Director Chinoye Chukwu has taken to Instagram to share her thoughts on the Oscar snub of her film “Till”.
“Till” depicts the historically significant story of 14-year-old Black American Emmet Till’s brutal murder in 1955 and his mother Mamie Till Mobley’s fight for justice.
Despite receiving SAG and BAFTA nominations for lead actress Danielle Deadwyler, the film did not receive any nominations in any category at the 95th Academy Awards.

Jessie Kahnweiler, a 32-year-old Los Angeles-based filmmaker, has never shied away from taking on sensitive and controversial topics, and her latest project is no exception: freezing her eggs.
In a recent essay, she openly discusses everything from the pressure she felt of having to “find the one” and the experiences that led to her decision to go through with the procedure.
“The decision to freeze or not to freeze is going to happen gradually,” she wrote. “Don’t stress. Live your life but pay attention.”

The man responsible for some of YouTube’s best educational content is planning to take a deep dive into the history of our planet. Hank Green will co-host Eons, an upcoming series about natural history born out of a partnership between Green’s production company Complexly and PBS Digital Studios.
In Eons, Green, paleontologist Kallie Moore, and science writer Blake de Pastino will track the development of life from its origins four billion years ago to the Ice Age. Through a series of vignettes, the three co-hosts will discuss a diverse array of organisms, ranging from dinosaurs to saber-toothed tigers to humans. One goal of the show, as Green noted in a press release, is to get viewers excited about paleontology.

Through Crash Course, curious individuals can learn about everything from physics to video game history to philosophy. Now, thanks to the channel’s latest set of courses, those viewers can untangle the magic of cinema. Crash Course has unveiled three film series: A history lesson hosted by Craig Benzine, a production course hosted by Michael Aranda, and an introduction to criticism led by Lily Gladstone.
All three of the new courses will be produced by PBS Digital Studios, which teamed up with Crash Course co-founders Hank and John Green back in 2014. Benzine, who is becoming quite the regular on Crash Course, will examine how the film industry was shaped by the politics of nations like Germany and Russia; Aranda, who regularly collaborates with the Green brothers, will share the knowledge he has picked up in his experience on film sets; Gladstone, an actress, will marry specific films and filmmakers to...

As the Wii U makes way for Nintendo Switch, we celebrate the system's underappreciated exclusive games...
The news wasn't necessarily a surprise, but it was a little sad nevertheless: on the 19th January 2017, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime announced that The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild would be the last first-party game for the Wii U.
See related Shane Black: a career retrospective Zack Snyder interview: Batman V Superman
From a software standpoint, this brings the struggling console's life to a quiet end, less than six years after its launch in November 2012. The Wii U, it seemed, had the odds stacked against it from the very beginning; with that awkward-sounding name and chunky-looking controller, it lacked the immediately understandable simplicity of its predecessor.

Peter Berg likes stories about regular people — the kind of people who work on oil rigs and and don’t necessarily relate to on-screen smoothies like James Bond — and for the self-professed “second half” of his directing career, including films like “Lone Survivor,” Berg has started focusing on just that. For his latest film, the fact-based “Deepwater Horizon,” Berg turns his attention to the 2010 oil rig disaster on the eponymous Louisiana drilling platform, with thrilling — and often heart-wrenching — results.
The film follows the rig on its last viable day, as the so-called “bad well” starts collapsing after a series of terrible decisions, systematic breakdowns and just plain old pressure slowly render it not only inoperable, but hugely dangerous. Berg’s frequent star Mark Wahlberg stars as electrician Mike Williams, who leads the film alongside Kurt Russell as the rig’s head honcho, Gina Rodriquez as a whipsmart member of the...

Can a computer be capable of original thought and of creating something on its own? Probably not, but scientists can collaborate with machines to get a better understanding of what humans like and what scares them.
20th Century Fox’s new film, “Morgan,” is an A.I. horror thriller about an artificially created humanoid who’s existence is threatened after she attacks one of her creators. The studio teamed up with scientists at Ibm Research to create the first-ever cognitive movie trailer, and learn what keeps audiences at the edge of their seats.
Using experimental Watson APIs and machine learning techniques, the Ibm Research system analyzed hundred of horror and thriller movie trailers. Then the artificial intelligence system watched “Morgan” and suggested the top 10 best moments for a trailer to be edited together by an Ibm filmmaker.

Women suffrage movie 'Mothers of Men': Dorothy Davenport becomes a judge and later State Governor in socially conscious thriller about U.S. women's voting rights. Women suffrage movie 'Mothers of Men': Will women's right to vote lead to the destruction of The American Family? Directed by and featuring the now all but forgotten Willis Robards, Mothers of Men – about women suffrage and political power – was a fast-paced, 64-minute buried treasure screened at the 2016 San Francisco Silent Film Festival, held June 2–5. I thoroughly enjoyed being taken back in time by this 1917 socially conscious drama that dares to ask the question: “What will happen to the nation if all women have the right to vote?” One newspaper editor insists that women suffrage would mean the destruction of The Family. Women, after all, just did not have the capacity for making objective decisions due to their emotional composition. It...

Between May 2nd and May 13th, the College Board hosts the Advanced Placement (AP) exams, which serve as the culmination of year-long AP courses that offer benefits to students once they enter college. Acing these tests tends to require a lot of cramming, and for many students, YouTube is proving to a capable study aid. Specifically, Hank and John Green’s Crash Course channel saw a 41% increase in watch time in the period surrounding AP exams.
The 41% jump is based on Crash Course’s total watch time during the month-long period between April 13, 2016 and May 13, 2016, compared to the previous 31-day period. A visual demonstration of that increase can be seen in this chart, which a representative for Hank Green shared with Tubefilter:

Hank and John Green, collectively known as the Vlogbrothers, have unveiled a new subject for their “students.” The two creators have once again teamed up with PBS Digital Studios to produce new episodes of the educational web series Crash Course. This time, the topic in question is physics, and the host is British engineer Dr. Shini Somara.
Dr. Somara, a self-proclaimed “Stem advocate” who has hosted programs for the BBC, Al Jazeera America, and several other networks, uses an energetic delivery to add some excitement to her area of expertise. In her first Crash Course episode, she spends ten minutes discussing fundamental physics concepts like velocity and acceleration.

Leaderboards have been an integral part of gaming since its inception, and it comes as no surprise — even decades later — that developers are still making games that encourage friendly, score-based contests. Take Action Henk, for example, as Dutch developer RageSquid has created an experience that — like Joe Danger and Doritos Crash Course before it — tests our skills at completing crazy obstacle courses in record times.
Outside of its basic set-up, there’s little to Action Henk. You run, jump, slide and swing your way through a multitude of devious courses, all while attempting to set the best time possible. It can be a real rush, and it’s designed to promote replayability, but the truth of the matter is that the game’s fun factor is fleeting and frustration sets in quickly. It’s unfortunate, for sure, but it’s simply how it is with this release.

When the X-Files revival was first announced, I assumed we’d see our favorite FBI agents on the hunt for the unknown. I figured we’d witness an alien or two. I hoped we’d get a banter-filled car ride or a truly disturbing monster of the week.
But never in my most far-flung, John Lee Roche-influenced dreams did I expect to watch Mulder lose his tie, don a cowboy hat and pelvic-thrust his way through “Achy Breaky Heart.”

PBS Digital Studios has added to its collection of programs with a combination of science and pop culture. The online video wing of the public television broadcaster has debuted Space Time, which frames crazy astrophysics topics in accessible, fun way.
Space Time is sort of a mélange of Pbsds' other hit shows. The first episode has PBS Idea Channel's fast-paced-yet-scholarly tone, Game/Show's analytical approach to gaming, and the same astronomical focus as the new Crash Course episodes PBS funded. Across six minutes, host Gabe Perez-Giz calculates the gravitational specifics of the planet from Super Mario Bros, providing both a physics lesson and a fresh take on an old favorite.
For those of us who are fascinated by the mind-blowing realities of astronomical study, Space Time is the perfect series. Still, even for those who don't spend their days watching Neil deGrasse Tyson videos, PBS' new web series gives...

The Vlogbrothers are adding new episodes to their educational catalog, and they're doing it thanks to an assist from the leader in public television. Hank Green and John Green have teamed up with PBS Digital Studios for two new Crash Course series: one covering Us government and a second covering astronomy. The two new series will expand Crash Course's library, which already covers eight different subject. The educational series, which uses the Green brothers' fast-paced narrations, animations, and kinetic typography to convey educational information, already includes series on subjects like world history, chemistry, and literature. These videos have proven quite popular, accumulating more than 2.3 million subscribers on YouTube. At the same time, the channel has been plagued by financial issues. During a 2013 Ama on Reddit, John Green lamented "the godawful amount of money it takes to make Crash Course," since the show's production requires a full team of academic experts,...

In this sketch from Thursday's episode, partner-in-crime Carrie Brownstein wants Armisen to join her at a hip hop show, so she – quite hilariously – schools her friend on the genre's major movements.
