- Max meets a young lady on a train. He tries to flirt with her, but she doesn't speak French and he doesn't speak English. He tries pantomiming, first offering her a cigarette, but she pantomimes back that smoking makes her cough. Max hits on the idea of drawing pictures to communicate. He draws a train with a question mark. She gets the idea and draws a picture of the Eiffel Tower along with a nearby building.. He tries to further his advances by drawing a bouquet of flowers which he gives to her. She pins the drawing on her blouse, testing out the pin by sticking max with it. Max draws a picture of himself with his heart in his hands. He shows the drawing to her, but she mimes "No." She takes the drawing pad, and draws a picture of a watering can pouring water on his heart Max then tears out a heart from his notebook paper and gives it to her, but she tears it into pieces (but saves the pieces in her blouse.)
They leave the train, and he tries to get her to with him, but she declines and they go their separate ways.
A few days later (the only title card in the entire film), Max is at the Eiffel Tower. He goes into the building where, it turns out, she is working. He gets her attention and, in her office, he again tries to flirt with her. This time he has come prepared, having written "I Love You" on his cuffs. And so he tells her. But just then, they are interrupted. Quickly, she hides Max behind the shower curtain. Her boss enters with a customer, and she departs. To demonstrate the product, he turns on the shower. Max is soaked.
