First, let me warm the english speaking viewers that the subtitles do not do this film justice. The initial pun that appears in the title and through out the film is that 'lubov' = 'love' in russian. but i don't know. i didn't pay very close attn. to the subtitles, that might have been said. Lubov is shot it an ironically pro-western tone, about 1/4 to 1/3 of the film is in English, including the opening credits which are immediately `rewritten' in an editing-like cursive to Russian. When Alex wants to bed a new woman he approaches her in English, pretending to be a westerner, with the exception of Luba. At the same time, the film is set in St. Petersburg and Alex quotes classic Russian poetry as he walks around the city. Besides really kick ass themes of cultural solidarity, (russian/western tension) Lubov is shot through Alex's eyes (even though he is officially holding a camera, it can be assumed that what we see is really what he sees), and the most we see of Alex, the main character, is his naked butt cheeks. One of Lubov's great charms is that it refuses to take itself too seriously.

yeah. great movie. i saw it at sundance and i hope it gets distribution. go see it if you have the chance.
