Universal Pictures was originally going to release a trilogy of Tales from the Crypt (1989) movies, but plans were scrapped after Bordello of Blood (1996) failed at the box-office. This movie was not planned as a Tales from the Crypt (1989) movie. It is a loose remake of I Walked with a Zombie (1943).
Despite popular belief, this was never intended as a Tales from the Crypt (1989) movie. The Crypt Keeper segments were added later when it was released to home video, and are clearly of lower picture quality than the movie.
For the scenes with the Crypt Keeper, a cheap, rigid, hard-plastic rod puppet was used. Unlike the animatronic puppet used in the previous Tales from the Crypt (1989) series and movies.
Dr. Alice Dodgson's (Jennifer Grey's) name is a nod to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Her first name is Alice, and her last name is Dodgson, the surname of author Charles Dodgson (a.k.a. Lewis Carroll).
