[Guest authors Christopher Lombardo and Jeff Kirschner of Really Awful Movies take a look back at some of the most memorable slimy moments in the horror and sci-fi genres.] In Jean-Paul Sartre’s Being and Nothingness, the philosopher weighs in on the icky properties of slime: “…it sticks to me, it draws me, it sucks at me. Its mode of being is neither the reassuring inertia of the solid nor a dynamism…”
The author described “le visqueux” (viscosity) at length, and reportedly even stared at algae to experience the repulsive feelings associated with the title and theme of his dour novel Nausea.
When it comes to phobias, a fear of slime sits pretty low on the list. Who has even heard of blennophobia compared with more prevalent fears such as agora- or arachnophobia?
Perhaps because it’s one of those fears, like being scared of fire, that is so ubiquitous that it doesn’t really need a psychological condition or fancy verbiage attached to it. After all, it’s pretty rare to experience fire in your day-to-day life (as...

Watch Four Clips from Antibirth: “Hard-drinking, pill-popping, bong-ripping Lou (Natasha Lyonne) and her best friend Sadie (Chloë Sevigny) spend their days adrift in a druggy haze. But one wild night out becomes a bad trip that never ends when Lou wakes up with symptoms of an unexplained, highly abnormal pregnancy. Who—or what—is growing inside her? As her due date approaches with alarming swiftness, the fear, paranoia, and conspiracy theories begin to pile up. A new Ghostbusters game has been revealed via a teaser trailer and will release this July.
The new game is based on the upcoming movie and will release July 12th. The gameplay will be like top down arcade games, which we are used to by now, with co-op play across characters. The visual are cartoonish style, but the game seems to have a nice classic feeling to it.
Back in January the game was announced and Activision said it would be a full on title to accompany the upcoming film, which releases July 15. For specific details, while the movie focuses on mainly a female cast, the game will let you play as male or female characters. The storyline also takes place shortly after the events in the movie, while still taking place in New York.

A more serious take on slime punk films like Toxic Avenger and Slime City, Jesse Thomas Cook's Septic Man (review) has more in common with Cronenberg’s tragic transformation tale The Fly.
Thanks mostly to the twisted mind of screenwriter Tony Burgess (Pontypool), Septic Man has a lot more going on under the surface than just a basic story about a man trapped underground inside a tank of absolute filth who begins to transform into something monstrous.
Director Cook spoke with us about the film and how it was one of the hardest, grossest experiences of his professional life thus far - but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a hell of a time doing it.

It’s Friday the 13th and a full moon tonight so we let the crazies loose and are bring back one of our favorite staff posts, The Thirteen! If you aren’t familiar with The Thirteen, it was initially conceived to be a Top 13 list of films about a certain topic. Sadly, we started it last September and it fell by the wayside. Read our past two posts:
13 Songs Used in Films That Take On a Haunting Feeling
13 Female Villains & Anti-Heroes in Film
Xtro
contribution by Jeremy Jones
A young boy sees his dad abducted by some unseen force. Three years later a meteor hits in the middle of the woods and brings something icky. Written, directed and scored by Harry Bromley Davenport, Xtro is a demented labor of love. The first twenty minutes are the most chunk blowing worthy moments. Including perhaps the grossest thing ever, walking in on your parents having sex.

In 1985, New York director Larry Cohen (It’s Alive, Full Moon High) took to the camera to bring us a cult classic called The Stuff, the story of a strange “goo” found coming from the Earth which is packaged up and sold as a delicious desert treat. The only problem is that when the customers of the product eat it they turn into flesh eating zombies.
The story is not dissimilar to another cult favourite of mine, Street Trash (J. Michael Muro, 1987), which dealt with a liquor that turned it’s drinkers to sludge, only in this case the people who, for lack of a less dirty sounding term, swallow the stuff, end up as zombies. It’s a wonderfully silly plot that works wonderfully with the rest of the film.

Regardless of how you feel about horror anthology films, it’s obvious that they aren’t going anywhere. And why would they? The format allows for nascent filmmakers to flex their chops on a short segment before feeling the pressure of a full feature; and given that the short story is the most prominent and effective form of horror (just look at the masters: Poe, Lovecraft, Matheson), it also provides the opportunity to experience these tales visually without stretching them thin to reach standard film length. It’s like reading a literary magazine from cover to cover: different styles, different effects, different scares. I’m all for it.

We’re excited to feature none other than Lori Cardille, the inimitable Sarah from George A. Romero’s 1985 horror masterpiece Day Of The Dead. Cardille’s strong, single minded and yet still vulnerable lead in Romero’s beloved third “Dead” film is inarguably one of the most important female characters in horror and the woman who played her is a delight. Lori is looking forward to hanging out in the romantic and garish Niagara Falls setting and meeting some of her devoted fanbase.
Also joining the roster is David Prowse, the man known best as Darth Vader who is beloved by horror fans for his double-shot turns as the Frankenstein Monster in Hammer’s Evil Of Frankenstein and Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell as well as Vampire Circus.
Also on the still-expanding bill is author Kier-La Janisse (House Of Psychotic Women), Fango editor Chris Alexander and the cast of...

We just got some info Bloodmarsh Krackoon, a feature-length horror comedy written and directed by Jerry Landi. It's a sequel to Landi's Krackoon, a short film that was a big hit on the festival circuit a couple of years ago.
From the Press Release:
Believing that his mutant, crack addicted raccoon Red Eye warranted a bigger tale, Jerry Landi has fashioned Bloodmarsh Krackoon as a continuation of the short, structuring it as a reboot to bring new viewers up-to-speed. In addition to Red Eye, Bloodmarsh reunites Krackoon co-stars Sal Amore and Joseph Ferri, whose characters survived Red Eye’s original onslaught.
“Sal plays Deputy Mayor Peter Rabbit,” Landi explains. “At the end of Krackoon the mayor was killed, and in Bloodmarsh Peter Rabbit sees the chance to kill the monster and make Locust Point safe for its residents and, in turn, make things right in the corrupt town. He enlists...

Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast, the feature film debut of screenwriter, director, and actor Sam Qualiana, has been acquired for worldwide distribution by Independent Entertainment, part of the Alternative Cinema network. The deal includes DVD, VOD, cable, and digital downloads.
“This is a real achievement for everyone involved with Snow Shark,” says Gregory Lamberson, one of the film’s producers. “As many filmmakers have come to realize, the market for independent genre films is brutal, and obtaining distribution can seem like an impossible goal. We’re thrilled to be working with Independent Entertainment and the wonderful people at Alternative Cinema. I know they’ll give this film the tender loving care it deserves.”
Other Alternative Cinema brands include Shock-o-Rama Cinema, Seduction Cinema, and Camp Motion Pictures. The company offers Lamberson’s first three films, Slime City, Undying Love, and Naked Fear on the two-disc DVD Greg Lamberson’s Slime City Grindhouse Collection.

It's the goo that just keeps on giving.
Filmmaker Gregory Lamberson is spreading his sticky celebration of 80s cult movies even further.
Slime City Massacre, which stars Debbie Rochon and Brooke Lewis and features cameos by Roy Frumkes and Lloyd Kaufman, is heading for Buffalo's Beyond Ghosts ParaHorror Weekend on May 26 following this month's screenings in Tampa and Las Vegas.
After slithering around the horror film festival circuit, Scm - which sees bomb survivors transformed into murderous slime creatures - was released on DVD in 2011 by Media Blasters and enjoyed a limited theatrical release from Indie Film Net.
"This is what it takes to make the audience aware of a film that defies easy categorisation," says Lamberson. "Scm is horror, it's sci-fi, it's action, it's bizarro comedy."
He added: "It took the original Slime City about 18 years to develop its reputation as a cult film; it needed to fade away and be rereleased and rediscovered.

When we say Greg Lamberson wrote the book on low-budget horror filmmaking, we mean it literally, and he's got the book to prove it. Back in 2009, Cheap Scares not only offered a lot of hard-earned advice from the hard-knocks school of Diy film production, but also gave readers a funny and fascinating look at the making of his 1988 cult classic Slime City. In the years since that film sprang up on the midnight-movie circuit, Lamberson has ventured deep into horror fiction, comics and other media, and the movie finally got a cool remastered DVD release in 2006. Rumors of a Slime City sequel buzzed around the horror community for ages – eventually becoming reality last year, when Slime City Massacre began making the film-fest...

Writer/director Gregory Lamberson’s 1988 cult hit “Slime City” was one of those forgotten gems that finally reached a much larger audience courtesy of the DVD back in 2006. As a fan of all things 80′s, the flick was an immediate hit with me, and I was quick to loan the disc to friends looking for something cheesy, weird, and, completely gross. The film — a bizarro genre-bender about a dorky New York City schlub who becomes addicted to a mysterious brew he uncovers in the basement of his derelict apartment building — isn’t anything overwhelmingly special, but Lamberson’s go-for-broke attitude and its oddly effective makeup effects charmed me in much the same way that Frank Henenlotter’s “Brain Damage” and J. Michael Muro’s “Street Trash” had when I first discovered them on videocassette. In fact, I still watch all three at least once a year. At least. Enter “Slime City Massacre...
