Featured review
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is a movie based on the life of the great Indian jurist, economist, and social reformer Dr. BR Ambedkar. He was Independent India's first Minister of Law and Justice and the Chairman of the Drafting Committee. He devoted the entirety of his life to the upliftment of the oppressed classes in India. Being born in an "untouchable" caste, he himself faced immense discrimination and persecution from the people of high castes, in all aspects of his life - right from his childhood to his years of education and even while he was working with the Baroda State Government. Dr. BR Ambedkar's vision and struggle for a progressive India, free of caste-based marginalization, was depicted beautifully in the film. The director and all the members of the cast have done a stupendous job. Mammootty, who played the character of Dr. BR Ambedkar, portrayed the character marvelously with excellent dialogue delivery and top-notch acting. He lived the role. The supporting cast, including Sonali Kulkarni as Ramabai Ambedkar, first wife of Ambedkar, Mohan Gokhale as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, have also given stellar performances, and brought more depth to the story and Dr. Babasaheb's character. The screenplay was very riveting, and dialogues were impeccably sophisticated. Scenes from the initial parts of the movie were extremely heart-wrenching. The inhumane treatment imposed on Dr. Babasaheb was deplorable and gruesome. The movie progressed to be more and more exhilarating - with Dr. Babasaheb's awe-inspiring campaigns and speeches, particularly the one at the round table conference in London. The scenes with Gandhi Ji were also very insightful. On the whole, the movie was very enlightening and inspiring, and is a must watch for every Indian!
