenching the Fists,” in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. Produced by two-time Oscar nominee Alexander Rodnyansky, her sophomore effort marks her as a rising talent in a country with a venerable tradition of arthouse auteurs.
Sitting in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, Nalchik is far from Russia’s cultural lode stars in Moscow and St. Petersburg. It’s a city that likely would never have produced a single filmmaker to walk the red carpet in Cannes — let alone two — were it not for Alexander Sokurov,...

An animated series adaptation of comic book series “Faust” is in development at Sony Pictures Television, TheWrap has confirmed.
The project will be written by Matteo Pizzolo, creator of the “Godkiller” franchise.
Written by David Quinn with art by TIm Vigil, “Faust” was first published in 1987. The series centers on John Jaspers, a mental patient-turned-vigilante who sells his soul in exchange for super powers and then must use them to save his lover from his former boss.
The series was published across 15 issues between 1987 and 2012. The series became known for its graphic violence and sexual content, with the first issue going on to sell 100,000 copies. In 2000, an English-language feature adaptation directed by Brian Yuzna was released in Spain under the title “Faust: Love of the Damned.”
Pizzolo’s recent writing credits include the illustrated “Godkiller” film trilogy, as well as the speculative fiction comic book series “Calexit” with Amancay Nahuelpan.

Developer Tuque Games’ Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance is one of the most anticipated games of 2021 for many of those who grew up with the original Baldur’s Gate Action-rpg spinoff series and fondly remember those games as some of the best co-op console dungeon crawlers ever made.
A lot has changed since Dark Alliance first stole our hearts in 2001, but given that the original games got so much mileage out of intelligently reimagining Diablo-style gameplay for consoles while brilliantly utilizing the incredible universe they were based on, many hope this new Dark Alliance would be able to revive that series’ best qualities while incorporating elements of modern game design.
Well, the first Dark Alliance reviews seem to agree that the game suffers from quite a few technical and design problems, but it feels like there’s a bit of a divide forming in regards to how much they will impact...

The CW’s live-action adaptation of “The Powerpuff Girls” was one of the most anticipated pilots this year, with Diablo Cody co-writing and Greg Berlanti on board as executive producer. But the network announced Monday that the project was being sent back to the drawing board for retooling.
“The reason we do pilots is sometimes things miss,” The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz explained on a call with reporters on Tuesday. “This was just a miss. We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo and Heather [Regnier], who are writing, and we believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner Studios. In this case, the pilot didn’t work.”
He went on to explain that the version of the pilot that was shot earlier this year “felt a little too campy.”

While some gamers have spent the last few years speculating that Blizzard’s string of public problems meant that the company was in serious trouble, a recent report from IGN seemingly confirms that the company is at least struggling to maintain its culture and standards just as new financial issues make the upcoming releases of Diablo 4, Overwatch 2, Diablo Immortal, and Diablo 2: Resurrected more important than ever.
If you haven’t read the report, please be sure to find the time to do so. It’s a fascinating look at the state of Blizzard and how the company seems to be at a crossroads at the moment in regards to where they’ve been and where they’re going.

The reveal of Diablo 2 Resurrected didn’t exactly catch fans by surprise (the project has been rumored to be in development for a while and was leaked ahead of the announcement), but there’s something undeniably exciting about seeing Blizzard finally revisit what many consider to be the finest Arpg ever made.
Even better, much as it was for World of Warcraft Classic, Blizzard and newly acquired developer Vicarious Visions, the team responsible for the brilliant Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remake, is committed to preserving the original Diablo 2 experience as much as possible.
“This isn’t a remake,” said Rod Fergusson, executive producer of the Diablo franchise, in an interview with Polygon. “We’re not reverse-engineering it; we’re not rebuilding it and trying to make it look and sound like [Diablo 2]. This is [Diablo 2]…It’s right there, underneath the surface.”
What does that mean? Well, some things will certainly be different about Diablo 2 Resurrected.
