Kate Beckinsale detailed her experiences of systemic Hollywood sexism in a lengthy Instagram video, highlighting the machinations in place to silence women who dare to speak up about on-set assault or harassment. The actress said her decision to speak up was made in light of the Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni scandal that has reignited discussions about industry-wide misogyny.
In the clip, the Serendipity star said she was assaulted at 18 while on set and subsequently dismissed by two female colleagues, forced to do a photoshoot by her public relations representative a day after she miscarried and subjected to name-calling, ridicule and unhealthy beauty standards.
Beckinsale began the video, clocking in at just under five minutes, by stressing that she does not personally know Lively or Baldoni and cannot speak to what allegedly happened on set, but that the situation has “highlighted … this machine that goes into effect when a woman complains about something legitimately offensive,...

Casey Novak (Diane Neal) was a long-time cast member of Law & Order: Svu with some memorable and intense storylines, and her character was written off the show in a suitably dramatic fashion. Law & Order: Svu has the notable claim to fame of being the longest-running show in Dick Wolf's extensive TV universe. For 25 seasons, the ensemble cast of Svu has investigated hundreds of horrific sex crimes in the New York City precinct and even after it seems like they've seen the worst, another criminal comes along to shock them.
But it isn't just the detectives and police officers who have the goal of apprehending the city's worst. There are dozens of people who want to protect the innocent just as much as the NYPD does. The District Attorney's office and the ADAs on Law & Order: Svu have a particularly critical role in the series, and each...

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “Serendipity” is an unplanned, fortunate discovery, which refers to a Persian fairy tale, The Three Princes of Serendip. The princes were “always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of.” A few years ago, in one of our weekly talks about events that impacted us profusely, one of my colleagues talked about chance encounters, the things that happen to us when we least expect them, a concept called “Serendipity”, the occurrence and development of events by chance happily or beneficially.
I am someone who used to believe in destiny, soulmates, and unexpected encounters turning into something incredible like a Christmas game leading to a beautiful friendship, and a misplaced seating arrangement leading to meeting an incredible person. Come what may, the events and the moments immediately after still stay special. When you want something, if that’s what’s meant to be,...

Plot: Follows an American couple taking their daughter Claire to her grandfather Lawrence’s grand hotel in Italy to tell her they’re breaking up. Claire insists on celebrating Christmas in August to bring the family together, leading to unexpected complications. Claire’s other grandparents arrive to join the festivities, bringing secrets and adding further intricacy.
Review: It is that time of year again as new Christmas movies are hitting screens big and small. Typically, unless it is a big studio production, we don’t cover a lot of holiday movies on this site as they can often feel like nothing more than a Hallmark or Lifetime original project. The new film A Sudden Case of Christmas is somewhere in the middle. Boasting the great Danny DeVito, A Sudden Case of Christmas also features Andie MacDowell and Wilmer Valderrama, as well as Lucy DeVito, the daughter of Danny and Rhea Perlman.

Christina Milian is a charming lead in the streamer’s first festive offering of the year which is watchable enough given the low bar
Sneaking in just before the fleet of red Coca-Cola trucks comes barreling into town, it’s the arrival of Netflix’s made-for-pittance festive lineup, a holiday tradition that’s similarly bad for your teeth. In 2023, it was kicked off by the deceptively titled Best. Christmas. Ever!, a rotten nadir not just for the genre but for film as a whole last year, and so the perfectly competent Meet Me Next Christmas lands with a respectable shrug. Things have been, and undoubtedly will get, worse in the streamer’s most overstuffed subgenre, so inoffensively watchable will do.
Its low-level success is partly down to Chappelle’s Show director Rusty Cundieff and largely down to lead Christina Milian, the one-time R&b star who has become a staple of the cheapo romcom,...

Kate Beckinsale's 2024 spy movie is a streaming success despite its 30% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. The English actress made her feature film debut in 1993 with a brief role in Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing and, during the remainder of the 1990s, continued to star in British costume dramas such as Prince of Jutland, Cold Comfort Farm, Emma, and The Golden Bowl. During the early 2000s, Beckinsale starred in films from a variety of genres, including Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor, the romantic comedy Serendipity, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, and Click.
However, since taking on the role of Selene in the Underworld franchise from 2003 to 2016, Kate Beckinsale has become best known for action movies, also including Van Helsing, Whiteout, Contraband, Total Recall, and Jolt. She's also received some critical acclaim for her performances in smaller dramas such as Snow Angels, Nothing but the Truth, Everybody's Fine, Love & Friendship,...

Ohku Akiko’s Tokyo competition title “She Taught Me Serendipity” seems to fit right in with the director’s signature romantic drama genre style. That is a flavor Ohku has made her own through a succession of films that blend comedy and pathos, relatable protagonists and universal themes that have appealed to audiences worldwide.
Based on a novel by comic Fukutoku Shusuke, her latest, Ohku says in an interview at the Tokyo International Film Festival’s main Hibiya Midtown venue, “is more autobiographical than usual – I feel I’m telling my story.” But instead of the twenty-something heroines who have centered many of her previous films, including her 2017 Tokyo audience award winner “Tremble All You Want,” her protagonist in “Serendipity” is a nerdy male college student, called Konishi, played by Hagiwara Riku. “I’d had a male hero in a short film, but never in a feature before this one,...

Opening as a breezy romantic drama-comedy about a lonely college boy who seems to have miraculously found the girl of his dreams, “She Taught Me Serendipity” steers into deeply affecting emotional territory when cruel fate intervenes. Following her tales of young women seeking fulfillment and direction in life, Akiko Ohku’s first male-focused film is another winning mix of gentle humor and touching human drama that will speak to viewers everywhere. Following its world premiere at Tokyo, “Serendipity” should win plenty of admirers at festivals ahead of its planned local release in April 2025.
Based on the 2020 novel by popular male comedian Shusuke Fukutoku, Ohku’s latest movie initially presents as a campus rom-com. An awkward second-year student whose perpetually open umbrella serves as a security blanket and safety shield from the friendship groups he’s not part of, mop-topped Konishi (Riku Hagiwara) would be completely alone without his one-and-only buddy,...

Apart from walking through several action set pieces and a thrilling drama, Canary Black also features memorable character beats driven by the compelling performances of its cast members. Directed by Pierre Morel, Canary Black is another addition to Amazon Prime Video's roster of action movies. Although its title might suggest it has something to do with DC Comics' Black Canary, the film follows an original story that focuses on a CIA agent on the run.
Canary Black's filming primarily took place in Zagreb, Croatia, and even the scenes that portray Tokyo in the movie's storyline were shot in the Croatian city of Rovinj. When it comes to the movie's cast, it features both familiar and new faces as its leads. Since many viewers may be curious about who plays whom in Canary Black's story after watching it on Prime Video, it is worth breaking down the key characters and the talented actors behind them.

With his work spanning decades of TV and film, and a warm presence that’s equally radiant across screens big and small, John Corbett has made an illustrious career from being “that guy” in “that rom-com.”
The 62-year-old actor is perhaps best known for his role as Aidan Shaw: Carrie’s second choice on the ’90s smash hit “Sex and the City” and the second-most controversial character in its contemporary Max spinoff, “And Just Like That…”
Corbett is equally celebrated for his breakout film performance as the leading man in indie darling “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” Nia Vardalos’ treasured love story from 2002 tells the tale of a sheltered woman and her enormous, meddlesome family introducing Corbett’s dashing fiance character, the magnanimous school teacher Ian Miller, to countless kooky relatives, the Greek Orthodox Church, and the healing power of Windex.

Though movies like Holidate are quite common, their continued popularity has proven that the holiday-themed romantic comedy is a go-to favorite. Released on Netflix in 2020, the film concerns two people who are fed up with being single every holiday season and pretend to be each other's plus one. Naturally, the arrangement blossoms into a real romance, and audiences were drawn in by the film's lovable holiday vibes and low-stakes plot. Though not terribly original, Holidate, and movies like it, capture the essence of winter and capture hearts with their beautiful tales of love and romance.
Holiday romantic comedies have been around since the early days of cinema, and some of the most beloved Christmas movies of all time feature strong undercurrents of romance and romantic comedy. The sub-genre was kicked into high gear by blockbuster movies like Love Actually in the early 2000s, and the holiday romantic comedy has become...

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

Hollywood star John Cusack has spoken out about the tragic Titanic submarine loss, stating that it “doesn’t seem tragic” to him. Following a five-day search, it was announced on Thursday that all five men on board were killed in just seconds after the submersible suffered a “catastrophic implosion” 1,600ft from the bow of the Titanic, according to the US Coast Guard, reports Mirror.co.uk.
The search for the submarine prompted widespread conversations and debate on social media, with 56-year-old John making his view on the matter known.
In a post shared to his Twitter, the Serendipity actor tweeted: “I like the adventure spirit – but if someone dies climbing Mount Everest – it doesn’t seem tragic to me – sad yes – but tragic to me is when innocent people die who had no choice.”

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is the second movie sequel to Joel Zwick’s classic rom-com, and several of the original cast members return to reprise their roles for a fourth time in the beloved franchise. All three movies in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding franchise, as well as the sequel series My Big Fat Greek Life, are filled with talented actors and actresses who use their comedic talents and palpable chemistry to transform this fairly simple narrative of love and family into something that’s become synonymous with comfort, warmth, and easy viewing.
Like the other two movies and the TV show, the story of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 focuses on the Portokalos family. This installment sees them all travel back to Greece for a family reunion that’s filled with twists and turns to keep things interesting. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is...

Eugene Levy has been known to play well-meaning, offbeat, and often flustered supporting characters throughout his career. Whether he's a featured player or part of the ensemble, the veteran Canadian actor has stolen scenes left and right with his impeccable timing, earnest delivery, and trademark eyebrows. But following his stint on the fan-favorite series "Schitt's Creek," it seems like the theme of this era for him is stepping out of his comfort zone, which is also a huge aspect of his new show, "The Reluctant Traveller."
As part of the Television Critics Association Winter press tour, Levy appeared on a panel attended by /Film's Vanessa Armstrong to promote the upcoming Apple TV+ travel show. The eight-episode series will take the award-winning actor around the world to experience once-in-a-lifetime adventures with new friends, gorgeous scenery, and mouth-watering food, despite the fact that he normally wouldn't do any of these things if left to his own devices.

It is Asian Heritage Month in Canada, and few characters are more iconic than Janet Kim from “Kim’s Convenience” (2016). In this widely-watched TV show, Andrea Bang spins Janet as a headstrong, single 20-some year old who brings her Korean Canadian family together. After the show’s sudden shut-down last year, Bang re-emerges in feature form with director Renuka Jeyapalan (also from “Kim’s Convenience”). “Stay the Night” marks the duo’s re-entry into the film world, and not without applause. The film premiered in SXSW and more recently screened at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.
Here, Bang plays Grace, a stubbornly introverted corporate employee. Her roommate Joni (Humberly Gonzalez), however, is anything but. So when Joni kicks out Grace for (yet another) spontaneous hook-up, Grace finds herself looking for a retreat. She resorts to what any desperate urban, young woman would do in her shoes: find a one-night stand.

The spirit of “Ghost” literally haunts “The In Between,” a romance about two high school students whose love affair is tragically cut short, including a cameo by the poster for the 1990 blockbuster which starred Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. This time, the star-crossed lovers are teenagers — Tessa (Joey King) and Skylar (Kyle Allen) — who are involved in a car accident in the movie’s first scene. Skyler is killed and Tessa is hospitalized with a critical injury to her heart, an example of the film’s less-than-subtle use of metaphors.
Using a split timeline, “The In Between” alternates between the past, recounting how Tessa and Skylar fell in love, and the present, in which the grieving Tessa starts to believe her late boyfriend is trying to communicate with her from beyond the grave.
The teens meet at a revival screening of Jean-Jacques Beneix’s 1986 tale of amour fou, “Betty Blue,...

Talk about a sub-sub-genre that won’t die. Less than two years after the soulless vapidity of Scott Speer’s “Endless”, death-obsessed Gen Z-ers are again gifted with, well, a slightly less soulless and vapid “Ghost” ripoff in the form of Arie Posin’s “The In Between.” Bolstered by the charms of Joey King — fresh off her Netflix trilogy “The Kissing Booth,” sealing her as one of our most formidable streaming romance stars —
The primary issue: “The In Between” seems stuck in between (sorry) two very different stories. There’s the sweet, chemistry-fizzing romance between budding orphan photographer Tessa (King) and trilingual championship rower Skylar who meet cute at a screening of “Betty Blue” at their local arthouse (kids these days!) and then try to make a go of it, and what happens after a summer together — cut short when a car accident kills Skylar. Posin flips back and forth...
